The once great American city of San Francisco is now routinely criticized by tourists and residents alike for rampant crime, filthy streets, and a homeless problem that’s out of control.

It’s beginning to look like something out of a science fiction film set in a dystopian future where the population has been reduced to two classes. One class is wealthy, progressive, and politically connected. The other class is a poor, dependent underclass which will never vote out their benevolent overlords.

Many people who fall in between are leaving.

The left loves to talk about income inequality. Yet in San Francisco, undoubtedly one of the bluest cities in the nation, the wealth gap has grown so vast that even people who would qualify as high income in other parts of the country are considered economically disadvantaged.

In San Francisco, households earning $117,000 qualify as ‘low income’

The increasingly steep cost of living in the Bay Area means that even earning six figures in San Francisco might not be enough to make ends meet.

A new report from the Department of Housing and Urban Development says that a San Francisco metro area family of four bringing in $117,400 a year qualifies as “low income.” Last year, the cut off was $105,350. An annual salary of $82,000 now puts single adults in the “low income” bracket as well.

Other notoriously expensive cities aren’t nearly as extreme. In New York, the “low income” threshold for a family of four is $83,450 per year. In Los Angeles, it’s $77,500.

Making ends meet for a family of four in San Francisco requires a household income of $92,139, according to MIT’s living wage calculator.

These disparities are not only affecting the way people live. They are having an adverse effect on the city’s economy because people see the city as unsafe.

While the debate might rage on as to what constitutes a “@#$%&” of a country, one thing is not up for debate: the American city of San Francisco is a @#$%&.

We know this thanks to an interactive map created in 2014 called Human Wasteland.

The map charts all of the locations for human excrement “incidents” reported to the San Francisco police during a given month. The interactive map shows precise locations of the incidents by marking them with @#$%& emojis:

The project shows that the heatmap for poo is most heavily concentrated directly in downtown San Francisco.

According to the SF Weekly, San Francisco has a major @#$%& problem:

St. George Alley can harbor up to 30 piles of @#$%& per week, Department of Public Works employee Steve Mahoney told SFist. That’s exceptional. But it also illustrates a seemingly intractable problem in a city with limited public restrooms, constricted homeless services, and a line of filthy JCDecaux bunker toilets that often sit unused.

So if you live in San Francisco and are offended by Trump’s comments, just watch where you’re stepping.

San Francisco, one of the most iconic destinations for travel worldwide, is hemorrhaging tourism and business dollars at an alarming rate. And it’s not due to renovations at Moscone Convention Center, as the local business press would have you believe.

It’s the city’s homeless population – growing as fast as the piles of hypodermic needles, trash, and human feces left in the downtown streets.

If you’ve ever left your heart in the city by the bay, you may want to fetch it before it catches a virulent disease.

A FECULENCE MAELSTROM

An investigative report by a local NBC affiliate uncovered the glaring inconsistency of one of the wealthiest cities in the world being undone by the chronic homelessness. The report focuses on a 153-block survey of San Francisco’s downtown – a mecca of five-star restaurants and hotels, art museums, and nightlife attractions as well as City Hall, schools, playgrounds, and a police station.

In only a few hours, investigative reporters found piles of garbage on every street, over 100 used syringes, and 300 piles of human feces. Yep, folks, piles of public @#$%& are now token obstacles for locals and visitors to hopscotch around on field trips to museums and such.

Adelita Orellana, who teaches preschool children in downtown, said, “We see @#$%&, we see pee, we see needles, and we see trash.” Or as her 3-year-old student A’Nylah explained, “There’s @#$%& in there.”

We are in America, aren’t we?

Dr. Lee Riley, an infectious disease expert at University of California, Berkeley, is pondering the answer to that question:

“If you do get stuck with these disposed needles you can get HIV, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, and a variety of other viral diseases. If you happen to inhale (dried feces) that, it can also go into your intestine. The contamination is … much greater than communities in Brazil or Kenya or India.”

HOW TO FLUSH THE PROBLEM

Local hotel and hospitality owners and operators, losing bookings and hearing the harshest of criticisms from past customers, seem to be the only ones concerned with the San Francisco brand. Between cable cars clanging, the mentally ill screaming, and the brisk, salty, ocean air tinged with the rankest of waste scents wafting through bistros and bakeries, public officials seem to have stuck their heads in the sand.

Through the hospitality industry’s charitable efforts, homelessness programs have received 20 tons of furniture and fixtures and their employees regularly volunteer at Project Homeless Connect.

