Minnesota state Rep. Ilhan Omar won the Democratic primary on Tuesday for the state’s 5th Congressional District, putting her on a path to make history.

Omar defeated four other Democratic candidates in a crowded race to fill the seat that opened up when Rep. Keith Ellison (D) announced his bid to become the state’s attorney general. She’ll face Republican Jennifer Zielinski in November’s general election. In the solidly Democratic district, Omar is the favorite to prevail.

If Omar wins the seat, she will become one of the nation’s first Muslim women in Congress ? she’ll likely be joined in the historic feat by fellow Democrat Rashida Tlaib, who won her primary for a House seat in Michigan last week. Tlaib is all but guaranteed to win in November in her heavily Democratic district, earning a spot in the nation’s history books.

For Omar ? who was born in Somalia and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before coming to the U.S. at age 12 ? breaking barriers will be nothing new. When she was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2016, she became the nation’s first Somali-American legislator.

“I hope my candidacy would allow people to have the boldness to encourage people who don’t fit into [a] particular demographic to seek office,” she told HuffPost that year. “To believe in the good will of the people to select someone they believe shares their vision and not necessarily their identity.”

Humble beginnings
Ilhan Omar's family migrated to the US while she was still in her teens. Prior to that, she had spent four years at arefugee camp in Kenya following their escape from the civil war in Somalia. Her family moved to Arlington, Virginia, before they finally settled in Minneapolis in 1997. She was able to learn English in three years and later graduated with a degree in political science.

Omar, a longtime political and community activist, previously worked as a senior policy aide and campaign manager for Andrew Johnson who is a member of the Minneapolis City Council. She currently works as director of policy initiatives for the Women Organizing Women Network. The group counsels East African women on civic participation and leadership.

Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American Muslim to be elected to a state legislature, is featured on a cover promoted Thursday for a Time Magazine special project on women who have broken barriers in their fields.

Ever since the midterm election, conservative media in the United States have targeted with special zeal Ilhan Omar, an incoming Somali-American Democratic congresswoman and a devout Muslim who wears hijab. In response to Democrats’ push to remove a headwear ban on the House floor to accommodate Omar, conservative commentator and pastor E.W. Jackson complained on a radio show that Muslims were transforming Congress into an “Islamic republic.”

The Democratic Party has several rising political stars with Arab or Muslim backgrounds, all of whom have become objects of such conspiracy theories. But it’s not only American conservatives who have been indulging in this culture war. The organized attacks have also been coming from abroad—specifically, from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The midterm elections have amplified an existing suspicion in Middle Eastern media of Muslim political activism in the United States. Academics, media outlets, and commentators close to Persian Gulf governments have repeatedly accused Omar, Rashida Tlaib (another newly elected Muslim congresswoman), and Abdul El-Sayed (who made a failed bid to become governor of Michigan) of being secret members of the Muslim Brotherhood who are hostile to the governments of Saudi Arabia and the UAE. On Sunday, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya published a feature insinuating that Omar and Tlaib were part of an alliance between the Democratic Party and Islamist groups to control Congress. The article accused the two of being “anti-Trump and his political team and options, especially his foreign policy starting from the sanctions on Iran to the isolation of the Muslim Brotherhood and all movements of political Islam.”

In another example, a talk show on Saudi-owned station MBC discussed the Muslim congresswomen and more broadly the implications of Democrats taking the House. Prominent Arab anchor Amr Adib debated the matter with Egyptian political scientist Moataz Fattah, who suggested that Trump’s successful combating of Islamists would be undermined by the Democrats’ victory. The attacks have become so ubiquitous in the Persian Gulf that the trend itself is the subject of debate, both online and on television.

Occasionally these attacks have been made by officials of those governments, in apparent anxiety that their countries’ expensive public relations and lobbying efforts might be undermined. Just hours after Omar won her election, for example, a staffer at the Saudi Embassy in the United States accused her of following the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood, which he said has permeated the Democratic Party. “She will be hostile to the Gulf and a supporter of the political Islam represented in the Brotherhood in the Middle East,” tweeted Faisal al-Shammeri, a cultural advisor at the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission to the United States, which is part of the embassy, and a writer for Al Arabiya.

