More Statistics on Gun Control

The Left is incessantly attempting to figure out new ways to take guns from law-abiding American citizens in the name of reducing gun crime. However, the facts clearly show that gun control only exacerbates violent crime. Here are facts proving this.

1. Washington, D.C.'s gun ban worsened the city's homicide rate.

In 1976, D.C. implemented a law that banned citizens from owning guns, as only police officers were allowed to carry firearms. Those who already owned guns were allowed to keep them only if they were disassembled or trigger-locked. Trigger locks could only be removed if the owner received permission from the D.C. police, which was rare.

According to prosecutor Jeffrey Shapiro, the results were not good. Annual homicides rose from 188 in 1976 to 364 in 1988, and then increased even further to 454 in 1993. The gun ban was struck down by the Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller, and homicides have steadily declined since then to 88 yearly murders in 2012. While Shapiro admits that there were other factors involved with the decline in homicides, lifting the gun ban clearly did not result in a rise in murders.

D.C. still has some of the strictest gun laws in the country and consequently is one of the most dangerous places in the country to live, but the facts clearly show that homicides in D.C. rose after the ban was implemented and then subsequently declined after the Supreme Court ruled the law unconstitutional.

2. The gun bans in Australia and Britain also didn't work. Australia and Britain are both hailed by the Left as evidence that gun control works. However, the facts tell a different story.

Two studies – a 2007 British Journal of Criminology study and a 2008 University of Melbourne study – concluded that Australia's temporary gun ban had no effect on the gun homicide rate. Crime Research Prevention Center president John Lott had similar findings.

"Prior to 1996, there was already a clear downward [trend] in firearm homicides, and this pattern continued after the buyback," wrote Lott. "It is hence difficult to link the decline to the buyback."

"Again, as with suicides, both non-firearm and firearm homicides fell by similar amounts," Lott continued. "In fact, the trend in non-firearms homicides shows a much larger decline between the pre- and post-buyback periods. This suggests that crime has been falling for other reasons. Note that the change in homicides doesn’t follow the change in gun ownership – there is no increase in homicides as gun ownership gradually increased."

In Britain's case, the Crime Research Prevention Center found that after the gun ban was implemented, there was initially a severe increase in the homicide rate, followed by a gradual decline once Britain beefed up their police force. However, there has only been one year where the homicide rate was lower than it was pre-ban:

Additionally, there was an 89 percent spike in gun crime from 1998/1999 to 2008/2009, all of which occurred after the gun ban.

A closer look at the actual facts show that the Left's favorite examples of Britain and Australia are actually examples of how gun control doesn't work.

3. The vast majority of mass shootings occur in gun-free zones.

The Crime Research Prevention Center determined that since 1950, nearly 99 percent of mass public shootings have occurred in gun-free zones. The terror attack in Orlando, FL and the shooting that murdered singer Christina Grimmie in June also took place in gun-free zones. The reason is obvious: deranged murderers want to be in a position to murder as many as possible, so they target areas where they're least likely to find armed resistance, which happen to be gun-free zones.

As Lott points out, there are 320 million people in America but only 628,000 police officers, so it's impossible for the police to protect everybody. That's why it's prudent for citizens to arm themselves.

4. According to Lott, there is a clear correlation between higher firearm ownership and reducing police killings.

The conclusion he came to was that there is a 3.6 percent decrease in police killings for every percentage point increase in those owning a firearm. Naturally, the inverse was also true: Lott found that "from 2013 to 2015, the six states (plus the District of Columbia) that banned open carry actually experienced higher rates of police death (20.2 versus 17.3 per 100,000 officers)."

No wonder a recent National Association of Chiefs of Police survey found that 86.4 percent of 20,000 police chiefs and sheriffs support concealed carry and are overwhelmingly against further gun control. In light of the recent murders of cops, it has become even more important to have an armed citizenry.

5. There is also a correlation between fewer mass public shootings and higher gun ownership.

According to Lott and the University of Chicago's Bill Landes, between 1977 and 1999 "right-to-carry laws reduced both the frequency and the severity of mass public shootings; and to the extent to which mass shootings still occurred, they took place in those tiny areas in the states where permitted concealed handguns were not allowed."

