How do you like the idea of harnessing energy from drinking water? If you live in Portland, this could be a reality! This new system captures energy as water flows through the city’s pipes, creating hydropower without the negative environmental effects of something such as a dam. The small turbines in the pipes spin in the flowing water sending energy into the generator. “It’s pretty rare to find a new source of energy where there’s no environmental impact,” says Gregg Semler, CEO of Lucid Energy. “But this is inside a pipe, so no fish or endangered species are impacted. That’s what’s exciting.” These pipes can be installed into any system where water flows downward naturally with gravity. The companies are developing solutions for the individual consumers, but the most productive green energy scheme will be those that win the support of local governments. This system will have many benefits such as no disruption of fish migration, endangered species or stream flows. The system can mean great savings for water utilities, which utilize great amounts of electricity. Harvesting power from drinking water system holds great promise, especially for areas where much of the total energy use goes to providing the drinking water supply. “There’s a lot of energy in going into making sure we have safe, clean drinking water,” Semler says. “Our focus is really on helping water become more sustainable."