El-Sayed, an American born to Egyptian immigrants, noticed the attacks from the region during his campaign. Media in the Middle East amplified accusations by a Republican candidate for governor, Patrick Colbeck, that El-Sayed had links to the Brotherhood. Egyptian newspaper Youm7, for instance, reported that El-Sayed likely lost the election to his link to the “radical” Nation of Islam, and his relationship with Muslim-American activist Linda Sarsour, “known for her radical views.”

El-Sayed told me that political elites in places like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE felt threatened by American politicians who are also Muslim. For average Middle Easterners, his story is inspiring. (The clearest instance of Middle Easterners drawing such inspiration, ironically, was the first presidential election victory of Barack Obama, who faced false accusations of being a Muslim.)

The rise of politicians like El-Sayed, Omar, and Tlaib also undermines a core argument advanced by dictators in the Middle East: that their people are not ready for democracy. “People would not have access to power in their countries but they would if they leave; this destroys the argument by Sisi or bin Salman,” El-Sayed said, referring to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. “What’s ironic is there is no way I would aspire to be in leadership in Egypt, the place of my fathers.”

American allies in the region also fear that the Democratic Party’s new Arab leaders will advocate for political change in their countries. Having spent millions of dollars for public relations campaigns in Western capitals, the Persian Gulf countries feel threatened by any policymakers with an independent interest in and knowledge of the region. They have thus framed these officials’ principled objections to regional violations of human rights and democratic norms as matters of personal bias. One commentator, who is known to echo government talking points and is frequently retweeted by government officials, recently spread the rumor that Omar is a descendent of a “Houthi Yemeni” to undermine her attacks on the Saudi-led war on Yemen.

The most common attack online by the Saudi-led bloc on the Muslim-American Democrats has been to label them as members of the Muslim Brotherhood, or more generally as ikhwanji, an extremist catch-all term. These attacks started long before this year’s elections. In 2014, the UAE even announced a terror list that included the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) for its alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The attacks attempting to tie Omar and Tlaib to the Muslim Brotherhood started in earnest after CAIR publicly welcomed their election to Congress. One UAE-based academic, Najat al-Saeed, criticized Arabic media for celebrating the two Muslim women’s victories at the midterms, and pointed to CAIR’s support for them as evidence of their ties to the Brotherhood.

The attacks on Omar have also indulged in racism. While Tlaib and Omar have both been the targets of smears, it’s been easier for Gulf Arabs to single out Omar for insults because of her African heritage. Negative stereotypes about Africans— who serve as poorly treated migrant workers in the Gulf’s oil economy— are widespread throughout the region.

This was evident in the social media campaign launched last month against Omar by Ahmad al-Farraj, a Saudi writer and researcher with UAE-based Trends Research and Advisory—a firm founded by a former Dubai police official and consultant. He attacked Omar for criticizing Trump’s muted response to the CIA assessment that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman likely directed the murder of former U.S.-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul. “These miserable beings coming from the underdeveloped worlds are more hateful to their race and to you than any enemy,” Al Farraj tweeted to his more than 60,000 followers. A steady stream of racist attacks followed in response. One person tweeted a picture of Omar accompanied by the caption “whenever you buy a slave, buy a stick along with the slave. The slave is miserable filth.”

Other than the flurry of racist comments, Omar was trolled based on two false accusations: that she was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and that she had married her brother. Hashtags also began trending with dozens of anonymous accounts tweeting slightly different variations of the same language, and echoing known government-affiliated accounts. The pattern is typical of Twitter troll armies that seem to be used regularly by Mohammed bin Salman to silence the kingdom’s critics.

It should be little surprise that America’s authoritarian allies have responded with panic and fear to voices like Tlaib and Omar. These regimes have always benefited from the false choice they present to policymakers in the West—in Muslim countries, they say, extremists are the only alternative to dictators. That argument is eloquently undermined by American politicians who share those regimes’ religion, but not their cynicism about democracy.

I don't know anything about Saudi Arabia -

I just don't like The Lib Hypocrisy in supporting Omar when:

1. She has Campaign Finance Violations, (Using campaign funds for travel expenses; using campaign funds for personal use - divorce) yet wanting to impeach Trump for Campaign Finance Violations when his paying 'hush money' to Smokey Daniels Did Not Violate Campaign Finance Law.