But wait, the city does its part by spending $305 million a year to reduce the problem, right? Yes, and the issue has grown into a public health crisis.

Instead of addressing the homelessness, they fling extra money at certain budget line items, such as trash removal: Liberal government at its finest.

Expecting to pass this month is the proposed new city budget that adds an additional $12.8 million over the next two years to street cleaning. An eye-popping amount, when you consider that the budget has almost doubled in the past five years alone, increasing from $33.4 million to $65.4 million.

Perhaps the newly minted mayor has a plan.

HANG ON, HELP IS ON THE WAY…OR NOT

Mayor London Breed campaigned in part on cleaning up the streets, and has given herself a deadline of three-months after being sworn into office to get it done. So just what is Mayor Breed’s plan for the issue that had so many before her completely flummoxed? Point the finger at those responsible for assisting:

“I work hard to make sure your programs are funded for the purposes of trying to get these individuals help, and what I am asking you to do is work with your clients and ask them to at least have respect for the community — at least, clean up after themselves and show respect to one another and people in the neighborhood.”

A night cap at Top of the Mark, a cable car ride to Union Square, a breathtakingly scenic drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, and dodging an out of control homeless population enabled by the city’s representatives – not what tourists, convention-goers, and locals call a good time in the city by the bay. Yes, somewhere crooner Tony Bennett is sobbing uncontrollably.

It’s a sad state of affairs when the newly elected mayor, who grew up in the city, has no other plan to eradicate the potentially disease-causing filth but to politely ask the homeless population to “clean up after themselves.”

In other words, “Please do not poo on the footpath.” She established her timeline on solving the crisis and the world is watching and waiting to see what happens in the once glorious city.

Mayor Breed’s clock started July 11 as she took her oath of office. Tick tock, Mayor, tick tock.

It’s veggie-friendly.

Considered one of the most “veg-friendly” cities in the US by PETA, San Francisco is not only an oasis of vegetarian and vegan restaurants, according to VegSF, but also has myriad vegetarian and vegan-friendly menus, even at restaurants with meat dishes. You can even eat the fruit that grows on the trees in certain public parks in San Francisco. And with the vegan paradise that is Berkeley right across the bay, herbivores will never run out of dining options.
It has a vibrant spiritual life.

Meditation, yoga and Eastern philosophy are a part of the city’s DNA, thanks to a long history of Eastern religious studies at its cultural centers. The Buddhist philosopher and writer Alan Watts, a transplant to San Francisco from England, introduced thousands to Eastern philosophy in the late 1950s and early 1960s (his TV series “Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life” aired in San Francisco and helped spread Zen ideology in the U.S.). Live music, art, theater and literary events are all over the Bay, all year round — and attending these cultural events could have some big health benefits. Studies have found that attending cultural events could lower blood pressure and also promote mental health by warding off anxiety and depression.
“When it comes to nourishing the soul, [San Francisco’s] vibrant arts, entertainment, and recreational offerings set it apart,” wrote Sarah Mahoney and Susan Coenen as part of a Prevention study of the 25 healthiest, happiest cities in America. “While it may seem obvious that those options make people happier, they also make them healthier.”
It’s close to nature.

The stress-relieving and happiness-boosting benefits of spending time in nature are well documented. Aside from the many green spaces and beaches within San Francisco proper, SFers can easily reconnect with nature by driving only a short distance from the city. Marin Headlands, Point Reyes National Seashore, Muir Woods and Mount Tamalpais State Park offer miles of hiking and biking trails in some of the most beautiful natural landscapes on the West Coast.
Yoga is everywhere — even in the airport.

Yoga studios are nearly as ubiquitous in San Francisco as coffee shops. The city’s New Age roots gave rise to a number of yoga and meditation centers and many of them are still popular today. And that’s great for city residents, who can enjoy the practice’s strength and flexibility training as well as it’s calming effect on stress. As residents of the eighth-best city for bikers by Bicycling Magazine, Bay Area drivers are used to sharing the road with bikers: Since 2010, San Francisco has installed 20 new miles of bike lanes, 25 bike-parking areas, and traffic signals giving riders the right-of-way. The new Bay Bridge even included the installation of a $500 million hanging bike lane, the first of its kind.
And the research shows that biking and bike commuting can have a huge impact on health. One Danish study found that bikers had a lower risk of death from any cause than their more sedentary counterparts. Why don't you post about your way of living and ideas and info on I-forget-what-you-call-it - your nomadic permaculture lifestyle. Or your beliefs about what would be the ideal society or what we can do about some of our cultural issues - like what do you think about immigration, do you believe in nation-states, national sovereignty or rather just everybody in the world moves around and lives wherever they want to. Do you believe in having any government anyplace or just one-world, global government? Then how do we get rid of the horrible governments/dictators in some of the horrible countries, etc., and all the violent, evil people in the world.

