Two guys wearing ski masks 'recognized' him and said, “Aren’t you that faggot ‘Empire’ n*gger?” They beat him up, tied a noose around his neck and poured bleach on him. As they departed, they shouted, "This is MAGA Country."

Jussie was on the phone with his manager at the same time he was getting beat up, noose tied around his neck and bleach poured on him.

If you believe this, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you.

Here we go again. If you think the manure-spreaders of sensationalism who masquerade as ethical practitioners of journalism learned anything from last week's MAGA-bashing Covington Catholic High School hoax, I have three words for you:

Ha, ha, ha.

On Tuesday morning, uncorroborated claims by actor Jussie Smollett that he was the victim of a "brutal" hate crime by Trump supporters in Chicago went viral across social media. Entertainment rag TMZ.com first splashed "exclusive" headlines that the "Empire" cast member was "beaten by MAGA backers" in a "homophobic attack" at around 2 a.m. in Chicago. If you have no idea what "Empire" is or who Smollett is, join the club. The TV star is apparently a vocal critic of Trump and attacked "45 and all his white hooded cohorts" on Instagram last week.

But I digress.

Within minutes, the gossip site's squib on the TV star's alleged victimization trended on Twitter and rocketed up to USA Today, Variety, CBS, CNN and The New York Times. The Fishwrap of Record breathlessly reported lurid details of two people who "wrapped rope around his neck," which multiple outlets characterized as a "noose." A police statement providing incident background stated that "the offenders began to batter the victim with their hands about the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," according to Smollett. Multiple websites reported that the substance was bleach.

This is truly horrible, if true. But color me cautious and skeptical. TMZ initially reported that Smollett had exited a Subway chain restaurant near his luxury apartment when accosted by the racist, homophobic assailants, who allegedly recognized him from his work on "Empire." Allegedly, Smollett received a hate mail with the word "MAGA" on it addressed to him and sent to his studio in Chicago last week. If this was a premeditated attack, the FBI should get to the bottom of it.

But oddities and discrepancies abound:

TMZ quoted one of the "MAGA country" attackers who allegedly hurled epithets at Smollett: "Aren't you that f——t 'Empire' n——-?"

Question: How many racist homophobic menaces wander around the upscale Streeterville neighborhood of liberal Chicago at 2 a.m. carrying rope and bleach, yelling about "MAGA country"?

Question: How many racist homophobic menaces have ever heard of "Empire," could recognize Jussie Smollett, or know or care anything about his sexuality?

Despite TMZ's claim that Smollett had the "hell beat outta him" and attackers "broke his ribs" plus subjected him to a chemical attack, an ambulance was not called and he instead "self-transported" to the hospital. CWB Chicago, a local public safety watchdog site, reported on police dispatch records documenting that Smollett's friend "Frank" refused EMS services for Smollett; no mention of bleach was made; "no or minor injury" was observed; and "officers never sent a 'flash; message with offender descriptions to field units."

Weird.

Another assertion not included in the CPD's initial press release on the incident: Any mention of "MAGA supporters" or any mention of the race of the alleged assailants. Police clarified that they had not received any official information backing TMZ reporter Charles Latibeaudiere's claim, which he attributed to sources close to Smollett, that the alleged attackers shouted, "This is MAGA country."

Nor had the police corroborated that the attackers were white, since Smollett had told them their faces and hands were both covered. After launching a search for surveillance video and potential witnesses, the police department reported late Tuesday that "thus far we have not found anything to be able to put out a description."

I was told that public records requests for the incident report may take "weeks" to be approved. I was also told the Chicago police remain in charge of investigating the alleged incident, while the FBI probe of the alleged hate mail remains separate

CPD's public information office also told me late Tuesday that when police responded to the 911 call regarding the incident, Smollett gave them no details about where it occurred or what the attackers looked like. None. They were reportedly on scene for an hour with Smollett. When I asked again how the claims about white "MAGA attackers" were disseminated in the press, the PIO replied:

"We have no idea where that came from."

