WY car alarms tick me off. Nobody is going to call the police or even check to make sure that car is OK, all they're doing is cursing that alarm when it goes off any time of day or night. Very irritating. Very. Re: Things you find irksome.

Date: February 15, 2012 04:21PM Vinny, it's not a typo, LOL. A typo is when you hit a key by accident; these people don't know the difference between 'their' and 'there,' etc.
Coco, I know someone with a PhD who's (not WHOSE, people!) like this and so I have to remind myself that this has nothing to do with intelligence. It's like a learning disability where people cannot remember the rules of homonyms, etc. It really bothers me whenever I see it, but I do have to realize that there are plenty of areas in which I struggle. Though I was tired the other day and typed whose instead of who's and then couldn't go back and correct it. That's another thing that makes me mental, not having the option to edit posts online. Come on now, that's not necessary. You know whose (whose!) fault that is here? Piotrek. Were you here when he went through the entire forum on a freak out and deleted Every Single post of his he could find? LOL, funny in retrospect but not so amazing at the time. Edited 1 time(s). More grammar, I do not like it when people say "I seen him on the way to the store." If you are a native speaker at least speak the ONE language you know well. I seen him. Seen. Grr. Re: Things you find irksome.

Date: February 15, 2012 11:51PM Coco, I have a minor in Linguistics (not always sure whether we have to capitalize that as a proper noun or not, LOL) and "I seen: correlates with socio-economic class. I wish I could have simply studied the area of Socio-linguistics; very fascinating stuff. Re: Things you find irksome.

Date: February 16, 2012 12:33AM That's not technically improper though... is it? Wait... it is. It's OK to use an apostrophe to denote possessives but not with 'it'. Oh Maude, I can't think straight about this right now. I'll look it up later. This is one of those things like typing 'a historical' instead of 'an historical'. I read that in books etc and it bugs me but then I think that maybe that's not really a rule, I just think it is.
Dude, now I'm all confused. I'm envious you studied Linguistics though, that sounds like fun to me. Re: Things you find irksome.

Date: February 16, 2012 12:58PM Maude = G_d. Not something I use as an expletive or descriptive word .
Peeve ~ the casual use of the word G_d, saying things are "retarded", calling people of colour "coloured", I can't believe anybody still says that! Movies based on books that SUCK so that everybody who hasn't read the book yet think it sucks too (Eat, Love, Pray for example. Never seen the film but the book was AWESOME and my sister won't read it, she's too embarrassed to be seen with it, lol). Re: Things you find irksome.

Date: February 16, 2012 11:23PM You know what they say about the English language being so hard to learn? That there are few rules and many exceptions. Like i before e except after c and certain words the list of which is too long to mention. LOL.
Yours Its Everything else is fair game, or are there more exceptions to that one? Re: Things you find irksome.

Date: February 17, 2012 01:01AM It's= IT + IS--that's it. IT'S a contraction! ITS is a possessive; same as 'theirs.' I can totally see why people get confused; if I wrote: "Coco's sweater..." it's a possessive and used the possessive mark (can that be called an apostrophe?).
Why would it be AN historic? I thought only H words that drop the actual H sound (an HOUR, for ex.) would qualify... Re: Things you find irksome.

Date: February 24, 2012 02:57PM Vinny,
I was watching Masterpiece Theater on Sunday, and noticed suddenly how different it was from regular fare: it was people sitting around or standing around and talking, in a normal tone of voice, and with natural sounds in the background. It was strange to realize how calm my mind was watching that, as opposed to a show with loud sound effects and altered digital images! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