6. As the number of guns per person has increased, gun violence has declined.

This is according to the Centers for Disease Control, which found that gun ownership increased by 56 percent, and yet gun violence declined by almost 50 percent between 1993 and 2003. If the premise of gun control zealots were correct, then wouldn't gun violence have increased during that period of time?

7. The number of defensive gun uses are higher than the number of criminal firearm uses.

There was a range of 500,000 to over 3 million defensive gun uses in 2013, according to research from the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council published by the CDC. That same year, there were 11,208 firearm homicides and 414,562 nonfatal illegal gun uses, according to the CDC and National Justice Institute, respectively. Even when taking the low end of the defensive gun uses, it's clear that there are more defensive gun uses than criminal gun uses by Americans.

You are definitely the John Rose of gun advocates. And yet again and again you miss the point that if the MAJORITY of the populace were LIVING in the conditions that constitute PARADISE guns would be unnecessary.

Think of what you'd accomplish if you were to post how many fig trees an individual could plant in a given day under WILD conditions?!? (Over your radar obviously).

My perspective is that you are ADDICTED to the US against THEM struggle EVIL vs LIVE you want DIVISION more than UNITY and hide behind a gun that protects your COLD HEART...

And you're the John Rose of Permaculture Paradise.

I agree with what you said above and here -

And YES there would be no more murder when the conditions of Paradise are restored and people are not consuming VIOLENCE/meat...

But I think even if everyone in the world started eating raw vegan tomorrow, we wouldn't have a paradise for an extremely long time, maybe not ever. Because mankind ate cooked food and animals since whenever it was, our physiology has changed and our biological systems aren't the same; they've been compromised, whatever. So we may never get back to a Raw Permaculture Paradise.

I've been into the food/mood connection for decades - since 1985 - way before it was a thing - back when no one else believed that what you eat affects your behavior/emotions/mind, etc. So I definitely believe if everyone at all raw vegan we'd all be peaceful and happy, but how long would it take to restore our bodies to that condition, maybe it's not possible because our bodies are screwed up, we have evolved, mutated, from generations of cooked food and eating animals.

I'd like to know more about what the Permaculture Paradise would be like, would look like, how it would function socially. Must be beautiful. Most of us probably daydream or envision what the world would be like if everyone ate a raw vegan diet. I like to think there'd be no wars or violence.

Study: Gun homicides, violence down sharply in past 20 years

Gun-related homicides and crime are "strikingly" down from 20 years ago, despite the American public's belief that firearm crime is on the upswing, a new study said Wednesday.

Looking back 50 years, a Pew Research Center study found U.S. gun homicides rose in the 1960s, gained in the 1970s, peaked in the 1980s and the early 1990s, and then plunged and leveled out the past 20 years.

"Despite national attention to the issue of firearm violence, most Americans are unaware that gun crime is lower today than it was two decades ago," the researchers say.

A Pew survey of Americans in March found 56% believed gun-related crime is higher than 20 years ago and only 12% said it's lower. The survey said 26% believed it stayed the same and 6% didn't know.

The new study found U.S. firearm homicides peaked in 1993 at 7.0 deaths per 100,000 people. But by 2010, the rate was 49% lower, and firearm-related violence -- assaults, robberies, sex crimes -- was 75% lower in 2011 than in 1993, the study found.

Those drops parallel an overall decline in violent non-fatal crime, with or without a gun, the study said.

In fact, gun-related homicide rates in the late 2000s were "equal to those not seen since the early 1960s," the study found.

Explanations for the drops the past 20 years aren't clear, the study said.

"Researchers have studied the decline in firearm crime and violent crime for many years, and though there are theories to explain the decline, there is no consensus among those who study the issue as to why it happened," the researchers say in a summary.

MOST VIOLENT CRIME IS COMMITTED BY CRIMINALS.

Basic to the debates on gun control is the fact that most violent crime is committed by repeat offenders. Dealing with recidivism is key to solving violence.

71% of gunshot victims had previous arrest records.

64% had been convicted of a crime.