Minutes after I hung up the phone with her, a local Chicago reporter tweeted that Smollett did mention the "MAGA" angle in a "follow-up, supplemental interview." Which is it?

Despite all the holes, contradictions and unanswered questions, the MAGA hate crime narrative has already calcified. (Sound familiar?) By 5 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, a search for "MAGA" and "Smollett" on Google yielded 3,520,000 results. And TMZ ended its day of social justice pot-stirring with the Rev. Al Sharpton calling for President Donald Trump to "denounce Jussie Smollett's MAGA attackers" who have yet to be identified.

Classic manufactured "news:" Report on an uncorroborated hate crime. Plant unverified details. Repeatedly blame white male Trump supporters. Stoke Hollywood outrage. Enlist the godfather of hate crime hoaxes to call on the president to denounce phantom attackers. Reap clicks and publicity. Indict all skeptics as racists and haters. Repeat.

A Fifth of Hate Crimes Reported Done in Trump's Name, Researchers Say
Despite the Trump administration's adamance that there's no connection between the advance of anti-LGBT policies and a recent onslaught of attacks against gay Americans, recent data on hate crimes in the US may indicate otherwise.



Robert Richard Brice Kohler was walking his dog along leafy Vermont Avenue in Washington D.C. when he heard someone yell from behind, "Hey Snowflake! This is what a Trump America looks like, faggot!" Before he could turn completely around, four men had begun punching and throwing objects at him. Two of them wore hats that read, "Make America Great Again."

Kohler's assault comes amid a number of high-profile anti-gay attacks since Donald Trump's election. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, a man shot pellets into a gay community center after telling the person at the front desk, "I wish you would all die." In Brooklyn, an attacker reportedly hurled anti-gay slurs and slashed two men with a knife inside a Crown Fried Chicken. A New York drag queen club owner was reportedly beat up in the early morning in San Diego for being gay; he later recorded a video on Facebook blaming the hateful atmosphere Trump had created for the attack. In Key West, two gay men were allegedly attacked while riding their bikes by a gay basher who proclaimed, "You live in Trump country now."

Confronted by a reporter last week about the rash of attacks on the LGBT community, White House press secretary played down any links between Trump's rhetoric and gay bashings. "I think one of the points that we've made in previous statements is that this is not the way that we as Americans solve our differences," he said. When pressed by the reporter to clarify if he thought Trump's withdrawal of federal protections for transgender students was emboldening bigots, Spicer was incredulous. "I don't believe there is any connection between — I think that would be a stretch, to say the least."


In fact, past research has indicated that there may be a correlation between policies that restrict protections to LGBT communities and the mental and physical wellbeing of said communities. Studies have shown that LGB people who live in areas with high levels of anti-LGBT prejudice die twelve years earlier than peers in other communities. Another study found that LGB people living in states without anti-discrimination protections are five times more likely than those in other states to have two or more mental disorders.

While Trump hasn't directly shown animosity towards LGBT people in his speeches, he's surrounded himself with people who hold anti-gay views: Vice President Mike Pence wanted to use HIV / AIDS money to fund conversion therapy and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos helped the anti-gay Family Research Council establish its first Washington office. Their appointments arguably send a dog whistle to bigoted Trump supporters that LGBT people can be harassed with impunity.


Since November, groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and Propublica have been working together to create a comprehensive database of hate crime incidents across the country. So far, they have recorded 1400 incidents, according to Heidi Beirich, who leads the SPLC's Intelligence Project. "From our perspective it certainly looks like there have been more hate crimes since the election," she told Broadly. "About a fifth of the attacks we've collected were done in Trump's name."

Gregory Herek, a professor of Social Psychology at the University of Irvine and expert on anti-gay violence, believes perpetrators of these kinds of attacks are looking to their peers for approval or permission — to the extent that they're thinking about their actions at all.

