People who raise bees often use sugar for their food. Maybe the pests are attracted to these weak bees.

There are over 4000 species of bees native to North America. The domestic honey bee is native to Europe. But since all natural habitat is plowed under and poisoned there are no native bees left to pollinate the crops, hence the need for the European honey bee.
