Honestly, I think if they give off these signals it's totally unconscious. The lot of them in Iowa seemed totally oblivious to the impression they were making in photo ops.

Well, you know the repressive conformity that is required by certain philosophies and also the strict gender roles. There is a mindset that relegates women to sexual or reproductive types, and these are kept separate from one another. IMO, it's identical to the tribalism one sees in cultures all over the world, where objectification of one sex maintains the social privelege of the other--consider how much more flack Bachmann got for her photos(even allowing for controversy about her husband)versus what the fellas received. Consider how much pushback she is getting from pundits for insupportible statements, compared to the men that speak as incoherently. Double standards all around, all founded on quite primitive definitions of authority and gender. The "Other" must be degraded and subjugated for the "I" to prosper. It pervades other sectors of socialization, in addition.

Well for anyone in the public eye, just about everything can be criticized. I just imagine that for them this photo op was an attempt to look traditional american, somehow appeal to the 'average' american. Like apple pie, baseball etc...