"A lot of of the time, what happens is impulsive behavior, but I think these attacks also occur against a societal backdrop that includes a certain acceptance or tolerance for various expressions of prejudice and hostility towards different groups, and that increases a sense of permission that people feel they have," he said.

Attempting to ascertain whether hate crimes against gay people are actually increasing under Trump, however, is a tricky endeavor. While crimes based on sexual orientation are compiled by the FBI, they're woefully under-reported; every year since the agency began tracking them in 1996, more than 80 percent of jurisdictions have reported "zero" hate crimes. In 2015, less than 12 percent of participating law enforcement agencies reported hate crimes at all, with the overwhelming majority of participating jurisdictions — 88.4 percent — failing to report a single incident.


Part of the problem is that hate crime legislation differs by state; in sixteen states, hate crime laws don't cover sexual orientation or gender identity while four states (Wyoming, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Indiana), don't have any hate crime laws on the books.

Even taking into account the lack of reporting standards, though, anti-LGBT incidents compiled by the FBI were shockingly high before Trump had even announced his candidacy. In 2015, law enforcement agencies reported 1,219 hate crimes against gays and lesbians and 118 hate crimes against those who were trans and gender nonconforming. That makes LGBT people more likely to be targeted for hate crimes than any other minority group.

Because of this, Herek believes focusing purely on whether attacks are increasing misses the bigger picture. "Somehow, that implies that this is only a problem so long as it's always getting worse, as if it isn't bad enough as it is," he said.

Herek has been studying gay bashings since the 1980s, when they were considered routine. "There wasn't a lot of outrage, and in the gay community, there wasn't even a sense that something could be done about it." It wasn't until the mid-80s that the National Gay Task Force (now the National LGBTQ Task Force) began compiling statistics across the country on anti-gay violence.

"Thirty years ago, people were beating up gay people, screaming, 'They're spreading AIDS!' while, ironically, getting blood all over themselves," he said. "It's hard to know whether those larger events in the culture were the cause of violence or if they were just being used as justification for something that would have happened regardless."

He noted that bigots who beat gay people on the street aren't typically newshounds or policy buffs, though they are broadly aware of what kinds of actions their peers would endorse.

"In the past, there have been crimes where the perpetrators made some reference to larger events going on, like gay marriage," he said. "But this is the first I've heard of anyone invoking the name of the president."

As more information about the alleged hate-crime investigation began circulating on Wednesday evening, it showed that once again journalists, politicians and celebrities might have run too hard and too soon with another unfounded allegation. Much like in "The Truth About The Lincoln Memorial Incident," accurate reporting can come only with time, but that didn't stop media figureheads from lambasting all Trump-supporters, again.

Smollett, an actor on a television show, Empire, claimed he was attacked during the early hours on Monday by two people he could not give descriptions of, not even as to their sex. He claimed they hurled racial and homophobic insults as they assaulted him and then proceeded to pour an "unknown liquid" on him before wrapping a thin rope around his neck.

Smollett then told police he went to his friend's apartment with the rope still around his neck and continued to wear it until police were dispatched 45 minutes later. Upon their arrival, Smollett asked them to turn off their body camera recordings. During the initial interview, no mention was made indicating that the attackers were Trump-supporters but TMZ ran the headline "Attackers Shouted 'MAGA Country'" anyway. When police were asked to verify this, they could not, and so they followed up with Smollett, where he then stated that the perpetrators did yell the confusing sentiment.

Before waiting for more information, Kamala Harris, who had an established relationship with the actor, and Cory Booker took to Twitter, where they both offered support to the actor as well as phrasing his attack as a "modern-day lynching." Many accused the two senators of using the incident to promote their anti-lynching legislation despite the fact that no lynching occurred, even if all of Smollett's accusations are true.

More celebrities joined in, and articles began circulating that it was a "racially charged hate crime" even though the sexes and races of the perpetrators were not known to police or Smollett.

