Vegans in TV shows!
Date: January 01, 2010 11:06PM

I recently started watching this vampire TV show 'True Blood'.

In it, there's a raw vegan who's addicted to drinking vampire's blood (which acts like a drug to humans in the show), and she says how eating pure foods etc makes her 'feel' more, closer to nature etc. Personally, I can't see how drinking any kind of blood allows her to keep her vegan status, but nevermind!

Whenever vegans are in TV shows/films, they always end up being hypocrites or come to a bad ending! In 'See No Evil', the vegan ends up being eaten by dogs, in 'Wrong Turn 2', the vegan is force-fed human flesh!

Are there any vegan characters in any TV show or film who don't get a hard time!?

Well, on the satirical animated show, "The Goode Family," the title clan are vegan/vegetarian. They are the superficially stereotypical Asheville, NC do-gooder tree-hugger animal rights-concerned pacifist hippies that popular conception says all vegetarians are. But they are also smart, earnest, and kind, so over all, I think it's a slyly complimentary depiction. Or maybe that's just my veg naïvete : )

I will investigate that show, thanks :-D

I just remembered something... Apu from the Simpsons is a vegan. He's sweet, although a bit of a sucker, LOL!

This is a hard question and I have to go way back.

The character Kwai Chang Caine from the Kung Fu TV series and movies did not eat meat, was taught by Shaolin monks to nurture and have compassion for all life, and that one can learn from the animals. Caine seemed able to live on water and herbs and still kick butt.

Others were similarly moved by the show in the 70's--

The character lived as a priest, made one big mistake with the emperor of China then lived on the run managing to help a lot of people along the way.

Me too. I always cheered when Caine whipped the bad
guys. I'm surprised it only ran 3 seasons (1972-1975)....There
were many valuable lessons offered.....WY

LOL. Caine did kill two men in the Series...The Emperor's
nephew (who had just killed Master Po) and the Shaolin priest (Caine was
one also) sent by the Emperor to kill Caine. I can still hear Caine
saying after he killed the priest in a battle to the death..."No one
wins when a life is lost".....WY

I remember that scene when the Shaolin priest tracked down Caine and they
fought and Caine was congratulated on his victory, Caine finding no honor in
it. It would have been hard to reconcile with the Shaolin "life begets life".

"life begets life"

Actually thats a quote from French actress, Sarah Bernhardt.

A Shaolin quote might go more like "good cause begets good effect".

The comment at the start of this thread reminds me of another quote :
"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win." -- Mahatma Gandhi

I think that some people are still transitioning to the fight you part winking smiley

About 10 years ago, Curtis Aikens, a vegetarian, had his own show on the Food Network. Not a vegan, but close. smiling smiley

I just started watching this show- it's quite cute though the vegans sometimes come across as hypocrites (wanting to get rid of an animal just because it's stinky whilst the meat-loving granddad treats it like a baby, pushing it around in a pram!)! The vegan dog and Ubuntu are very funny!... thanks again for the heads up! smiling smiley

The parents in it remind me of a comic strip called 'The Modern Parents' that's in a UK adults comic called Viz, where the parents are these new-age vegan hippy types who spend vast amounts of money on organic slop and quack new-age workshops, which embarrasses their son.

suspendedindefinitely,

You are welcome for the heads-up about "The Goode Family." Thanks for the Wiki link to "The Modern Parents;" very amusing reading : )
