Facts About Slavery And The War For Southern Independence

No other place of origin evokes such strong reactions and prejudices as the word “Southern”. It is all the more amazing when one considers the manner in which the early Republic was shaped and dominated by Southerners. Jefferson was the intellectual and spiritual architect of the Declaration and as the third President acquired the vast Louisiana Territory staking an early claim as far as the Pacific. Washington’s feats after he defeated the British at Yorktown include the first two terms as President, declining a third and an offer to be “King”. James Madison and Patrick Henry crafted a Constitution which has proved the most enduring and practical political document in the world. In fact, five of our first seven Presidents were Southern and it was James Knox Polk in the 1840’s who assured the U.S. would be a permanent transcontinental nation.

It is not only ironic but forgotten that it was once New England that suffered from the inferiority complex when compared to the feats of these Southern giants. The hinge upon which this extraordinary about-face occurred was the epic known now by the misnomer the “Civil War” and the events which preceded. That terrible conflict, much distorted by both traditional history and more recently the revisionist variety, holds the unfulfilled promise of our national destiny. We currently lack the will and the courage to learn its great truths, banish its dark lies, probe its obscured origins and confront its painful legacies. These myths and distortions must be replaced with historical facts if we desire the ultimate goal of national reconciliation. These include:

1) The slave trade prospered in West Africa 40 years before Columbus even discovered America. African tribes actually conducted raids on their neighbors for the express purpose of enslaving them. Tragically, slavery is practiced to this very day in places like the Sudan, Zaire and Nigeria.

2) Five European powers (Spain, Portugal, France, Holland and Britain) competing for New World influence all employed slavery, with Brazil (Portugal’s crown jewel) topping the list at 5.5 million slaves, half of the total brought to the New World. By 1860, their numbers had dwindled to a little over 2 million.

3) Only 6% of Africans reached our shores (about 600,000). By 1860 their numbers had increased (without new importations) to almost 4 million, the only slave population in recorded history to increase in captivity. Indigent Anglo-Celts filled the need for slaves (as indentured servants) in our early history by selling themselves into slavery because they could not afford the cost of passage. Most white Southerners are descendants of these early bondsmen.

4) Slavery was practiced in all thirteen colonies and NY was second to SC in 1776 as the colony with the highest percentage of slaves. Sojourner Truth was born Harriet Van Wagner, a slave in New York.

5) The liberal guilt, which today besets the North, has at its roots the profits from its vast slave trading which did nothing less than finance the Industrial Revolution. At the Constitutional Convention a continuation of the slave trade was a concession wrung by the Northern delegations from the South which allowed the North to continue the international trade another 20 years, until 1808.

6) New England slave ships continued plying the waters in defiance of the ban thereafter providing millions of slaves to French and Spanish sugar plantations in the Caribbean and South America.

7) The 1860 census reveals 95% of America’s slaves were owned by just 5% of the population while 85% of Southerners owned the land and structures they lived upon. This clearly establishes a large, independent non slave-holding class of yeoman farmers who later became the rank and file as well as the heart and soul of the Confederate army. To state their motive for fighting was the preservation of slavery is pure nonsense.

8) Secession as a doctrine was asserted by both North and South (Massachusetts threatened to secede on three separate occasions). The abolitionists had also advocated secession. It was only after 1830 when the control of national politics by the North became permanent that secession became associated exclusively with the South. As a nation conceived in secession and built upon the principle that government is contingent on the consent of the governed the South, or any other section of the country for that matter was completely within principle to assert the right.

9) Slavery was an inefficient, self-consuming labor system driven by cotton and already well-contained within its own soon to be encountered natural frontiers (the American desert). It required ever newer lands to replace that which it exhausted. The pattern was identical throughout the entire Western Hemisphere. It was doomed for extinction well before the end of the century if left alone.

10) Support for war among the general population North and South was weak prior to Sumter. The original seceding states contained only 30% of the Southern population. Four southern states subsequently voted down one ordinance of secession, four others would remain within the Union fold throughout the war. Northern war fever was equally tepid. The manipulation of Ft. Sumter by Seward and Lincoln which resulted in hostile fire polarized the vast middle and guaranteed a long and bloody conflict.