Wednesday evening, the AP released a statement from the Chicago police that said, "We haven't seen anybody, at this point, matching the description he gave. Nobody looks menacing, and we didn't find a container anywhere," a reference to a container for the liquid that the actor said was thrown at him. This was after law enforcement reviewed hundreds of hours of surveillance recordings from dozens of businesses in the area where Smollett claimed that the attack happened. A city with almost 20,000 public cameras, indicative of an Orwellian dystopia, had captured no physical evidence that a crime had occurred.

Police later Wednesday night released two photos of "persons of interest" but did not imply that they were suspects of the attack. The grainy images showed a pair walking down a street with no distinguishing features or holding any objects, nor was Smollett in the frames. Chicago police issued the "community alert" since the pair in the video stills could not be identified and there had been an implication of a hate crime. They also reiterated that they still had no proof that confirmed Smollett's story.

The incident sparked recollection of many alleged hate crimes that too quickly prompted social media cries of racism and anti-Trump rhetoric only to be later proved as hoaxes. Breitbart keeps a running tab of over 100 hate crime hoaxes since President Trump's election. Smollett's suspected attack is eerily similar to one from Massachusetts where a 20-year-old man claimed he was the victim of an assault by two racists who called out "Trump country now" during the attack. After police interviewed the "victim," he admitted that he had made the story up to "raise awareness" of issues in the country.

It is still too early to tell whether Jussie Smollett's claims of victimhood are true, false, or somewhere in the exaggerated middle, but that only means that it was too early for outlets like GQ and TMZ to be running stories that place blame at the feet of the president and his supporters for a crime they can't be sure occurred.

There is a natural emotional response to tragic stories, but increasingly, people have been using them to reinforce pigeonholes that they hold on to for completely unrelated reasons – like self-proclaimed activist Alyssa Milano doubling-down on her hate toward the Covington kids, even after video evidence exonerated them, by claiming that "MAGA hats are the new white hoods of the KKK."

Wrath is the sin that fuels anti-Trumpers' feeling of perverse vindication when they hear that something terrible has happened and it coincides with their own philosophies. Then a complete lack of humility is present when it turns out to not be as bad as they first thought or even hoped. Stepping on someone else's sad story as a soapbox to virtue-signal is distasteful. To do so without even confirming the story's authenticity is ignorance. Being unable to re-evaluate when the story is proven false is dangerous.

So unoriginal. But I think the biggest red flags that it's a hoax are -

The MAGA guys just happened to be walking around carrying a rope and a container of bleach with them. (When bleach freezes at about 17 degrees)

Two white MAGA guys recognized him all bundled up from a TV show about blacks that nobody watches.

Two MAGA guys just happened to be out at the same time at the same place at 2:00 am in -12 degree weather.

Smollett's Subway Sandwich was intact when he returned to the lobby of his building. LOL

Surveillance cameras were on him totally from the time he left Subway until he left the lobby of his building to go up to his apartment, except for a 60-second interval and that makes it impossible for this crime to have happened. (Like what are the chances this happened at a specific 60-second time interval in which there was no surveillance camera)

Come on!

The only people who believe this hoax is real are the same Libs who still insist that Nick Sandmann and the Covington Boys were at fault and Nathan Phillips and the Black Israelites are the victims.

On January 29, TMZ reported that Smollett was attacked by two men in ski masks who allegedly put him in a noose while spewing racist and homophobic slurs. According to TMZ, the attackers also reportedly yelled, “This is MAGA country” during the assault. The Chicago Police Department originally denied the “MAGA country” remark, but later said Smollett did tell them about the comment in a follow-up interview.

Anti-queer violence has been rising considerably, and the most recent FBI data shows that Black people are the most frequent victims of hate crimes. However, soon after TMZ’s initial report of Smollett’s attack, some right-wing media figures immediately started pushing that it was a hoax, before any further details were known. Far-right social media accounts and message boards also claimed that the “MAGA country” remark never happened or that the entire attack was a hoax, including Reddit’s r/The_Donald subreddit and 4chan’s “politically incorrect” message board /pol/.