Toxic waste from illegal marijuana farms alarms authorities



WEAVERVILLE, Calif. – Pollution from illegal marijuana farms deep in California's national forests is far worse than previously thought, and has turned thousands of acres into waste dumps so toxic that simply touching plants has landed law enforcement officers in the hospital.

The volume of banned or restricted pesticides and illegally applied fertilizers in the woods dwarfs estimates by the U.S. Forest Service in 2014, when a top enforcement official testified that the pollution was threatening forest land in California and other states.

California accounts for more than 90 percent of illegal U.S. marijuana farming, with much of it exported to other states from thousands of sites hidden deep inside forested federal land, and more on private property, law enforcement officials said. The state is still developing a licensing system for growers even though legal retail sales of the drug will begin next year, and medical use has been allowed for decades.

Ecologist Mourad Gabriel, who documents the issue for the Forest Service as well as other state, local and federal law enforcement agencies, estimates California's forests hold 41 times more solid fertilizers and 80 times more liquid pesticides than Forest Service investigators found in 2013.


Growers use fertilizers and pesticides long restricted or banned in the United States, including carbofuran and zinc phosphide. In previous years, it was commonly sold fertilizers and pesticides that were used illegally, law enforcement officials said.

Exposure to the pesticides has sent at least five law enforcement officials and two suspects to hospitals with skin rashes, respiratory problems and other symptoms, court documents and state data show.

Use of any chemicals in national forests is against federal law, as pesticides have killed sensitive species and fertilizers can cause algae blooms and bacteria problems in rivers and streams.


According to unpublished data seen by Reuters, Gabriel, who has visited more than 100 sites in California and is widely considered the top expert on toxics at marijuana farms, calculated that federal land in California contains 731,000 pounds of solid fertilizer, 491,000 ounces of concentrated liquid fertilizer and 200,000 ounces of toxic pesticides.

If much of the pesticide and fertilizer were released into a single stream rather than scattered around the state in leaky containers, the volume would exceed the amount of chemicals spilled in 2014 into the Elk River in West Virginia, which left 300,000 residents without access to potable water.

"We're getting contamination over and over again at those locations," said Gabriel, as toxins move from unsafe containers into the soil and water.

At sites that state officials said they had cleaned up completely, his team found 30-50 percent of the chemicals were still there.

"They are like superfund sites," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Escobar, whose Fresno office has filed numerous marijuana-related environmental damage cases. Superfund sites are those targeted by the U.S. government for hazardous waste cleanup because of the risk to human health or the environment.

Federal prosecutors have also charged pot growers with environmental crimes in Alaska, Oregon and Washington.


The most toxic sites cost as much as $100,000 to clean up, leaving taxpayers with a bill that could reach $100 million or more in California alone.

"These places aren't safe to go into," said state Assemblyman Jim Wood, who has pushed for cleanup funding.

Use of toxics has grown over the past three to four years, and chemicals have been found at sites in Oregon and Washington as well, said Chris Boehm, the Forest Service's assistant director for enforcement and investigation. "In the last couple years we've lost a lot of the ground we had picked up in eradicating and cleaning up the new sites we find."

The expense and danger of cleanup has created a backlog of 639 illegal marijuana farms awaiting restoration in California, according to U.S. Forest Service data compiled for Reuters. Each farm covers up to 50 acres.

Gabriel said that figure understated the problem, and pointed out that toxics are used at thousands of illegal farms on private and tribal land. After a year or two, growers often abandon sites, leaving containers of chemicals so toxic a quarter-teaspoon could kill a bear.

As California moves to license growers, officials plan to regulate the use of chemicals. But rules can only be enforced against those who cultivate pot legally.

"There are a lot of incentives for continuing to grow illegally," said Washington Fish and Wildlife Deputy Chief Mike Cenci, citing growers' distaste for taxes and red tape.

"We've got 4,000 illegal grows in our county," said Keith Groves, a supervisor of Trinity County in Northern California. "I'll be happy if we can get 500 of them to become licensed."