11) The war was unconstitutional and the closing of over 300 Northern newspapers and suspension of habeas corpus that jailed 13,000 Northern civilians (including elected officials) is without parallel in our entire history! The Lincoln Administration repeatedly violated amendments 1, 4,5,6,8, 9 and 10. By contrast Jefferson Davis closed not one paper nor jailed one citizen.

12) Warfare against citizens had ceased in Europe and a conduct of war eventually known as the “Geneva Conventions” codified in Europe during the 1860s forbade war against civilian centers. Contrary to this great humanitarian trend when it became apparent the Confederate armies could not be subdued in the field war was commenced against civilians. The depredations of Sherman in Georgia and the Carolinas as well as Hunter’s and Sheridan’s in Virginia mirror much witnessed in the recent Balkan war.

13) While the war is now represented as an altruistic crusade by the North to free the slaves the historical facts could not be more contradictory. The 1860 Republican Convention contained a platform plank promising protection for slavery everywhere it currently existed. Lincoln at his first inaugural address offered a constitutional amendment forever protecting slavery. A Congressional Resolution in 1862 reaffirmed the war’s aim was to “preserve the Union, not free the slave”.

14) The Emancipation Proclamation was met in the North by laws collectively known as “Black Codes”. These laws forbade entry, travel, work or residence by African-Americans in Northern states. The Proclamation was nothing but a clever ruse to stall imminent European recognition of the Confederacy. It freed no one. Slave states remaining in the Union (in the border states) not only retained their slaves, but also benefited from the strictest enforcement of the hated Fugitive Slave Law.

15) Blacks served willingly and honorably in the Confederate armies. Estimates of their numbers run as high as 100,000. Their motive was the same as their Federal counterpart; patriotism and the desire to disprove the misconceptions about their race. They fought no more to preserve slavery than to preserve Jim Crow during the Spanish-American War, or the doctrine of separate but equal in Korea.

16) The holocaust that resulted from the halt of the prisoner exchange is the sole responsibility of Stanton (Lincoln’s Secretary of War) and Grant. Its only design was to deprive the Confederacy of manpower with the full knowledge scores of thousands on both sides would perish. By the wars’ end, 30,000 on each side had died in captivity. The largest mass grave in the Western Hemisphere is located at Oakwood Cemetery in Chicago and contains the remains of 4200 Confederate P.O.W.s.

17) Had the South prevailed Robt. E. Lee would have undoubtedly been elected president (the Confederate Constitution limited the President to one six year term) and just as undoubtedly have taken immediate steps to free the slaves. This single act, proposed as it would have been by President Lee would have been accepted by the South and would have advanced race-relations light years.

18) As it was Reconstruction was the single most corrupt period of our entire history, pitting newly enfranchised Blacks against disenfranchised and occupied southern Whites. When in 1877 the last of the troops and carpetbaggers left only Blacks remained to face the rage and hatred of a humiliated South. The ugliness of the 1960s can be traced unbroken from the 1860s.

19) Recent interpretations, Ken Burns The Civil War foremost among them, while artfully crafted, serve only to perpetuate the victor’s propaganda that lies at the root of the unresolved conflict.

By the beginning of the 20th century the wounds of that war had finally begun to heal. Southerners embraced anew the Stars and Stripes while Robert E Lee became a national, not just a regional hero. Confederate Battle flags were returned to the restored states and Southern pride in the old Confederacy was not considered inconsistent with their fundamental American patriotism. Unfortunately South-bashing has replaced the mutual respect of a century ago. In an age of so-called tolerance there are no boundaries to the venom that is daily heaped upon all things and persons Southern; our faith, our heroes, our symbols and our history. It has reopened a rift that may ultimately and ironically fuel a desire for independence from a people who refuse to be homogenized or abused any further. This much is certain, until we understand and teach the Civil War truthfully the ink on the surrender documents signed in McLean’s parlor will never dry.

"You may remember news reports a few weeks ago about the nationwide reach of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s fundraising network.

The nonpartisan website PoliticalMoneyLine reported that her biggest political action committee, Friends of Hillary, has raised more than $20 million since the beginning of 2005.

