Is a 5 gallon glass jug too heavy to carry?

Was thinking of buying a 5 gallon glass jug from Craigslist but I need to know if it will be too heavy to carry when filled up with water. I'm not that strong of a guy lol.

Fruitylou .. a US gallon of water weighs about 8.5 lbs (8.33 to be exact) .. so 5 gallons would be just over 40 lbs .. not sure how much your bottle weighs but it could be heavy to carry full ..

what i do is when i go collect spring water i fill up smaller jugs and containers and lug them up to the car an fill up the 5 gallons in the back of my hatchback smiling smiley

i used to lug around 2 x 5 gallon pails a decade and a half ago when i was farming but those days are long gone and my shoulder joints are gratefull .. i probably did a lot of damage to them smiling smiley

yeah, if you can easily carry 50lbs you should be fine lou, if you have a really difficult time carrying 50lbs, then you may be in trouble... (when it comes to lugging the glass jug full of water around that is.)

Do you gather well water? Or buy filtered water from a machine? I used to get that, but I used gallon sized containers which were easier to carry, even though there were more of them.

Hmmmm... 50 lbs is nothing I can't handle, I'm a bit of klutz though and those jugs don't look easy to grip.

Where can I find a cap for a 5 gal jug? Could I use a rubber stopper that they sell at brewery outlets?

hey fruitylou, a strong wooden or plastic crate could really help you with carrying your 5 gallon glass bottle, if you can find one, im sure that would work great! I think plastic would work best though, no joints that can come undone...

I am still waiting for a food safe stainless steel 3 or 4 gallon beverage container, like the type 7 plastic ones I get filtered water in from the RO water store. Waiting . . . waiting . . .

There's this company here. Bet they would look for something if they don't have exactly what you're after.
