Good Example of How We Can Make a Difference

The story could have taken place in any state, but it happened to be in Michigan. It's a good indication of how concerned raw foodists can change things for the better in their own states as food and quality of life issues are legislated.

Citizen Action CAN Make a Difference
Here is a quick look at how the actions of an individual working with AAHF created a difference. No name is used to protect their future ability to affect change!

The Michigan Board of Dietetics and Nutrition, a newly created board, is tasked with establishing:

the minimum standards for licensure as a dietician or nutritionist,
the ethics, qualifications, and fitness of applicants,
complaint process, and penalties for violation of this law.

After just three meetings, the Board felt that they were ready to start writing rules that will determine who can talk about nutrition in the state of Michigan. But one concerned citizen and board member did not feel like there was enough information to start writing rules that would have such a grave impact on the citizens of Michigan.

After expressing concerns to the Chairperson, the agenda for the next meeting remained the same, “promulgate rules for dietician licensure”.

Unsatisfied with the response from the Chairperson, this concerned citizen decided to take action. The concerned citizen held a meeting with the legislator who sponsored the bill creating the Board, Chairpersons of the Health Committees, and various health public policy representatives. The meeting was to express concerns about the speed at which the Board was moving. The goal of the meeting was to ensure that the Board knew the intent of the legislature and followed the intent of the legislature.

VICTORY! The legislators and health policy representatives agreed with the concerned citizen and asked the Board to SLOW DOWN. Noting that there are many people who provide nutrition information, legislators and health policy representatives acknowledged that it would be hard to fit them neatly into one box.

Therefore, to preserve the right of the consumer to choose and the practitioner to practice in Michigan, the Board is doing research on the various practitioners, their education, and clinical requirements before they write rules.

HOW CAN I MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

This story is a great example how one person can make a difference. If you would like to help, the American Association for Health Freedom is working to put together a state chapter in Michigan that would remain up to date on all health freedom issue—including the actions of the MI Board of Dietetics and Nutrition—and take action when and if needed. If you would like to be involved in the organization of the AAHF Michigan state chapter please contact Sara Donlon, Director of State Chapters at Sara@healthfreedom.net or 614-888-7351.