Some of that money came, as it does in any campaign, from donors who gave less than $200. Such contributions do not have to be reported to the Federal Election Commission, and thus we have no information about them.

But of the more than $13 million that came from individuals whose contributions were reported, $5.63 million came from Mrs. Clinton’s “home” state, New York.

Donors in California gave $1.54 million. Washington, D.C., accounted for $603,360. And donors in Sen. Clinton’s actual “home” state, Illinois, gave $554,088.

The list goes on and on. Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan — until it gets to something called “MP.”

Do you know what “MP” is? Neither did I.

It stands for Marianas Protectorate, and it refers to the Northern Mariana Islands.

It turns out that Sen. Clinton has some big fans in Saipan. And most of them are in the family of one Willie Tan.

Last year, Tan gave $2,000 to Friends of Hillary. So did Raymond Tan, Siu Lin Tan and Josie Tan, all members of Willie Tan’s family.

FEC records indicate that the $2,000 checks from Willie, Raymond and Siu Lin were all received on Sept. 30, 2005, indicating they were sent together. The check from Josie was received Oct. 2.

Together, the Tan family’s $8,000 contribution to Friends of Hillary was more than the senator’s PAC received, separately, from residents of the entire states of Hawaii, Mississippi, Nebraska, Vermont, Utah, Kansas, Wyoming, Alaska, Idaho, South Dakota, Montana or North Dakota.

You might not have heard of Willie Tan, but he is quite well-known in the Northern Marianas as a garment-industry tycoon. Sometimes he’s also described as a sweatshop operator.

He is also well-known in the U.S. Congress, where some of Sen. Clinton’s fellow Democrats have denounced him and his factories, which pay subminimum wages, for years, mostly because of his tireless efforts to make sure those factories are never subjected to U.S. labor laws.

None of that has attracted much new coverage."

Hillary Clinton's Campaign has Taken Sweatshop Money

Less than a month ago, dengre here at dailykos posted diary about Hillary Clinton’s campaign containing a total of $10,000 in campaign contributions from the Tan family of the Mariana Islands’ sweatshops fame. What is the junior senator from New York doing to rectify this situation? So far, not much.

By now, many of you know what has been going on in the tiny Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands. If you haven’t, let me paraphrase the situation. This small chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean played a pivotal role in United States history when the Marine Corps freed the islands from the Japanese in World War II. By the late 1970’s, The Marianas were a territory of the United States. The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) follows almost all of the same laws and regulations America does, with the exceptions of immigration and labor. Those two issues have opened a virtual Pandora’s Box of problems on the islands. Garment factories began sprouting up, bringing foreign workers from China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand to the Marianas as a cheap source of labor. The garments being shipped from East Asia were being sent to the islands, where "Made in the USA" labels were being sewn, packaged, and shipped duty-free to American ports for public consumption. Companies like GAP, JCrew, Ann Taylor and Abercrombie & Fitch were using this cheap method of pleasing an unsuspecting American public.

The cheap source of labor brought to the islands had been forced to sign "Shadow Contracts," legally enforceable documents that state that the workers cannot get married, date, form labor unions, get pregnant, or go to church. Violation of these contracts results in imprisonment in their home countries. If the young, mostly female garment workers looked attractive, they would be sold to the local "karaoke clubs," sex slaves on American soil. Most of these young girls (and reportedly some young boys) are barely in their teens, and the shame is so high they will not tell their families of the conditions they work in. If the girls get pregnant from the Japanese tourists, visiting sailors, or corrupt politicians, they are told to get rid of the unborn babies. Since abortion is illegal on the Marianas, the girls resort to the back-alley abortions we’ve always been afraid to acknowledge exist.

The US Interior Department, recognized some of the wide-spread sweatshop abuses in the 1990’s. The Tan family, under fears that the US government could shut down their lucrative business of human trafficking and cheap labor for the clothing world, hired a lobbyist to represent their interests in Washington, DC.