Each had an average of 11 prior arrests

63% of victims had criminal histories and 73% of that group knew their assailant (twice as often as victims without criminal histories).

74% of homicides during the commission of a felony involve guns.

Most gun violence is between CRIMINALS. This should be the public policy focus.

80% of people illegally carrying guns were prohibited from possessing guns, and that a minimum of 30% of the guns were stolen.

Criminals obtain most of their guns through their social network and personal connections. Rarely is the proximate source either direct purchase from a gun store.

Guns Are a Good Deterrent to Crime:

Fact: Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year or 6,849 every day. Most often, the gun is never fired and no blood (including the criminal’s) is shed.

Fact: Property crime rates are dropping (especially burglaries). The chart shows the legal handgun supply in America (mainly in civilian hands) relative to the property crime rate.

Fact: Every year 400,000 life-threatening violent crimes are prevented using firearms.

Fact: 60% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they knew the victim was armed. 40% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they thought the victim might be armed.

Fact: Felons report that they avoid entering houses where people are at home because they fear being shot.

Fact: 59% of the burglaries in Britain, which has tough gun control laws, are “hot burglaries” which are burglaries committed while the home is occupied by the owner/renter. By contrast, the U.S., with more lenient gun control laws, has a “hot burglary” rate of only 13%.

Fact: Washington DC has essentially banned gun ownership since 1976 and has a murder rate of 56.9 per 100,000. Across the river in Arlington, Virginia, gun ownership is less restricted. There, the murder rate is just 1.6 per 100,000, less than three percent of the Washington, DC rate.

Fact: 26% of all retail businesses report keeping a gun on the premises for crime control.

Fact: In 1982, Kennesaw, GA passed a law requiring heads of households to keep at least one firearm in the house. The residential burglary rate dropped 89% the following year.

74% of felons agreed that, “One reason burglars avoid houses when people are at home is that they fear being shot during the crime.”

57% of felons polled agreed, “Criminals are more worried about meeting an armed victim than they are about running into the police.”

PRIVATE OWNERSHIP OF GUNS IS EFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING CRIME

GUNS AND CRIME PREVENTION - Defensive Gun Use (DGU) vs Firearm Violent

CrimeFact: Every year, people in the United States use guns to defend themselves against criminals an estimated 2,500,000 times – more than 6,500 people a day, or once every 13 seconds. Of these instances, 15.7% of the people using firearms defensively stated that they “almost certainly” saved their lives by doing so.

Fact: Even the government’s estimate, which has a major methodology problem, estimates people defend themselves 235,700 times each year with guns
.

Fact: The number of times per year an American uses a firearm to deter a home invasion alone is 498,000.

Fact: In 83.5% (2,087,500) of these successful gun defenses, the attacker either threatened or used force first, proving that guns are very well suited for self-defense.

Fact: The rate of defensive gun use (DGU) is six times that of criminal gun use.

Fact: Of the 2,500,000 times citizens use guns to defend themselves, 92% merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers.

Fact: In most of the remaining 8% of defensive gun uses, a citizen never wounds his or her attacker (they fire warning shots), and in less than one in a thousand instances is the attacker killed.

Fact: In one local review of firearm homicide, more than 12% were civilian legal defensive homicides.

Fact: For every accidental death (802), suicide (16,869) or homicide (11,348) with a firearm (29,019), 13 lives (390,000) are preserved through defensive use.

Fact: When using guns in self-defense, 91.1% of the time, not a single shot is fired.

Fact: After the implementation of Canada’s 1977 gun controls prohibiting handgun possession for protection, the “breaking and entering” crime rate rose 25%, surpassing the American rate.

More Guns Do Not Stop More Crimes, Evidence Shows
More firearms do not keep people safe, hard numbers show. Why do so many Americans believe the opposite?
By Melinda Wenner Moyer on October 1, 2017

In Brief
The claim that gun ownership stops crime is common in the U.S., and that belief drives laws that make it easy to own and keep firearms.
But about 30 careful studies show more guns are linked to more crimes: murders, rapes, and others. Far less research shows that guns help.
Interviews with people in heavily gun-owning towns show they are not as wedded to the crime defense idea as the gun lobby claims.