2. I don't like that Omar Violated House Rules by Accepting Speaking Fees from institutions that lobby the Legislature, and while she is a member of the House committee that makes funding and policy decisions for those institutions.

3. I don't like that Omar is a Bigamist - she married her brother when she was already married to her husband.

4. I don't like that Omar is guilty of Marriage Fraud by marrying her brother.

5. I don't like that Omar is guilty of Incest by Marrying Her Brother.

6. I don't like that Omar is guilty of Immigration Fraud by marrying her brother so he could live in the US.

There are also allegations that Omar committed perjury when she said in her 2017 divorce filing that she’d had no contact with Elmi since June of 2011.

These claims are based on unverified photos that appear on conservative news sites. The allegations are difficult to verify or disprove because Omar has declined to directly address the issue and the man who some have alleged is her ex-husband has not responded to AP’s requests for comment.

In her divorce papers, Omar said in 2017 that she hadn’t had contact with Elmi since June 2011, that she believed he was in London, and that she didn’t know how to reach him. But conservative bloggers have said a man also named Ahmed Elmi was photographed at an event with Omar in London years after she claimed there was no contact.

That man told Alpha News, a right-leaning online news site, in 2016 that he was the man in group pictures with Omar, but he denied knowing her and said he had never been married. He has not responded to inquiries from AP by phone, email or over social media.

While this could be a case of mistaken identity, there are several coincidences that suggest the possibility of a connection between Omar and the man who claimed he doesn’t know her.

Among them, his LinkedIn account says he went to North Dakota State University: Elmi and Omar also went to North Dakota State University, according to university records. His LinkedIn account lists art as a major, which the university says Elmi also studied.

According to North Dakota State University records, Elmi attended the school from August 2010 through May of 2012. The man who spoke with Alpha News gave the website a different birthdate and year of attendance. The university had no record of anyone with the name and birthdate given to Alpha News, and it had no record of anyone with his name attending school in 2005, the year he provided to Alpha News.

In addition, his Instagram account contains pictures of Minneapolis scenes that are dated in 2012; Elmi, Omar’s ex-husband, lived in Minneapolis in 2012, according to court records that show he was evicted from an apartment that year.

More Evidence of Omar Committing Perjury -

State Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) Swore to Apparent Falsehoods in Court — While Divorcing Her Alleged Brother

Minnesota state Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-60 is the presumed frontrunner for the MN-5 House seat being vacated by Rep. Keith Ellison (D). The seat is safely Democratic; Hollywood progressives, local party officials, and Minnesota media have all but scheduled the August 14 primary as her coronation. Their enthusiasm is rooted in Omar's identity: she is a photogenic, hijab-wearing Muslim who entered the United States as a Somali child refugee.

Likely because of this, however, Omar's media and party supporters have been aggressively uninterested in a disturbing allegation about Omar with legal ramifications: that in 2009, she seems to have married her brother. That allegation has been public for nearly two years without Omar addressing its specific foundations.

Newly uncovered evidence -- exclusively published below -- adds another allegation: Ilhan Omar has since signed off on apparent falsehoods, under penalty of perjury, during her 2017 divorce from the man in question: Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.

New Evidence, New Allegations

Minnesota law deems court records of divorce proceedings to be available to the public. In 2017, several months after Omar's marriage history briefly created a national news item, Omar quietly petitioned family court for a default divorce, claiming she could not locate Elmi.

The above document depicts Omar, under penalty of perjury, attesting to the court that she has not had contact with her legal husband since June 2011.

To those familiar with the 2016 coverage of this story, this claim should strike as a jaw-dropper. (Ed. note: scroll down below for a summary of the Ilhan Omar backstory.)

To reference just one example, the three immediately following photos were pivotal elements of the 2016 coverage. These pictures first appeared on Ilhan Omar's personal Instagram account in 2014 (her username at the time was "hameey", and depict Ilhan visiting Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in London that year.

In contrast to Omar's attestation of zero contact since 2011, two of Omar's three self-published photos here actually appear to show physical contact some three years later:

There are many other examples of consistent social media communication -- comments, likes -- between the two since June 2011.

When confronted with the above pictures in 2016, UK resident Ahmed N. Elmi admitted to a reporter that he was indeed the scarved man in the three pictures. However, he also claimed to not know the name of the woman in the colorful head covering adjacent to him, and that she certainly was not his legal wife. He then gave the reporter a different birthdate for himself than the April 4, 1985, birthdate given for Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in Omar's divorce petition.