And now we can see that the Tan Family has been giving Senator Hillary Clinton’s campaign donations. Regardless of how you feel about Senator Clinton, we can all agree that the evidence of her campaign accepting money from the same sweatshop owners that donate to crooks like Congressman John Doolittle could have serious implications on the general election in 2008. Whether it’s Clinton, Obama, Richardson, Edwards, Dodd, Vilsack, Gore, Clark or Kerry who wins the Democratic nomination, they could face a serious problem when it’s discovered that one of their own was linked to the same imprisoned briber they pushed so hard to get behind bars.

When Erasing Symbols of Slavery, Don't Forget the Democratic Party

In the aftermath of the mass shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, there are increasing and ever louder calls for the removal of all symbols, objects and persons connected to slavery or the Confederate States of America. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, and so all honors given him should be renamed, and all copies of the Declaration of Independence shredded. Robert E. Lee fought for the South, so all his effigies should be melted down and his rebel flags shredded, even though the Confederacy had nothing to do with the shooting. The Confederacy is no more; however, there still exists an organization that gained power from instituting slavery and segregation: the Democratic Party.

The founders of the Democratic-Republican Party were prominent slave holders, like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Its opponent, the Federalist Party, was founded by abolitionists, like Alexander Hamilton. While the main point of contention was Federalism vs anti-Federalism, the parties were strangely divided between abolitionists and anti-abolitionists. The Democratic-Republican Party split in 1832, due to the rivalry of John Quincy Adams (abolitionist) and Henry Clay (emancipator) against Andrew Jackson (slavery advocate). Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren (anti-abolitionist), James K. Polk (slavery compromiser), and Stephen A. Douglas (slavery fence-sitter) founded the current Democratic Party. The abolitionists wandered in the wilderness for a while, mixing with Whigs, and finally coalescing into the Republican Party in 1854, with abolition as its singular purpose.

During the first half of the 1800's, slavery was a contentious and persistent issue. Many slave owners and Democrats viewed slavery as a necessary evil, and abolition as unnecessary contention. Thomas Jefferson advocated for mass emancipation and deportation, for he viewed the black race as too childish, and based on the 1791 Haiti rebellion, unable to handle the anger engendered by their enslavement. Another common view held that the black race was simply unable to care for itself, and thus slaves were better off under the care of their masters, and that slavery only needed greater compassion, a view still held by the Democratic Party to this day. Why do you think Democrats promote government assistance programs for African Americans? If Democrat-advocated programs are taking care of blacks, then who is the master?

Even if they publicly stated that slavery was wrong, Democrats consistently worked against abolition and emancipation, often by compromising: abolitionists get a free state, slavers get a slave state. In this way, Democrats could publicly side against slavery, while obtaining the support of wealthy slave owners. Does this tactic seem familiar, on other issues? No slaver ever supported a Republican; they meant what they said and did what they meant, and it started a war.

But that was yesterday's Democratic Party! Guess again. After the Civil War, Democrats implemented new strategies to re-enslave or oppress African Americans. They introduced things like Jim Crow laws. President Woodrow Wilson (D) segregated the Army and Federal government. They were integrated by Republicans before him, and again by Republicans after Roosevelt. President Roosevelt appointed a leader of the Ku Klux Klan to the Supreme Court, and another KKK leader, Robert Byrd, was a prominent Democratic Senator for decades. Republicans had tried to pass the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts since the mid-50's, but Democrats blocked them, until President Johnson (D) gutted the Acts and passed them as part of a scheme to pacify blacks and snare their votes.

Presidents Roosevelt and Johnson passed public assistance, known as the War on Poverty, and heavily promoted it among African American neighborhoods. For many African American communities, it might be better termed the War on Prosperity. When real African American leaders like Bobby Gore rose up to free blacks from their new masters, Democrats like Mayor Richard J. Daley were more than happy to pound them back down. The Democratic Party has employed a new generation of house slaves, called community organizers, to convince African Americans that all of their woes are due to their skin, and to train blacks to beg for government to take care of them, unaware of their new master.

Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream of a colorblind society. How strange that after his death, two very well connected Democrats, Jessie Jackson (who was there when it happened) and Al Sharpton, profited greatly from fomenting racial tension in a race-aware society. The Democratic Party has an evil and vile history of slavery and racism, that continues to this day, and it deserves to be erased. Will any reporter ever ask Hillary or Barack when they will leave the Party?