During the morning and early afternoon of January 30, Twitter users trying to search for Smollett’s name were met with suggested results like “smollett hoax,” “smollett fake,” “smollett fake news,” and “smollett lying.”

The Curious Case of Jussie Smollett

The case of the openly gay television actor who has alleged that he was beaten up by racist homophobic Trump fans late Monday/early Tuesday at 2 a.m. grows more curious by the hour. Three days later, it’s not clear that an attack took place. And Jussie Smollett’s behavior has been odd.

On Tuesday, in response to a Joe Biden tweet expressing outrage over the alleged hate-crime assault on Smollett, longtime Chicago TV reporter Rafer Weigel of Fox 32 wrote: “Might be best to tone down the outrage on the #JussieSmollett story until more evidence comes in to suggest it actually happened.” Later the reporter added: “To be clear. I am not accusing [Smollett] of lying. I’m saying #ChicagoPD and Chicago FBI have been working round the clock & have found nothing to support it. And given the extremity of his claims and where they allegedly took place it has them skeptical.”

On Wednesday, police revealed that they have looked at hundreds of hours of surveillance video recorded around the area (near 300 E. North Lower Water Street) where Smollett says the attack took place. Police called it a “very high density” area for surveillance cameras, but they still have found no evidence that any assault took place. There are no witnesses and nothing like the assault described appears on any of the videos. What they have released are low-quality images of two “persons of interest” who crossed paths with Smollett and could have been witnesses or bystanders or even perpetrators.

TMZ led the way on the story Tuesday with claims that “sources directly connected to” the actor said that as Smollett was walking home from a Subway sandwich shop, someone yelled, “Aren’t you that faggot Empire n*****?’”

TMZ’s sources added that the two attackers were both white and wearing ski masks. They allegedly beat him so badly they broke one of his ribs, and also put a rope around his neck, yelled racist and homophobic slurs, poured bleach on him, “and as they left they yelled, ‘This is MAGA country.’” A crudely lettered note sent to Fox’s Chicago studios last week made a death threat and an anti-gay slur against Smollett, but the actor turned down Fox’s offer to provide him with a round-the-clock security detail, according to TMZ.

Smollett did not initially mention the MAGA detail to police, according to a department spokesman. He waited until a subsequent interview with police later in the day on Tuesday to inform them of this. In addition, police said that Smollett couldn’t identify the race of his attackers because their faces were concealed and didn’t know what liquid was poured on him.

There is one possible piece of corroboration for Smollett’s story: He and his manager both say the two were talking on Smollett’s phone when the attack happened. The manager says he heard at least some of the attack, including the MAGA remark and the slurs. Police would like to examine Smollett’s phone to find out more. But they say he won’t give it to them.

There is of course ample evidence of animosity between the actor and Donald Trump’s side, but so far all of the expressions of hatred are coming from Smollett. This is the kind of remark Smollett makes about the president on Twitter:

Surveillance video shows Smollett walking into an apartment building and past security guards without stopping to ask them for help or to tell them he had just been subjected to a vicious assault and hate crime. In this video, he was wearing a rope around his neck “like a necktie but shaped like a noose,” according to a police spokesman. At some point the police were contacted and Smollett was interviewed in a friend’s apartment at 2:42 a.m. He asked police to turn off their body cameras so the encounter would not be recorded. At this point, he was still wearing the rope around his neck, police said.

