Hello,

I am a 19 year old man and now for 5 weeks 100 % raw vegan. Inspired by Markus Rothkranz. Before I started to be raw vegan I was "cooked" vegan for one year with a very sporty lifestyle. After I changed to raw vegan I my energy levels go down. At some days I had more power than ever, but now I am feeling more and more "dead".

I`ve lost 10 kilos. At the beginning I thought this are the detoxification symptoms. But now I feel miserable.
I went to the doctor who checked my blood levels. All levels are OK but Homocysteine is dramatically high (3 times higher than normal), ATP is very low.
I can`t climb some stairs without a burning in my muscles! I am really depressed.

About my diet:

I am eating fruits and green smoothies and some seeds like hemp, chia, and flax seeds and some tablespoons of coconut oil. I don`t eat any dehydrated things and nuts at the time. I don`t calculate the calories.
Could be the reason the amount of food intake?

Could you write some example meal plans for a raw vegan food diet based on fruits and greens and vegetables? Thank you so much!

Perhaps some people have the same problems. Please share it.

Please forgive me - I tried to use the search function, but they are so much topics so it is really difficult to find the right.

Greetings!

Hi, this is my first post here on the forums. I'm new to the raw food world and recently read the 80/10/10 book by Doug Graham, which to me is very convincing on many levels. I still, however remain skeptical about the amount of fat he recommends because I hear conflicting views around the raw food community as to what is the optimal amount of fat you should be getting. So my question is, what is your experience with fat intake, do you feel better with more/less ect.?

I wonder how many people heard about this problem of lead in ginger candy found at BOTH WF's and TJ's (along with Target, from what I gather)?

Whole Foods stocked it in the bulk bin and it was sourced from The Ginger People (whose products I have certainly bought before). TJ's was probably just packaged with their name on it. What does that tell you? It is the SAME product packaged under different names! I am convinced that Vanana organic yogurt is Stonyfield Farms (they also have a French Vanilla and Strawberry, just like SF's) because it tastes exactly the same. This happens all the time, which is why when a product gets recalled, it can affect multiple chains.

The ginger probably came from China (where ginger commonly grows) and contaminated with lead during growing. :(

The point is that to think that if you buy one product at WF's it's totally different than something from another store is just plain silly. Different labels are slapped on stuff all the time. Look at electronics.

Hi everyone, I'm not asking this to complain, just curious: usually when I wake up in the morning I have a bowl of black beans or oatmeal. But I've recently started replacing this with another green smoothie in the morning. The green smoothie has a leafy green like kale or spinach filled up to about the 25 ounce mark in my blender jar, and then to bananas, and orange, and an apple. I then add pineapple juice to about the seven or 8 ounce mark and water up to about 15 ounce mark.

I understand the green smoothie is probably healthier in terms of phytonutrients, but in terms of energy, shouldn't it be about the same oatmeal or beans in the morning?

Thank you for any insights

I went on the raw thing about 10 days ago. I have severe Crohn's disease and I made the decision to go off remicade because the stuff causes cancer and was making me susceptible to very bad bronchial infections. So to mitigate the results of going off my meds I went on raw diet, over 90% would be my guess.

At first it was helping greatly. All diarrhea stopped, hemorrhoids shrank, energy returned (was sleeping 16 hours/day and felt horrible when awake.)

Now at about 10 days some of my crohn's symptoms are returning. Diarrhea is back, though not nearly as bad. Some gut pain happening and feeling listless and fatigued again, though in a different way I think. And, getting other weird symptoms too, such as dizziness, especially in the morning. I wake up and feel like I can't walk straight, like the room is at an angle. Never had this ever in my life! I am generally very irritable, restless and can't think straight.

So the only thing I can think is that I started adding more raw sunflower seeds and a few almonds and raisins to my diet about three days ago. Can't think of any other major change.

Overall I'm eating a lot of fruit smoothies, raw carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, spinach, avocados and other veggies. I'm poor so it's not all organic.

Any helps greatly appreciated!

WARNING: This is very long. If you just want to answer any questions I might have, those are down at the bottom. The "TL;DR" of this post is that I am working to eat better and need support and answers to my questions.

---

Hey everyone! My name is Christina and I'm new here, well, kind of. I tried to go raw about 7 years ago, prior to having my first child (now I have three- whew!), but didn't really have any support and fell off the wagon pretty quickly. Periodically I toy with the idea, but it has been hard to do. I love my husband dearly, but he is a Hot Pocket and Cap'n Crunch kind of guy (though he is extremely supportive!) which makes it hard to do this because of all the temptation in the house. Prior to meeting him three years ago I ate a healthy vegan diet. I had fallen back into eating just vegetarian (I had thrown local pastured eggs back into the mix) a few weeks before that, but after meeting him I not only began a sedentary lifestyle...I started to eat crap. Cookies, chips, fast food, soda, energy drinks! Nothing has been off limits, these were things that prior to this I hadn't eaten or drank in years!

On top of my inherent desire to eat better, I have moral issues with how I have been living my life. Not only do I currently work managing an organic market, I also am a doula (where I mostly work with moms wanting a natural birth and I give them nutrition counseling), and I also run an environmental group. Every day I see the impact that eating the Standard American Diet has on this earth and it just hurts me. Then I go out and get some McDonalds...I'm the hypocrite of all hypocrites! Also, considering my major in college was nutrition (and I had a focus in vegetarian/vegan diets) you would think I would know better!!