Blind abandonment of symbols, organizations and persons for their association with slavery or the Confederacy is counter-productive. General Lee's battle flag is also known as the "rebel flag", and has long been a symbol against central authority. It was, after all, the symbol of the rank-and-file soldiers, for whom the Civil War was by far about resisting an intrusive Federal government, and by less about slavery. General Lee, who adopted the flag as the symbol of his army, had a rather interesting view on slavery: it was immoral and wrong, but The Allmighty intended it, for the betterment of the black race. A Merciful Providence, to whom two thousand years are but as a single day, that would lead the black race [in America] to better things.

What are these better things? One hundred and fifty years later, African Americans have been the victims of a public education, community organization and welfare scheme, carefully designed and orchestrated to tie them forever to their new master: Government under the Democratic Party. A better, more compassionate form of slavery, as advocated by the slavers. The new house slaves, the Jacksons, Sharptons and Crumps of the Democratic Party and Grievance Industry, have fixated African Americans on the ire of their slave blood and color of their skin, to distract them from the pecking party meant to subjugate them, but this tactic can backfire.

It should be obvious from the founding of this Country, but nearly every person here has slave blood. Rather than being privately owned, we were all government owned serfs (slaves, in another language), with kings, dukes, counts, barons and knights as our masters. A better, more compassionate form of all-powerful government, as Democrats love to advocate, is as illusory and oppressive as a better, more compassionate form of slavery. Absent the propaganda, African Americans are about as conservative and libertarian as it gets. Filled with the ire of slavery and ever more anti-authoritarian, perhaps they will one day forever leave the Democratic Party and join with other conservatives to reestablish the promise of a free America, for everyone.

Another issue which average Americans stumble over is the fraudulent notion of the left/right paradigm.  For those within the ranks of the New World Order, “left” and “right”, Democrat and Republican, are ultimately meaningless terms.  This is undeniable after one realizes that the leadership on both sides of the aisle exhibit almost identical policy initiatives and voting records.  When the two primary political entities of a system differ only in rhetoric but not in action, one has to question whether they are separate parties at all:

• It would have cost ten times less to free the slaves and reimburse their owners than fight the War

• The Northern armies were racially segregated, the Southern armies were racially integrated

• After emancipation 95 percent of all blacks voluntarily remained in the South

• Between 300,000 and 1 million African-Americans fought for the Confederacy

• Europe would have supported the South but she was scared off by Lincoln’s war threats

• Northern prisons had higher death rates than Southern ones

• The original Ku Klux Klan was an anti-Yankee organization with thousands of black members

• “Reconstruction” was a dismal failure, which is why the South is still recovering from the War

In Pulaski, Tennessee, a group of Confederate veterans convenes to form a secret society that they christen the “Ku Klux Klan.” The KKK rapidly grew from a secret social fraternity to a paramilitary force bent on reversing the federal government’s progressive Reconstruction Era-activities in the South, especially policies that elevated the rights of the local African American population.
The name of the Ku Klux Klan was derived from the Greek word kyklos, meaning “circle,” and the Scottish-Gaelic word “clan,” which was probably chosen for the sake of alliteration. Under a platform of philosophized white racial superiority, the group employed violence as a means of pushing back Reconstruction and its enfranchisement of African Americans. Former Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest was the KKK’s first grand wizard; in 1869, he unsuccessfully tried to disband it after he grew critical of the Klan’s excessive violence.
Most prominent in counties where the races were relatively balanced, the KKK engaged in terrorist raids against African Americans and white Republicans at night, employing intimidation, destruction of property, assault, and murder to achieve its aims and influence upcoming elections. In a few Southern states, Republicans organized militia units to break up the Klan. In 1871, the Ku Klux Act passed Congress, authorizing President Ulysses S. Grant to use military force to suppress the KKK. The Ku Klux Act resulted in nine South Carolina counties being placed under martial law and thousands of arrests. In 1882, the U.S. Supreme Court declared the Ku Klux Act unconstitutional, but by that time Reconstruction had ended and the KKK had faded away.
The 20th century witnessed two revivals of the KKK: one in response to immigration in the 1910s and ’20s, and another in response to the African American civil rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s.