So let’s recap what Smollett says happened, together with what Chicago reporters have heard from police. Two men recognized a gay black actor from a TV show at 2 a.m. on a Chicago street during an extreme cold snap while he was on his phone. Instead of taking the phone from him, they began to shout slurs at him. The assailants happened to have a rope and an unknown liquid with them. They put a rope around his neck, but instead of strangling him with it, they just left it there and then ran away. Instead of calling the police immediately on the phone, Smollett walked into an apartment building and past security, without informing anyone about the alleged assault, and he kept the rope around his neck for some three-quarters of an hour. He neglected to tell the police about the MAGA remark in this first interview, revealing it only later in a subsequent interview. He took himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital that morning and was released later in the morning. TMZ posted a picture of Smollett with a small scratch or cut beneath his right eye.

A week earlier, on Jan. 22, witnesses told police a postal worker dropped off a letter at the studio where the show “Empire” is filmed. It was postmarked in southwest suburban Bedford Park on Jan. 18, and bore two American flag stamps. The letters MAGA were written, also in red ink, in the upper-left corner of the envelope.

The 'two persons of interest' were on the video between 1:30 and 1:45. They were walking away from the supposed 'crime scene'. The alleged crime took place - after Jussie Smollett walked out of the Subway - after 2:00.

Police released that photo and reported they were interested in those two guys because they were and are under pressure to find the perpetrator of this Fake Hate Crime/Hate Hoax instigated by Jussie Smollett because Black, Gay, Celebrity...

Also, the two guys walking away were 'two bums', so yeah...

Behind the Scenes, It’s Clear Chicago Media and Police Doubt Jussie Smollett’s Story

I can’t recall a large crime story where there was a bigger gap between what the police and media are saying publicly, and what they expressing behind the scenes, than the saga involving the recent alleged hate crime against actor Jussie Smollett. Similarly, there may not be a story where you can tell more by what has not happened, in comparison to what actually has occurred.

The current public stance of the Chicago police is that earlier this month, at 2 a.m. on a very cold Chicago night, Smollett was the victim of what appears to be a heinous hate crime where he was physically attacked by two men, and humiliated due to his race, homosexuality, and possibly his opposition to President Donald Trump. The Chicago media, in official reports, has largely treated that narrative as legitimate, while chronicling the complete lack of suspects and corroborating evidence as more of a frustration than any indication that something else might be going on here.

Behind the scenes, however, based on conversations I have had with multiple people covering the story, there is a radically different take on what really did happen to Smollett. In short, there is near unanimity among police sources that Smollett’s story is very likely not true. And that even the media outlets still regurgitating the current “party line” don’t really believe it.

In my experience, most people are very bad at reading the tea leaves in these types of situations, and it often leads to very inaccurate interpretations of what is really going on. This case has several important elements which, if you know what to look for, make evaluating the actions of the police and news media really rather easy.

The first thing you need to understand about this situation is that, because of Smollett’s persona and the nature of his allegation, no one in law enforcement or the news media wants any part of publicly questioning his story. Everyone knows that if they make any sort of negative implication against a black, gay, liberal, celebrity, victim of a horrible hate crime, that they will be roundly and severely attacked, regardless of whether they turn out to be correct.

As a conservative, I look at this as his Political Correctness Force Field. Smollett’s protection here is literally about as strong as it gets, especially in Chicago, a city that has a large black population and is extremely liberal.

So, in this hyper-sensitive media environment, any sort of deviation from the accepted storyline by the police or the news media, much like if your seven-year-old kid is showing subtle signs they no longer believe in Santa Claus, must be given exponentially greater significance than it normally would. Here, both the police and news media in Chicago have provided plenty of those types of veiled indications, both publicly and privately.

Among other things, the police have made it very clear they have not yet found any proof of an attack, despite having almost all of Smollett’s movements on surveillance video. They have disclosed that Smollett would not give over his cell phone to verify his timeline of events. They even published photos of “persons of interest” that they had to know were going to be universally mocked for being obviously irrelevant.

In my view, none of those important revelations would have been made public in the way that they were, unless there was extreme suspicion within the police force that Smollett’s story was not fully accurate.

