Internet Addiction is a Mental Illness
Posted by: KidRaw ()

Well, it's going to be classified as one when the time is right -

Digital Age overload: ‘Internet Addiction’ to be classified as Mental Illness

[rt.com]

This could work in our favor - it means a person can get out of being drafted because they have a mental disorder. But they won't be able to own a gun, either. And a person can collect Social Security - SSI - because of having a disability. Another scam to get government (taxpayer) money.

I'm sure Big Pharma will come up with addictive drugs and a vaccine to treat it, too.

I'm sick of the Psychology/Psychiatry phony-balogna.

When I went to the guidance counselor at college to sign up to take certain courses, he said "How do you FEEL about that"?

I went to a psychiatrist once - she said I had agoraphobia and gave me valium. Luckily I only took them a couple times. Ten years later, I found out my problem - pressure in the head and 'brain fog' - was due to celiac disease/gluten intolerance.

Get rid of all drugs, alcohol, chemicals, processed and cooked food in the world and in a few generations, we won't need any psychiatrists/psychologists.

Hey KidRaw,

Have you ever heard of the Thud Experiment?

Here is part of my file on Psychiatry…

Psychiatry is fake science. The Thud Experiment proof.
3:36 Minute Video

Transcript of an excerpt from BBC2 "The Trap", broadcast 11th March 2007
[en.wikipedia.org]...

(Laing speaking to someone - Note Laing's Scottish accent!)
[en.wikipedia.org]

Commentator - "Laing was now a celebrity in America and was one of the leaders of what was called the 'Anti-psychiatry movement'.

Psychiatry, Laing said, was a fake science used as a system of political control to shore up a violent collapsing society. Its categories of madness and sanity had no reality. Madness was simply a convenient label used to lock away those who wanted to break free."

"Hundreds of young psychiatrists came to Laing's talks and one of them was inspired and decided to find a way of testing whether what Laing said was true or not. Could psychiatrists in America distinguish between madness and sanity?"
[en.wikipedia.org]...

"He was called David Rosenhan and he devised a dramatic experiment. He assembled 8 people, including himself, none of whom had ever had any psychiatric problems.

Each person was sent across the country to a specific mental hospital. At an agreed time, they all presented themselves at their hospital and told the psychiatrist on duty they were hearing a voice in their head that said the word "Thud". That was the only lie they should tell otherwise they were to behave and respond completely normally."

Question - "and then what happened?"

David Rosenhan - "They were all diagnosed as insane and admitted to the hospital."

Question - "All of them?"

David Rosenhan - "All of them."

Question - "And were any of them insane?"

David Rosenhan - "No. There was nobody who could have judged these people as insane. ... but I told friends, I told my family, I get out when I get out; that's all. Be there for a couple of days and then I get out. Nobody knew I would be there for 2 months!"

Commentator - "Once admitted, all 8 fake patients acted completely normally yet the hospitals refused to release them and diagnosed 7 as suffering from schizophrenia and one from bipolar disorder. They were all given powerful psychotropic drugs.

They found there was nothing they could do to convince the doctors they were sane and it quickly became clear that the only way out would be to agree that they were insane and then pretend to be getting better.

David Rosenhan - "The only way out was to point out that they're correct. They said I was insane, I am insane, but I am getting better. That was an affirmation of their view of me."

Commentator - "When Rosenhan finally got out and reported the experiment, there was an uproar. He was accused of trickery and deceit and one major hospital challenged him to send some more fakes to him, guaranteeing that they would spot them this time.

Rosenhan agreed and after a month, the hospital proudly announced that they had discovered 41 fakes. Rosenhan then revealed that he had sent no-one to the hospital.

The effect of The Thud Experiment was a disaster for American psychiatry. It destroyed the idea that they were a privileged elite with specialist knowledge.

But those in charge realised that psychiatry could not just give up. Another way had to be found of understanding and managing people's inner feelings in modern society."

I feel that I struggle with internet addiction. I've always loved information. The opportunity for a constant stream of novel info as provided by the internet is hard for me to resist. I didn't read the RT article, sorry if I repeat something it said, but some studies have proven that simply checking to see if someone has responded to us in a forum will release dopamine. Another study has found that receiving e-mail gives a squirt of oxytocin. Of course, the problem with the constant supply of this stuff is that a de-sensitizing effect may eventually emerge that's similar to what happens to meth or coke addicts.

Wow, that's a coincidence! I've been hearing the word "Thug" in my head for four years now!

Hey KidRaw,

That’s too funny, but at the same time sad. Unfortunately, I understand all too well just exactly what you mean and I cannot help but wonder how many other people have suffered from this.

Me, too, I love researching stuff online. And if you're the least bit obsessive/compulsive, or if you have a hobby you like, an interest, you can waste hours. I find that if I don't get enough sleep, so I'm not feeling so great in the morning, I get obsessed with looking up decor photos because I love decorating. Thank God I'm not a guy, or I'd be addicted to porn. When you have a lot of interests - politics, health/nutrition, etc., there's not enough hours in the day to look up all the information. And if you're on Facebook or Twitter, it's worse.

John, a lot of those links didn't work - all the Peter Dow. And after reading about Laing, I'm not a fan of his. It sounds like he was an emotional basketcase himself.

I think there are three types of people - Mental, Physical and Emotional. The Emotional types are those who have psychiatric problems and those who commit suicide.

I think some people are permanently physically screwed up in their head because their mother drank while pregnant and so they were born that way (the psychopaths) and others are screwed up by their parents giving them drugs for ADHD/bi-polar/depression while they were growing up. That's a crime. I wonder if that can be reversed. Then others who drank alcohol and smoked grass (I think they call it weed now) and did other recreational drugs when they were young have also messed their brains up. I wonder if that can be fixed by the raw food diet or if it's permanent because I did that in my young stupid years.

I can't see how it helps emotional people to keep talking about how they feel and focusing on their emotions. They need more balance - do more mental and physical stuff and stop eating gluten, dairy and chemicals, etc.

I'm thankfully impervious to the allure of porn, but it's use is rampant amongst most men and boys. I've linked an interesting TED talk about the porn epidemic and what it does to men's brains and sex-drives. It's much along the lines of what I mentioned regarding novel pleasure, dopamine, etc.

Slate article on the internet addiction article -

There was a Newsweek article about it entitled ICrazy -

And these guys are taking the other side - that there's no problem with too much internet - I agree - I've been hooked on the internet for thirteen years now and I've never felt better or been happier.

Maybe the Psychiatry/Psychology Industry will turn this into a disorder and make a drug to cure it ---

Some May Suffer From Post-Election Depression

[minnesota.cbslocal.com]

"Once the election results are in, you might find yourself very happy or very disappointed, depending on the outcome.

It may be difficult to mask how you are feeling when you are around your co-workers or people with whom you’d rather not talk politics.

Dr. Linda Reiss, a psychologist in Minneapolis, said there will likely be some people who will experience a bit of post-election depression. In some cases, it extends beyond disappointment over the election results.

Anger over a candidate or an issue winning or losing can subconsciously trigger other emotions that have been buried, some deep disappointment that occurred when we were much younger or even when we were children. The day after the election can remind us of how we felt at other times in our lives when we felt those close to us where not making rational decisions.

So come Wednesday, or whenever we know the official outcome of all the races, some people will be struggling emotionally. Experts recommend that you be aware of that and be respectful."
