When people argue about global warming, all I go back to is POLLUTION. I remember being a kid in the '70s before Reagan when factories on the West Side of Chicago were still humming along and the horrible black smoke coming out of the top. Same with going through areas like Gary, Indiana, where you could smell the acrid air through the car window...So the fact that China is experiencing this is nothing to sneeze at is what I am saying...But it's comically bizarre. Also, the decline of American industry started well before Reagan went into office. Re: Wanna see something truly bizarre? Virtual clear skies!

My bad...it started with Nixon. Sorry if I didn't see the other post, by the way. Re: Wanna see something truly bizarre? Virtual clear skies!

Date: January 20, 2014 06:15PM Nixon definitely accelerated industrial decline with the creation of the EPA, but it's not so simple that one President can be blamed.

Date: January 20, 2014 06:39PM I say this because my partner is 11 years older than I am and in the early '70s he talks about working in factories when he needed a job. You could go in and do that for a few months and never had to think about having a job.
Yes, I think there is a definite trend in the direction of jobs overseas. I heard a stat that at the beginning of Reagan's term in 1981, the USA was the first in production and now we are #1 in imports. It's been totally turned upside down since he took office. I remember working for a temp agency in the mid-'80s. Just like now there are many professionals doing contract work rather than full-fledged permanent employment. I do apologize for breaking the two topic taboos at once: politics and economics! Re: Wanna see something truly bizarre? Virtual clear skies!

Date: January 21, 2014 06:04PM Socialist rust-belt unionites and their sympathizers tend to think that just because private-sector unionism in America collapsed the pool of industrial jobs also collapsed. Minus research, I'd be willing to blindly wager that there are as many industrial jobs in America (not adjusted for population growth) right now as there were in the 70s. An industrial job is simply that, an industrial job. Nowhere in the definition does it claim that it also has to be an overpaid union job that you can walk in and out of as you please.