Urban Blight: A few days ago, filmmaker Michael Moore tweeted, “Flint has voted for Dems for 84 straight yrs” and wanted to know, “What did it get us?” He’s actually on to something.

Don’t drink the water in Flint, Mich. Federal and state officials botched a water supply switch there and ended up contaminating the city’s drinking water with lead. It’s a sad and infuriating story that has gone on far too long. It’s not quite a humanitarian crisis -- blessedly, we don’t see many of those in this country -- but it is a mess.

Of course blame has been liberally tossed around. Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has been sued. Moore wants him arrested. (Obviously there's a limit to Moore's ability to think clearly, and he reached it with his Flint tweet.) Some are convinced that the private sector is the villain, because, after all, isn’t it always? The loopy left even says that the Koch brothers are at fault.

But let’s backtrack to Moore’s tweet. Flint is indeed a Democratic Party bastion. Don’t its decades of Democratic dominance deserve some of the blame? It’s the city’s "Democratic rulers," Reason magazine’s Robby Soave reminds us, who have "robbed city residents blind to pad the pockets of public sector unions." They’ve also been in charge as Flint has become one the country’s poorest cities (the second poorest, says the Census Bureau, for a city of its size), and a haven for criminals -- it’s the most dangerous city in America, according to Business Insider.

Flint is not alone, though. America is awash with troubled, dysfunctional cities that have been electing Democratic mayors for decades.

Detroit last elected a Republican mayor in 1957. It is now the model of urban failure -- it’s recognized more for its poverty, crime, rot and bankruptcy than the great cars that it turned out into the early 1970s. It is the poorest big city in the nation, with almost 40% of the population living below the poverty line. The website Law Street actually ranks Detroit ahead of Flint as the country's most dangerous city. Either way, it’s clear that both cities have institutionalized crime problems.

Detroit is also a pit of political corruption. Just in recent years, one mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, was convicted of corruption and sent to federal prison for 28 years, while building inspectors have been indicted on federal felony bribery charges and a former city council member was investigated in a bribery and kickback scandal.

Chicago’s last GOP mayor was elected in 1927. The nation’s third-largest city is home to some of the worst inner-city violence imaginable. More than 2,300 people were shot there last year, and nearly 400 lost their lives to homicides.
Its finances are just as grim. "Chicago is so broke," IBD contributor Stephen Moore explained months ago, "that its bonds are junk status, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel had to go hat in hand last week to the state capital, Springfield, for bailout money to pay the bills." Things have been rotten enough, Moore said, to send "a record number of people ... fleeing Cook County, home to Chicago." Only a little more than half of the city's pension liabilities are funded.

St. Louis has been electing Democratic mayors since 1949. The Gateway to the West has become the gateway for crime. Law Street says that it’s the fourth most dangerous city in the country, Forbes says it’s the second. It had the sixth-highest poverty rate among big cities in 2014.

The last GOP mayor of Philadelphia left office in 1952. A few years ago, Moore identified it as a favorite to follow Detroit into bankruptcy.

Both Baltimore and Oakland had Republican mayors as late as the 1960s. In the era of Democratic rule, both are now more well known for their crime and poverty problems than for their charm and character.

Newark, N.J., hasn't had a GOP mayor in more than a century. It was ranked as the fifth-worst city to live in in 2015. Detroit, of course, was first.

When Democrats are in control, cities tend to go soft on crime, reward cronies with public funds, establish hostile business environments, heavily tax the most productive citizens and set up fat pensions for their union friends. Simply put, theirs is a Blue State blueprint for disaster.

The Governor of a State does not control the State alone. Duh!

Our Founding Fathers - those rich old white men slave-owners - set up a Government System - called a Republic - that consisted of checks and balance/division of powers/equal branches of Government so that the President (read Governor) would not be all powerful. The same with the State Governments.

We have three branches of Government - The Executive (President), the Legislature and the Judiciary. The same for the individual States, but they're called the Executive (Governor), the Legislature and the Judiciary branch.

So the President does not run or control the Federal Government all by himself. And the Governor does not run or control the State Government all by himself.

So - who runs the State? Why, that would be the Governor, the Legislature (consisting of the House of Delegates or Representatives and the Senate) and the Judiciary.

So therefore when you say "Who runs the State?" you have to take into consideration all three branches of the State Government. NOT JUST THE GOVERNOR. The Governor does not control the State alone! Duh!

