I once saw a show about the homeless in the San Francisco area. I can't remember exactly what city, but it was a super expensive city. They interviewed RV dwellers. They all had good jobs but couldn't afford rent. One woman made 60k a year but her husband/partner was disabled and out of work, so combined they couldn't afford rent.

Tai, I was surprised by how many people who live in tent cities hold a full time job. People should come out of their homes and take a walk around the block, stop in at a tent city and learn something!

Some people would like you to believe The reason people are homeless is that they lack job skills or are lazy or are on drugs
Actually, no. The main reason that so many people in San Francisco, and other cities like Los Angeles, are living on the streets is that the cost of housing over the past two decades has vastly exceeded the amount of income that people earn making minimum-wage jobs or bring in from modest pensions, disability, or welfare.

Before Reagan took office and destroyed the American safety net, and San Francisco decided to be the West Coast Manhattan, you could live on SSI or a low-wage job and still pay rent in this town. When that changed, people who were formerly housed became homeless.

There have always been people in US cities who have mental-health or substance-abuse issues, and there have always been people willing to work but lacking the skills to earn a six-figure income. Until fairly recently, most of those people could keep a roof over their heads. There wasn’t a lot of homelessness in American cities in the 1970s.

Now we have two intersecting economic disasters – the deep cuts in what we can generally call “welfare” payments and the radical dilution of the purchasing power of the minimum wage, and the explosive gentrification of San Francisco. Add in the federal government’s complete abandonment of cities (except when it comes to law enforcement) and it’s no wonder that there are tent cities all over town.

Hey maybe some of the corporate CEo"s could forfit a little of the millions in Bonus

Did you write that? just asking because you live in Vietnam.
Regardless, I agree with the above quote.
I once had a client in her 60s. She said if she ever lost her job, she would kill herself because she couldn't afford rent without a decent paying job. She lived paycheck to paycheck. She couldn't imagine living in a vehicle or a dangerous neighborhood. Imagine someone actively planning suicide if they lost their job because rent can be expensive.

Tai, That is from Zillow Research. I do know some about homless having been there by choice, and my few walks around the block, several years back I rescued
my cousin out of the Pine Barrens in a Homless camp of about two hundred.
Pine Barrens in BrickTown NJ winter HELL! He has mental issues having been run over twice in life by trucks, Mother attemtping to kill him, Long insane story.
My cousin when late teens went to work with his father, Englehard Metals in NJ 29 years, they offerd early out dangled the largest check he ever saw and he took it, Only to get screwed for what he should have got. only a portion of what was to come.
after drug abuse and forclose on his home my sister took him in, sister one day when he was not home went to clean his room found it full of bed bugs and confronted him on that. When she asked him why he never told her, he said bed Bugs no problem just roll over other side and back to sleep, Sister showed him to the door. Next stop Pine Barrens 2 and a half years. I would visit family on east coast then go out to see how Cousin Paul was doing in camp, I offerd Paul to come live in my empty unit in my duplex after a year he excepted. Paul could tell you things from that camp that would make a cold heart cry, I remeber one story A man who immigrated from Poland with Medical training a degree, could not get job because his Poland med training not legal. Funds he saved ran out fast, he was crossing street near camp was hit by car stumbled back to his tent and died, People who fall into the cracks.
not a bum just crap luck. Its very clear people who say drug addicts, bums make up the homless population dont know much, or have an agenda to smear. no real exspouser to the world.
People who spread lies about these folks are evil.
Camp was so sad. I have another best friend 81 years old who told me he has six years of funds left then nothing, said when money gone he will just shoot himself.
The whole time Paul was in camp he could have had SSI but did not know, till advocate for the homeless helped. Home is where you Pitch your tent was the saying at this camp.
So many are experts about the homeless arm chair experts sad.

Hi RHB,
regarding all these people willing to commit suicide rather than be homeless...of course, I disagree to the maximum.

I personally believe that each person has a God-given life span and they will have to live it out either in this life or out of the flesh body, and life still does not end when the life span is over, it just changes form. You don't have to agree with me, but I share it to show I have a level of conviction and conscience.

I ran across a very young man, maybe 18ish, not more than 20 and a thin body. He was drugged out of his mind laying down flat in a narrow alley. His clothes blended into the road and I realized he was going to be run over, if he didn't move to the side. He was not visible unless you stared at him. The average driver would not notice him. I tried telling him to move to the side or he would be hit. He ignored me and didn't move. I told him he would be killed and I had to leave. He still didn't move a muscle. I then realized that he either wanted to be killed or didn't care if he was killed. It was then that I told him about hell and that no matter how bad this life was, hell was worse. No matter how bad his suffering was as a homeless, it was infinitely better than the place he would go if he killed himself. I kept telling him about the suffering in hell and that he could go there, (not saying he would 100% go there but COULD), and finally he told me to stop and he agreed to move to the side of the road and he brushed up tight to a garage where no one would hit him and went back to sleep. About 2 minutes later, a huge massive garbage truck came fast through the alley making no stops. That young man would have been crushed by it.

suicide should not be an option. HUmans should treat other fellow humans better than to allow them to plan suicide.

suicide is wrong. Suicide kills more than the person, But some people become so overwelmed Like a Heart attack and just can see no further. When my 81 year old friend said to me when money gone Bang, It made me feel very sad. I made offers at that point but his pride?
I had another friend who got into trouble with Police, He was a wealthy person who the courts ordered to go to work at gas station, part of punisment for crime he commited. I stop to get gas one day and Ocean came out talking fast upset I talked with him not knowing how upset he really was.
Nexr day girl friend tells me Ocean killed himself, I was never so floored in my life by an action. I still feel like if I listened a little more I should have known he needed help, It still hurts very much today 20 years later his suicide.
We all need to care more and pay attention to peoples who are suffering.
Life is a Miricle, to end before your time just crazed.
