Publix Green Bags
Posted by: Wheatgrass Yogi ()
Date: February 07, 2009 01:31AM

Every time I go into a Publix now, I see Green
Bags. They're made of a re-usable plastic (Polypropylene),
and designed to cut down on plastic bag waste. It's
always the more progressive, and younger, looking people
who use them.
I thought I'd try them to see how it feels. It seems more
'vegan'. Does anyone here use them? ......WY

feel funny after using plastic all these years, but
I'm going to do it......WY

I went to Publix this morning and looked
at the Green Bags while shopping. They are only 99 cents
each, but very flimsy.....something I wouldn't use. I
want my Produce Bags to make a 'statement'.
Does anyone here use heavy Hemp, or Jute, bags?
Tell me where you got them......WY

Here's the Produce Bag I decided to go with.
I found it on eBay, very reasonable.
It's Jute, and 16"x14"x6".
I hope it doesn't look too much like a Purse?
I can get everything I want into one bag, as I
only shop for a couple of days at a time.....WY

I think it was $7.50. I found one I like better.
Don't ask me what I paid for it. At 14"x14"x6", it's just
perfect for a 5-lb. bag of Carrots, 3 lbs. of Celery, and a
couple of pints of Sweet Peppers.....WY

well i got a couple of the BIG baggs i use to put my produce in etc.

but what about ... what is the solution for when you get parsley from the store and you don't want to stick it on the conveyor belt or just have it lie without plastic in your fridge

what kind of "small" plastic bag do you use that is convenient?

when i wash the small plastic grocery bags that i use to put .. say parsley... or spinach.. its a real pain

sometimes the leaves and particles get all over the bag
and when you wash it out... its hard to do to begin with

and it gets soaked in water
and it seems like there has gotta be a more sturdier kind of bag to put individual
grocery items BEFORE it gets into the nifty recyclable plastic tote bags

any ideas?

i'm thinking that a HUGE zip loc bag would do the trick
for the individual items

are there any zip loc bags that would carry a whole thing of spinach or kale or even beets?

they are kind of big

LaV for small items likeyou say I use these cheap little mesh bags that you can find for doing your dainty's in the washing machine .. they are usually big enough for even the biggest brocolli trees or big heads of kale

they look like this

if you are handy dandy you could make a half dozen of these quite easily from a cheap store bought mosquito net or some fancy lace curtains from a second hand shop (just make sure they are not some victorian treasure you are about to snip up !!)

or maybe we can talk coco into make us all a few dozen tongue sticking out smiley my fingers and sewing machines arent a good match tongue sticking out smiley

best of all when you wanna wash em ..flip em inside out and toss em in wash smiling smiley

la_veronique,

This is something I've been obsessing about myself. I usually take three 5-gallon insulated reuseable bags, and put loose veg directly into two of them instead of into plastic bags or into a grotty shopping cart. I keep the third bag empty for filling after each item has been scanned from one of the filled bags, and after the first filled bag is emptied, I use it for the contents of the second filled bag. It requires some juggling and a bit of physics, but I manage. I clean the lining of each bag after every use to make sure the interior is dry and sanitary. I am thinking of buying jute or sissal bags, like Wheatgrass Yogi, which don't have waterproof lining, and lining them with compostable small trash bags to make them "waterproof" and sanitary. I think Biobag([www.buygreensavvy.com]) makes some the right size. I buy their compostable dog waste bags, as I consider it worth the expense to not put biodegradable poo into nonbiodegradable plastic! Hope I've helped smiling smiley

I'm still obsessing about using an Eco, or
green, Bag. I'm not sure I can do it. They 'look' so female.
Do 'Real Men' use cotton-canvas bags for Produce? I live in a Senior
Citizen community, and everyone here uses Plastic....WY

Well, since you and Jodi put it that way,
I guess I'll try it even though I think it looks 'silly'
for a man to use Eco Bags.....WY

wheatgrassyogi

actually, no one will be paying attention to what kind of bags you use
unless its eco

and if its eco
people will be impressed

and if people are impressed
they will follow suit

and if they follow suit
then there will be less plastic stuff floating around in the landfills and oceans

and if you do your part to let the earth breathe easier
then you make the XY chromosomal species look better

I agree with la_veronique's post above. For the love of [fill sacred name in here], don't use plastic bags just because everyone else at the senior community does! Be a maverick! As long as the bag doesn't have something hokey on it like, "World's Greatest Quilter," wear it loud and proud and like a man!

Sounds good!!
I just used an Eco Bag for the first time. It
didn't feel as weird as I thought it would. No one seemed
to notice. I'll try it again tomorrow.
This is the bag I decided to go with. It looks a little on
the feminine side, but I'll get use to it.......WY

i use a box when i go for groceries. they always have tons of them and they keep things from getting squashed.

my mama brought me a cotton bag for greens the other day. seemed a fancy way to keep them crisp in the fridge when i could just make my own but the picture of the lettuce on the front is nice. you just wash the greens and store them in the bag in the fridge, the dampness of the produce and the breathability of the bag keeps it all fresh and crisp.

it's a shame that more men don't get visibly eco-conscious, i think a dude with a cotton grocery bag is pretty sexy. even better if he's riding a bike too, that's a major plus for sure!

It's interesting how people shop. I can get
2-days supply of my food in one Eco Bag, but I buy online
too. Years ago I knew a woman who used a hand-truck, an
assortment of cotton bags, and a backpack. It was amazing
to see her carrying a good sized Watermelon in the backpack,
pushing the hand-truck, with a cotton bag on each shoulder....
all loaded with produce.......WY

I'm getting more comfortable using my canvas
eco-bag. This morning the cashier at Publix made a comment
about it.
I wonder how this Jute Log Bag would work? It's masculine
enough, don't you think??......WY

WY,

Hmmmm, I dunno . . . I can picture Granny's knitting in it. What sort of a comment did the cashier at Publix make about it--positive or negative?

What sort of a comment
did the cashier at Publix make about it--positive or
negative? Actually it was negative.....Before
checkout I told her I had my own bag, which she promptly
forgot and bagged my order in plastic. I told her a second
time and that's when she said "save the landfill" in a
sarcastic way. I tried to be nice, and she said she'd pay
more attention next time.....WY

WY,

I am clearly more misanthropic than you, because if my cashier doesn't hear me, I repeat myself, making direct eye contact, "Miss . . . I. Have. My. Own. Bag." I have never heard a sarcastic retort to this; it's usually, "That's good, I hate all this plastic." But if I did, it would go something like: [raised eybrows indicating incredulity]"Why do you think reducing plastic waste is dumb?"[waits serenely with slightly @#$%& head for answer]. I encounter too much rude and stupid to let it get away unpunished! And if this woman was significantly younger than you, you should've slapped her for impertinence. Kids today--if they're not huffing WD-40 out behind the gym, they're insulting their elders and betters smiling smiley