Gary the Gun Nut
My dear fellow Gun Nutters™.
Today I have some good news for y’all! Just stop ‘n think about this for one darn cotton picking minute, if’n ya will…
Even if the friggin skaredycat libtards out there take way our guns, we Gun Nutters™ will still have access to hammers, which our good friends at the NRA sez are responsible for more deaths in the US than sum guns! (So that means they must be purty awesome weapons, rite?)
Matta o’ fact, did y’all know that even as I write this here letter ta y’all there are hundreds o’ thousands, probably even millions, o’ semiautomatic hammers available in this great nayshun o’ ours? Oh sure, they don’t call em that, they call em “nail guns”. Sounds harmless, rite? But don’t be fooled, these so-called nail guns are really semiautomatic hammers (‘n with the rite knowhow ‘n a little bit a tinkering could even be converted to fully automatic hammers).
And while so far there have only been a few fatalities from semiautomatic hammers, it is a fact that across the nayshun some 37,000 people have to go to to hospital emergency rooms each year due to serious injuries from these (potenshilly) lethal weapons.
And y’all should check this one out rite quicklike; ya can own as many o’ these semiautomatic hammers as y’all want!
All ya have to do’s go down to yer local hardware store where’n they‘s freely sold over the counter ‘n ya can buy one on the spot, no kwestyuns asked or background check rekwired. (I ask y’all, “How awesome is that?”)
And so I say to all ma feller Gun Nutter™ friends, I sez, “If’n thay take our semiautomatic rifles way frum us don’t worry bout it, we’ll still have our semiautomatic hammers ‘n I know tha tha friggin libtard carpenter’s unions will see ta it that we nevah lose those”.
Anyways, hope this here news helps ease any anxiety y’all might be havin bout losin the luv of yer lives, sose y’all can rest easy now ‘n have a good day.
Cheers!

Little-Known Gun Fact 1

Over the past 20 years, gun sales have absolutely exploded, but homicides with firearms are down 39 percent during that time and “other crimes with firearms” are down 69 percent.

2 Almost every mass shooting that has occurred in the United States since 1950 has taken place in a state with strict gun control laws. With just one exception, every public mass shooting in the USA since at least 1950 has taken place where citizens are banned from carrying guns.

3 The United States is Number 1 in the world in gun ownership, and yet it is only 28th in the world in gun murders per 100,000 people.

4 The violent crime rate in the United States actually fell from 757.7 per 100,000 in 1992 to 386.3 per 100,000 in 2011. During that same time period, the murder rate fell from 9.3 per 100,000 to 4.7 per 100,000.

5 Overall, guns in the United States are used 80 times more often to prevent crime than they are to take lives.

Little-Known Gun Fact 6

Despite the very strict ban on guns in the UK, the overall rate of violent crime in the UK is about 4 times higher than it is in the United States.

7 In one recent year, there were 2,034 violent crimes per 100,000 people in the UK. 8 In the United States, there were only 466 violent crimes per 100,000 people during that same year. Do we really want to be more like the UK?

9 The UK has approximately 125 percent more rape victims per 100,000 people each year than the United States does.

10 The UK has approximately 133 percent more assault victims per 100,000 people each year than the United States does. UK has the fourth highest burglary rate in the EU. 11 The UK has the second highest overall crime rate in the EU.

Little-Known Gun Fact 12

Down in Australia, gun murders increased by about 19 percent and armed robberies increased by about 69 percent after a gun ban was instituted.

13 The city of Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States. So has this reduced crime? The murder rate in Chicago was about 17 percent higher in 2012 than it was in 2011, and Chicago is now considered to be “the deadliest global city,”

14 After the city of Kennesaw, Georgia passed a law requiring every home to have a gun, the crime rate dropped by more than 50 percent over the course of the next 23 years and there was an 89 percent decline in burglaries.

Little-Known Gun Fact 15

According to Gun Owners of America, the governments of the world slaughtered more than 170 million of their own people during the 20th century.

(Yet The Libs want The Government to take all our guns!)

The vast majority of those people had been disarmed by their own governments. Why? It wasn’t to stop crime.