By extension, media figures would not be being told by their police sources, as I have been told is currently happening both routinely and with vigor, that the authorities are acting on the assumption that they will never find any evidence to fully substantiate Smollett’s story. This isn’t just happening via idle speculation either, the police are doing so with great specificity, even including an alternative theory for what really happened (current attempts to find the origin of the rope found around Smollett’s neck long after the event was over are believed to be the most likely game-changer, if there ever is one in this case).

As for the Chicago media, a couple of local television reporters are apparently using Twitter as a confessional for information about the case that their stations currently fear to air. Rob Elgas of the Chicago ABC affiliate, and Rafer Weigel of the Fox station (which carries Smollett’s show Empire) have continually updated the developments, or lack thereof, in a way that paints a much different picture from the one that viewers would see on an actual newscast.

It is very obvious that if one major news outlet in Chicago had the guts to be the first to openly discredit Smollett’s story, the others would soon follow the leader. But because the risk of being wrong in this situation (see Smollett’s PC Force Field), there is just no incentive to take that dive until and unless the police finally make a definitive statement.

I have written previously about my skepticism about the case, and speculated that this story would quickly disappear because there is no way it would get conclusively solved, and no one in authority will have any appetite for the perils of debunking a story from someone like Smollett. However, Weigel tweeted out some rather candid thoughts yesterday which gave me slight hope that maybe we will actually get to the truth of this matter (though, if that truth is indeed as those closest to the story suspect that it is, the news cycle created by that shocking disclosure will probably be exceedingly short).

CHICAGO — Nearly two weeks after “Empire” star Jussie Smollett claimed he was the victim of a racist, homophobic attack, cops have yet to identify any suspects — and some people in his tony Chicago neighborhood are growing skeptical.

“I don’t believe it happened the way he said it did,” said Agin Muhammad, who lives in the same swank high-rise near the Navy Pier as Smollett.

“I’ve been in this neighborhood five years. I don’t believe it, not around here … Half the people are gay and the other half are black.”

A patron at Lizzie McNeill’s Irish Pub, about a block from the scene of the alleged Jan. 29 incident, said Smollett’s story “doesn’t really make sense.”

“It’s a lie, because Chicago is the most liberal city around,” said the man, who wouldn’t give his name. “They have cameras everywhere … Why can’t they find the attack?”

Cops have said they found plenty of surveillance video, but none that captured the incident.

Meanwhile, Chicago police said Sunday that Smollett has yet to turn over data from his cellphone to verify that he was on the phone with his music manager, Brandon Moore, when he was allegedly attacked.

Moore has said he heard Smollett’s assailants shout a “racial slur” and the words “MAGA country,” an apparent reference to President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

“We have no reason to doubt the statements, but for a criminal investigation, we need to independently confirm the phone records,” Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

“We offered to take the phone to download the data and he expressed he couldn’t be without his phone for several hours.”

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson has said that Smollett, 36, was being treated as a crime victim, but would be held accountable if cops learn he filed a false report.

Smollett told cops he was confronted by two men, one wearing a black mask, who hurled gay and racist epithets at him, calling him “’Empire’ f—-t n—-r” while he was walking home shortly before 2 a.m.

The assailants allegedly punched Smollett in the face, doused him with a liquid — believed to be bleach — and tied a rope around his neck in an underpass between the Sheraton and Loews Chicago hotels.

Earlier all the news sources reported that Jussie Smollett and the two guys staged the attack, but now they're walking back and saying it's 'unconfirmed'. But it's a new twist on just plain Jussie making up the whole 'racist hate crime'.

CHICAGO -- Chicago police confirmed Thursday that detectives are talking to two persons of interest in connection with the alleged attack on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett.

Multiple sources have told ABC7 Eyewitness News that police are investigating whether Smollett and the two men staged the attack allegedly because Smollett was being written off of "Empire."

A source familiar with the investigation told the ABC7 I-Team that Smollett failed to appear for an interview with detectives earlier Thursday, but has since spoken with police.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson contacted ABC7 to say they are continuing to treat Smollett as a victim and the investigation remains ongoing.