Finally yesterday something snapped. I think it was the scale, though not literally thank god. I have kept a steady weight since giving birth to my last child (where I gained a whopping 80 pounds!). Sometimes it would go down when I decided to exercise more for a few days, but generally it stayed the same. Then I didn't weigh myself for about two weeks. I am now 5 pounds heavier than I was. I have NEVER gained weight outside of pregnancy. At least no more than just some typical water weight...and the 5 pounds put me from being in the "normal" range of weight to being considered overweight. I've never been...overweight. I also realize that as I near being 30 things are slowing down and losing weight will be harder as time passes so it is better now than never. I don't want to go raw though just to lose weight, I think it's moreso of how we were meant to eat physiologically/biologically. I don't know that I could ever be high raw...but I'm down for trying!

---

Okay now that all the back story is there...I have a few questions...okay, a lot of questions.

1) Have any of you gradually worked yourself up to a total juice cleanse? My plan was to do one juice, one raw meal, and one cooked meal for the first week. One juice and two raw meals the second week, and the third week do all juice. Is this a good plan?

2) With a juice cleanse, what kind of combinations of veggies do you like for vegetable juices? My morning juice today was mostly fruit, but with some spinach and kale. But if I choose to do a juice for lunch (which sounds good to me!) I want something more green. I'm a great smoothie-maker, but I don't begin to know how to throw veggies into the juice mix lol.

3) Realistically on a full juice cleanse, how much would I need to be drinking per day? I am drinking them from quart sized containers if that makes any difference.

4) What things should you absolutely not eat raw, due to things like poisons? I don't buy into some things like not eating apple seeds (I believe they are good for you and ward off cancer, but we won't go into all that)...but I have heard things like potatoes with green on them shouldn't be eaten...?

5) I'm deathly allergic to avocados and I'm not a huge fan of the flavor of coconut (in fact I HATE it) but I see these things mentioned A LOT by raw foodists. What can I eat instead for good healthy fats?

After this I mostly just am looking for support. I need people who are willing to be a part of this journey with me and encourage me. I don't know if I'm allowed to link to my Facebook to make friends on there...but that's where I post the most about things I'm doing so it would be nice to have some like-minded friends if anyone is interested?

Any tips and tricks I should know to make things easier?

Ok, I am not sure if should post this here, but I am interested in hearing others thoughts on how food is a spiritual journey.

Totally torn between practicing Buddhism and adhering to my faith in God. I love both. Maybe it is the idea of being labeled.

Also, has anyone heard of SGI buddhism?

I do believe what we eat is related to our faith. Nature, God, the universe.. and it appears when I really follow the idea of doing no harm and living the "right" way, I have no desire or yearning to eat anything but raw. It feels so easy. However, when I stray from this belief or not practice my prayer and meditation, I seem to give into the cooked addiction or other non-raw foods.

Does anyone else encounter this or I am the only one?

I often see the term 'orthorexia' thrown in forums. The definition of orthorexia can be found here:

[en.wikipedia.org]

"Orthorexia nervosa (also known as orthorexia) is a proposed eating disorder or mental disorder[1] characterized by an extreme or excessive preoccupation with avoiding foods perceived to be unhealthful.[2][3]The term orthorexia derives from the Greek ortho, "right" or "correct", and orexis, "appetite", literally meaning a correct diet. It was introduced in 1997 by Doctor of Medicine Steven Bratman, to be used as a parallel with other eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa."

The term orthorexia is often culturally thrown to vegans (by non vegans) as a criticism. The opposite term would be parorexia. However, wikipedia has a very tiny definition for parorexia:

[en.wiktionary.org]

"An abnormal craving for objects not normally considered food."

Now, you can throw it back if confronted with a smart ass calling you orthorexic because you eat raw or mostly raw :) This could be a simulated Wikipedia definition

"Paorexia nervosa (also known as parorexia) is a proposed eating disorder or mental disorder[1] characterized by a dull or limited preoccupation with not avoiding foods perceived to be unhealthful.[2][3]The term parorexia derives from the Greek para, "incorrect", and orexis, "appetite"), literally meaning an incorrect diet"

Is the world parorexic?

Looks interesting but I won't buy it. From reading comments, I like that it shows that the body is much more complex than what people think. I think the book is based on applying concepts of systems thinking to nutrition (like the name of the book whole). I cannot say much since I haven't read it.

Will cherimoyas ripen at home? (4 replies)

So bizarre. About two weeks ago I went into my local grocery store (which is the typical type filled with boxed and canned foods and too much overpriced produce) and I saw a little tag for cherimoya. I had bought starfruit there a few months earlier but they are not known for exotic produce in the least. I also saw some weird fruit called Buddha's hand or something. I looked it up--I think it's citrus but I am not sure.

The next day I went to my nearest produce market and saw...cherimoya!:) So this cherimoya stuff is really happening all of a sudden. I don't know what is going on--I wonder if raw fooders are clamoring for it. In any case, it was hard and I also didn't know if it's supposed to be a certain color. It's going for $6.99 a lb.

On Amazon I read a review by someone who ordered cherimoya online and threw it in the garbage because it arrived hard. Another poster said it could be ripened from a hardened state. I was wondering if that is true. It could be, since avocados are like that.

Hi,

I am writing on behalf of my friend. She was just diagnosed with photodermatitis.... she has some spots that look like burns or blisters, and whatever comes with it. She is to avoid grasses and flowers...

Can you please tell me what caused this?

And can she cure it? She is like 60-70% raw..... Will it ever go away?

I told her to avoid dairy as well as wheat. And stick to RAW as much as she can.

Is there anything else she can do? herbs? I read nettles are good?

what about the blisters? what can she put on them?

thank you! :)
