I like "The Illusionist", starring Edward Norton
and Jessica Biel. It's a reminder that maybe we can unlock
some of the mysteries of the Universe....WY

We have been watching a lot of them lately. I just re-watched Alfred Hitchcock's "The Trouble With Harry." I like it. I needed a silly laugh.

I saw "Fight Club" (also with Edward Norton) for the first time last week and I can't quit thinking about it.

We re-watched Hotel Rwanda a couple weeks ago. I have been thinking about it since then.

It was interesting about "The Illusionist" when
Edward Norton and Jessica Biel gave separate interviews...
they both said that wearing the Costumes of their characters
made them 'feel' more like the character they were playing. A Lesson
for us? Do we look like the character we're playing? I'm getting
close. You?.....

I just watched "The Band's Visit," which was an Israeli/Egyptian coproduction from last year or '07. It's about a policemens orchestra from Alexandria that comes for a concert to Israel and gets misdirected to and stranded in the wrong town. They are taken in by some of the locals and somehow communicate with them verbally and emotionally. It was funny and poignant and deeply sad all at the same time. I strongly recommend it.

One of my 'top 10'..."The Shawshank Redemption" is more
of a guys movie, but there are Lessons for all...Hope for one.
Plus, there are two great actors in Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.
A great quote from the movie..."Get busy living, or get busy dying"....WY

Lightform,

"I realy go for human dramas that show up the beauty in culture, and other nuances of human life."

Me too! This film reminded me what GOOD film making is about. The narrative is ethnic slice-of-life, but at the same time, universal. The acting was very naturalistic and the cinematography was evocative. I used to see movies like this all the time and for some reason, I stopped. Now I resolve to start making an effort again and go out in support of films like this one.

Hmm... then I would recommend you check out these...

7 Pounds _ true story
Bella
Charlie Wilson's War _ true story ( I think )
Children of Huang Shi _ true story
Diggers
*** Freedom Writers _ true story
Fugitive Pieces
Grand Theft Parsons _ true story
Half Nelson
Life as a House
On the Edge
Paris
Resurrecting the Champ _ true story
Slumdog Milionaire
Stop-Loss _ based on reality
Swing
*** The Great Debaters _ true story

It was a joke. I was implying that you don't
have time for anything else. I hope you took (take) it
the right way. Sometimes my Humor falls flat...WY

I didn't think women could identify with the
main character (Andy). He was my kind of guy...WY

My favorite movie for the past while was "Waitress" with Keri Russell. It's just so unique and makes you feel so good at the end. I wish Adrienne Shelley had not met such a tragic death, because she would have made so many wonderful movies. This one is a real treasure.

Thanks for the list, Lightform! I've seen a few of these, and I'll try to knock down the rest over the next year.

I saw Seven Pounds

with Will Smith

no amount of liquid romance and heartwarming acts of mechanical adroitness in fixing an antique printing machine can disguise an outright suicide

hey .... its his choice

but the director definetely made it out to be an act of heroism

i think it was probably a bit of both

cowardice and heroism

all at once

within the same act

he was too cowardly to face himself every day and live with the pain in his heart

and he decided to do some egregiously generous acts of "heroics" before he checked out

hey... i guess... that is not a bad idea actually

i mean... if someone is really hell bent on leaving the planet

might as well donate all your organs if you know they will benefit someone who doesn't have a

lung lobe
cornea ( pair)
heart ( cuz they have a rare blood type)
liver
kidney

but still..

it was VERY unsettling

and my heart did not feel "warm" and fuzzy afterwards

it felt

as cold as ice

because i felt shocked

okay well maybe i shouldn't have called him a coward

i meant he was too broken hearted to carry on in this world

it was probably an ingenious idea to do something beneficial for other people

since he already made up his mind to leave

so he could be with his wife

Hmm.. interesting perspective LaV. I thought it was prety darn cool, he valued the life of another enough to give his own.. he had a reason to live at the end !
BTW, I don't think it was a true story either, I made a mistake on the list.

Re: What's Your Current Favorite Movie?

i didn't know whether or not it was a true story either

but hey.. maybe some people do go around doing that kind of stuff

but i always thought that it would be due to really adverse conditions

like donating a kidney or whatever because they really need the money

or maybe it was because it was a family member or loved one and they need an extra kidney cuz the other person's kidney failed due to diabetes etc.

but this guy in the movie was quite uh..."different"

geeez.. i dont know what i would do

i really like having ALL of my organs

i don't even want to think about donating ONE kidney

if someone really needed it

people can have all the food in my fridge if they want

and all my books on my bookshelf

and even any other knick knacks

but please... ohPLEASE... not my

KIDNEYSSSS!!!

i get to keep that

and my liver

and my eyes

and for heaven sakes

i get to keep my own HEART

thank you smiling smiley

that movie was kind of scary to me

scarier than any horror movie

because he was smiling like some intrepid saint throughout the entire film

gave me the heeby jeebies

even though he was supposed to be a "good samaritan"

it made me wonder if the director lost his mind or something

i mean wasn't HIS life precious too?

i'm still disturbed by the film
and i watched it a while ago
i better think about happier things

still

the dude did GOODsmiling smiley

I haven't seen anything good in awhile but Dersu Uzala is one of my favorites.

The best recent movies I've seen (I've seen 'em recently not they are new movies) are They Live and The Man From Earth (which I get a feeling you folks would get a kick out of).

We have been watching "Breaking Bad". It is a cable TV show, but we rent it and watch it like a movie.

I really like it. I love that actor. I don't even know his name. He was the dad (Hal) on "Malcolm in the Middle" and I loved him in that too.

"Breaking Bad" is edgy. It's not for everyone.

I'm watching "Only You", with Marisa Tomei and
Robert Downey, Jr. They are so good together. I wanted to find
a movie that would make me Laugh. It's working....WY
P.S. BTW, It's a Spiritual Practice to Laugh when you don't
feel like it. Just start laughing and see where it takes you
(best to be alone for this).

Are you kidding me coco? Breaking out of prison and running away to Mexico is totally a guy thing. That film is one of my top favorites. Book was great too.

Edited to add: In the context of the original comment about it being "a guy movie" your post makes more sense! On its own, not so much.

I guess we girls have to stick with Thelma and Louise for our rebellious adventures.

I watched "Slumdog Millionaire" the other night. It was really good but I expected it to be better from all I had heard.

shawshank redemption, huh?

all i remember was how tall that dude was ( what's his name)
anyhow... a dude had to work on some wire/cabling/electrical stuff at my place
the other day

he looked JUST like that guy in shawshank redemption (the main guy)

and i wanted to tell him that
but i couldn't remember his name
and i didn't want to say " you look like susan sarandon's husband"

LOLsmiling smiley

so i just stared at him
while he fixed the electrical wiring thingamjig
and explained which wire went to what etc.