That's Elmi himself, holding baby Ilwad at the hospital. She was born the day before to his legal wife, Ilhan Omar. Who attested in court that she has had zero contact with Ahmed Elmi since before Ilwad was conceived, let alone born.

The silver lining for Elmi here is that he still likely has little reason to fear a process server greeting him in London with a paternity test.

Because he clearly calls his wife's child ... a niece?

For Rep. Ilhan Omar, everything about this Instagram post is a Code Red, and she's up for election in six days. PJ Media has emailed her campaign seeking comment multiple times since August 3, but has not yet received a response.

Catch Up

(For those unfamiliar with the 2016 genesis of the Ilhan Omar saga, read further for a summary of the backstory.)

In 2016, two Minnesota journalists -- Scott Johnson of Powerline and Preya Samsundar of AlphaNewsMN -- researched an anonymous tip about Ilhan Omar. The tipster had presented evidence that Omar married her brother in 2009, and was still legally his wife as of 2016. The tipster had also asserted that Omar may have done it to help her brother commit immigration fraud. Further, the tipster had noted that Omar has been "culturally" married to, and living with, a second man since 2002 -- the father of her three children.

Simple online searches of public civil records and social media immediately proved parts of the story to be true.

Samsundar discovered additional compelling evidence, and even managed to get in touch with the apparent husband/brother, who currently lives in London. He proceeded to talk himself into a pickle trying to answer Samsundar’s questions.

For doing their jobs admirably, Johnson and Samsundar were subsequently labeled "Islamophobes" and bigots. Omar's own representatives lashed out with such comments.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune and “alternative weekly” City Pages -- though they certainly “followed up” on the story -- offered minimal effort beyond publishing official comments from Omar's campaign. After first blaming anti-Muslim bigotry, Omar changed tactics by offering an eyebrow-raising statement that left specific evidence and accusations unaddressed.

It worked. Virtually all media outlets that covered the allegations seemed content with Omar's official statement. She was soon sworn in -- the first Muslim Somali to be elected to a U.S. state legislature. That achievement landed her the cover of Time.

Now Omar is pursuing an open federal seat, and a growing list of Democrats, including Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton (D), have endorsed this self-described "intersectional feminist." The district party officially endorsed Omar at a hastily assembled convention; she took 68% of the delegates' votes.

Perhaps most pivotally, Omar received a timely boost from the entertainment industry in the weeks and months before Ellison even announced he would not run again.

Time for Ilhan, a documentary about Omar's 2016 election win, just happened to hit the local festival circuit in April. Per the Hollywood Reporter's fawning review, the film blesses Omar and her identity in a manner reminiscent of the introduction given a certain Illinois state senator in the George W. Bush era:

At the beginning of Norah Shapiro's documentary about Ilhan Omar's political run we're informed that no one of Somali descent has ever been elected to legislative office in the United States. By the end of this inspiring film, that fact has (spoiler alert) been movingly put to rest. Time for Ilhan feels like manna from heaven for liberals and progressives who have been in a state of despair since the last presidential election.

As the campaign grinds on, an exhausted Ilhan sighs, "It's a lot, trying to change the world."

In late May, Ilhan stunned for a few photogenic seconds in a new music video celebrating progressive feminism from pop band Maroon 5. Ellen Degeneres was featured too, and Jennifer Lopez, and Sarah Silverman.

Just a week later -- and just hours before the filing deadline for the MN CD-5 ballot -- Keith Ellison announced he would leave Congress to run for MN attorney general. Sudden celebrity Ilhan Omar soon arrived, and filed.

Oddly, it was scheduled for Fathers' Day, when most of America has other commitments. Ilhan said nothing of note about it, but other candidates complained about the timing, and questioned the need for an endorsement convention at all. Notably, the endorsement convention delegates had all been chosen when Ellison was still the expected candidate.

Such media/Democratic symbiosis keeps burning the modern Left -- it's "how they got Trump." It's easy to understand the disillusioned Midwest former Obama voters, and the rage against "fake news," amidst such failure.

In this instance, Minnesota's current governor and 25-plus Democratic elected officials have endorsed a candidate seemingly without bothering to view her publicly available court records from just the past year.
