Jgunn - you should say ' never even knew we had Scottish or Scots blood in us' - not Scotch because that is alluding to the drink - Whiskey - of course you might have some of that in you too for all I know smiling smiley smiling smiley

Jodi, that's so awesome! And that tartan is cool.

I try to remember "Scots, not Scotch" the way I keep hanged and hung sorted: "If a gallows is involved, it's hanged. In all other, um, cases, it's hung"

So, if there's booze involved, it's Scotch. In all other cases, it's Scots grinning smiley

Mislu,

It is considered offensive to refer to the Scottish people and or thie characteristics, as Scotch. The Scottish people are Scottish or Scots[not necessarily plural].

Scotch mist makes a lovely drink, but so does Irish moss . . .

I think he means the tartan Tam. If so, yes, they belong to different families. No idea what is in my family past but it's back there somewhere!

A few years ago, I was watching PBS and they had a special on cave drawings and mummies discovered in what is now the Uighur semi-autonomous region of China. There was clear evidence of tartan patterns in their clothing, and some speculation as to what direction this textile motif traveled; east to west, or west to east. Still tantalizes:
