Vote this up on reddit before it disappears, this is awesome.

So collect rain water in a barrel, run a hose through the compost pile, gravity feed it to the taps and hey, free hot water! That's amazing stuff.

What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

That's a great idea!

Another really simple ideas for sunny areas is to coil a black hosepipe on the roof, it will collect the heat during the day and becoming scalding hot, you can gravity feed it to an outdoor shower or into the bath, or to taps. In sunny warm weather it only takes about an hour or so to get hot, and is even warm in the winter sun!

Here's a vid of it as an example.

though the waterpipe spirals I've seen are tighter and larger. The longer the length of hose, the more hot water, and black is the best colour as it collects heat most effectively.

That was a Great video. They were a good team, and made it
look easy. However, it was too complicated for an average home project.
I didn't like the fact they used a cheap hose (obtained at a yard sale,
I think he said). My 'Sears Best' is still going strong after 15 years,
and it's exposed to the Sun everyday. How long can their cheap hoses
last?
They had a hotwater heater connected to it, so where are the savings?
I'd like to hear an answer from a technically minded person......WY

They didn't have a hot water heater attached to it, they had to attach a cold water source to cool it down when it got too hot!

I'm checking out that other video, good to have a source of free hot water readily available. Have to make sure the hose doesn't contain lead though...

Did any over you click the up arrow on reddit? Please do, it's right beside the post on the left side. This guy has a stalker who down votes all his stuff as soon as he posts it so it doesn't appear on the site. I don't know why anyone would bother but some people just like to be nasty I guess.

Another set up, traditional house hot water supplement.
This should be included in every building even built that uses hot water. If enough people were doing it imagine how much energy it would save!

I am loving a lot of these posts, I wish there was a whole sub forum on this site dedicated JUST to stuff like this, so it would be easier to find, since there have been tons of similar posts with other really cool stuff... but they get kinda lost amongst the millions of posts I make in heretongue sticking out smiley, hahahaha

This is the same video. Are you trying to confuse
me?
I'm still a few years away from
Solar Hot Water. I do have a tankless water heater (very popular
in Europe) that only heats the water as needed, rather than a
conventional water heater that keeps the water hot 24 hours a day.....WY

Oops, I didn't even see that youtube link there!

On demand hot water heaters are great but really expensive. They pay for themselves over time but are quite the initial investment.

actually, over a LONGGGG time, the majority of their useful life span, BUT the tech is fairly new, it will drop in price eventually as it becomes more commonplace... its pretty awesome, I almost think they should be included in all new houses being built, would be cool, and not really raise the price of buying a new house by an amount that would really matter compared to the rest...lol

This is too complicated a method for me, but I am saving up for an on demand heater. Oh, how I long for you, green-renovated home of my wildest fantasies!