San Francisco Launching New ‘Po0p Patrol’ to Deal With Dirty Streets

While San Francisco has been doing its best to become a model progressive city by doing dumb things like banning plastic straws, its streets have gone to hell.

Human excrement on sidewalks has become such a pervasive problem that the city is launching a “Po0p Patrol.”

Heather Knight reports at the San Francisco Chronicle:

In a city where filthy sidewalks are many residents’ No. 1 complaint, City Hall has come up with a new way to deal with No. 2.

It sounds like silly elementary school banter, but it’s real. San Francisco is about to launch the Po0p Patrol.

In about a month, a team of five Public Works staffers will begin patrolling the alleys around Polk Street and other hot spots in a vehicle equipped with a steam cleaner.

They’ll begin their shifts in the afternoon, as the city starts losing its sheen from overnight cleaning. The Po0p Patrol’s mission? To spot and clean piles of feces before anybody complains about them.

“We’re trying to be proactive,” explained Public Works director Mohammed Nuru. “We’re actually out there looking for it.”

We’re all out there looking for it, our eyes trained on the sidewalks as we walk so as to avoid that awful squishy feeling.

I admit to giggling when Nuru told me about plans for the Po0p Patrol the other day. But in a city where people called 311 to report feces a whopping 14,597 times between Jan. 1 and Monday morning, public piles of po0p are serious business.

In this video report from the local ABC News affiliate, one woman asks an excellent question. “It’s a great idea. Can we get rid of the po0pers as well?”

We wish we could say this was a satire piece, but a new story in the San Francisco Chronicle reveals just how lucrative collecting sh*t actually is.

It's but the latest in a string of shocking revelations to hit headlines throughout the summer exposing how deep San Francisco's crisis of vast amounts of vagrant-generated feces covering its public streets actually runs (no pun intended).

We detailed last week how city authorities have finally decided to do something after thousands of feces complaints (during only one week in July, over 16,000 were recorded), the cancellation of a major medical convention and an outraged new Mayor, London Breed, who was absolutely shocked after walking through her city: they established a professional "po0p patrol".

As described when the city initially unveiled the plan, the patrol will consist of a team of five staffers donning protective gear and patrol the alleys around Polk Street and other "brown zones" in search of everything from hepatitis-laden Hershey squirts to worm-infested-logs. At the Po0p Patrol's disposal will be a special vehicle equipped with a steam cleaner and disinfectant.

The teams will begin their shifts in the afternoon, spotting and cleaning piles of feces before the city receives complaints in order "to be proactive" in the words of the Public Works director Mohammed Nuru, co-creator of the po0p patrol initiative.

While at first glance it doesn't sound like the type of job people will be knocking down human resources doors to apply for, the SF Chronicle has revealed just how much each member of this apparently elite "po0p patrol" team will cost the city: $184,678 in salary and benefits.

The surprisingly high figure is buried in the middle of the SF Chronicle's story on Mayor London Breed's morning walks along downtown streets with her staff, unannounced beforehand to her police force and department heads so she can view firsthand what common citizens endure on a daily basis.

After quoting Mayor Breed, who acknowledges, “We’re spending a lot of money to address this problem,” the following San Francisco Public Works budget items are presented:

A $72.5 million-a-year street cleaning budget
$12 million a year on what essentially have become housekeeping services for homeless encampments
$2.8 million for a Hot Spots crew to wash down the camps and remove any biohazards
$2.3 million for street steam cleaners
$3.1 million for the Pit Stop portable toilets
$364,000 for a four-member needle team
An additional $700,000 set aside for a 10-member, needle cleanup squad, complete with it’s own minivan
And crucially, there's now "the new $830,977-a-year Po0p Patrol to actively hunt down and clean up human waste."

The SF Chronicle casually notes in parenthesis, "By the way, the po0p patrolers earn $71,760 a year, which swells to $184,678 with mandated benefits."

Though we're sure the city's giant $11.5 billion budget can handle the burgeoning clean-up costs, likely to blow up even further, we're not sure how property owners paying hefty land and sales taxes which have soared over the past years will react.

Sh*tty policies lead to sh*tty consequences. Just like Mayor de Blasio and the NY Crazy Council, San Francisco thought it was a good idea to decriminalize public urination and defecation. Now they have to spend nearly $1M to clean up po0p. [www.sfchronicle.com]

Last time I drove thru Alabama and Missisipi people crap in every little burg one picks up anything paper, trash, Broken down trailers and crap everywhere.