Chicago police told ABC News, "Police are investigating whether the two individuals committed the attack - or whether the attack happened at all."

Smollett released a statement Thursday evening, saying, "Today Jussie did answer routine followup questions for Chicago Police Department and continues to cooperate."

Smollett's representatives said he is not being written off "Empire."

Twentieth Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment released a statement saying, "The idea that Jussie Smollett has been, or would be, written off of EMPIRE is patently ridiculous. He remains a core player on this very successful series and we continue to stand behind him."

A source briefed on the Smollett investigation confirmed to ABC News that Chicago police are questioning the two persons of interest -- one of whom has appeared on "Empire."

The law enforcement official also told ABC News that the homes of the persons of interest were raided Wednesday night. Police removed shoes, electronic devices and other items they believe could help them determine if the two people played any role in the assault.

Chicago police said they "cannot confirm any of those reports." No charges have been filed.

Earlier, police said the two persons of interest are not suspects and have not been charged. Investigators are only talking with them at this time. The two were picked up Wednesday night at O'Hare International Airport, police said.

Chicago police told ABC News they were tracking the two persons of interest and were aware of who they were "for a while." Chicago police told ABC News they are both cooperating and have been questioned all day.

Smollett said he was attacked around 2 a.m. on Jan. 29 in the 300-block of East North Water Street in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood. He told police two masked men shouted homophobic slurs at him, attacked him, put a rope around his neck and poured a liquid on him that smelled like bleach.

Smollett, 36, is black and openly gay.

Police said they have not found surveillance video that shows the attack. But earlier in the investigation, they did release grainy surveillance images of two possible persons of interest. The photos show two silhouettes on New Street near Illinois Street between 1:30 a.m. and 1:45 a.m. on Jan. 29.

In a statement released Thursday, police said they identified the two people in the surveillance photos and tracked them down using cameras, public transportation records and corroborating info provided by Smollett.

Smollett spoke exclusively with Robin Roberts on "Good Morning America" Thursday. He reflected on what happened to him that morning and what has happened to him since.

"It's the attackers, but also the attacks," he said, adding of those who don't believe his story, "It's not necessarily that you don't believe that this is the truth, you don't even want to see the truth."

Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for Chicago Police Department, said earlier Thursday morning that he watched the GMA interview with CPD Superintendent Eddie Johnson. Guglielmi said Smollett's comments on GMA are consistent with what he's told Chicago police. Unfortunately, police have no solid evidence to arrest anyone at this time.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Investigators believe Jussie Smollett and the non-cooperating witnesses in last month’s alleged attack of the Empire actor “potentially staged the attack,” a source with intimate knowledge of the investigation tells CBS 2 Investigator Brad Edwards.

Chicago police raided the home of two “persons of interest” Wednesday night, a relative of those men says.

Police took bleach, shoes, electronics, receipts and other items from the home.

The men, who are both of Nigerian descent, have appeared as extras on the show and their attorney, Gloria Schmidt, says they do both know Smollett.

“They do know Jussie,” she said. “They have worked with him on Empire. My preliminary investigations show that on set it’s very tight. They’re all very cordial with each other, so they’re baffled why they are people of interest.”

The relative who was home Wednesday night says she heard a loud banging at the door, and that door came crashing down. She says a flood of officers were there saying they had a search warrant.

She says she was patted down by an officer, and police asked her if she knows Smollett. The woman, who is in her 20s, says she was “so scared” and thought she was going to die.

The woman says she was confused, but she did know Smollett was from the show. She says she feels the police picked the two brothers up for questioning because there is a loose connection to Smollett, and the men left for Nigeria the same day of the attack.

The men’s attorney says they were visiting family in Nigeria and were picked up at O’Hare Wednesday night.

Smollett himself was questioned at CPD Area Central Thursday, police confirmed.
