what do u do when you are feeling "blue"?
Posted by: la_veronique ()
Date: April 08, 2007 04:35AM

do u just climb a tree and cry
do u pet an iguana and sigh
do u go sit in a corner and tell your turtle " oh my"?
do u surround yourself with broccoli and say good bye?

or do u stand atop a table and stomp
and travel the four corners of the earth and stink it up with durians
or do u go to your room and close your eyes
and hear the watch hands go tick tock tick tock
while all the canteloupes and watermelon heads are asleep

just wondering
maybe its the weather
making me feel blue
or maybe i just saw that pic of a polar bear frozen on ice
that made me go "boo hoo"

Hi LA Veronique, I cry and go to sleep.Sometimes I take a hot,hot bath for 1 hour and go to sleep. If I can't go to sleep I meditate.I try to go inward and ask myself "what are you feeling? Why?When?Who did this to you and When?" because I think that evryting comes from childhood. All the feelings that he feel, but don't know how to explain....so ask and that will be given to you. Your inner child will tell you why that blue feeling.....So I ask.

thanks cy
that helps a lot
i should take a bath again
usually i just take showers
hot bath does help me to sleep though on the rare occasions in which i have soaked in one

going inward
i actually did just that last night
and it felt good
i had some happy memories from childhood
that i replayed

and they made me feel comforted

some of the toys i used to play with
some of the tiny tot golden books i used to read
and i was so mesmerized by them
stories that people used to tell me

i actually remember just about every 'story" that an adult told me
whether it was a story from a book
a nursery rhyme etc
or something they made up
i never forgot those

i remember making a BIG deal about getting a beach ball
one of those plastic inflatable beach balls
i saw one at the store
i must have been five years old or something close to that

and anyhow
i didn't have much money
some coins in the piggy bank for doing little things
( can't remember what those "little things" were though .. ha ha)

maybe they paid me to be quiet or something
i forget

at any rate
whatever i had in the piggy bank
was not enough
it actually was a piggy bank
it was glass see through
so you could see how many pennies and nickels u ammassed
i don't think there were too many quarters

at any rate,
i forget how
but i had to do a lot of things
and jump through hoops practically
to save up to get that beach ball

and i remember when i finally got it
i felt this incredible sense of accomplishment

no one enjoyed that beach ball more than me

anyhow
i felt very comforted by that thought

or some of the pictures that i used to look at
crazy pictures that they would have in the stationary department
with lots of colors , purple pegasus pink clouds
stuff like that

and i felt more and more comforted
then the feeling of blueness was lifted
and it was replaced by a feeling of peace

it was actually a miracle
i'll have to do that again

my inner child says

"there is always magic
there is always hope
never give up"

my inner child
she's a darn smart girlsmiling smiley

just like her adult counterpart ( ha ha!!!)

I mix in a little red for passion

and then a little gray for wisdom

which results in this gorgeous violet color mood

that is more subdued than red; more cheerful than gray

and more energetic than blue.

That's what I do when I'm blue.

When I'm blue I...

Cuddle up next to my lover-boy,
Take a luxurious, long hot bath,
Create art or music to rekindle my joy,
Or divert from sadness by venting my wrath!

Nice poem!

I write music and hug my dog and exercise and talk to friends (if possible) and work hard and do my best and write run-on sentences....

I look at what made me upset, realize that I don't have to listen to what my mind is telling me. I acknowledge the pain and decide that I don't want to feel this way in similar situations in the future, so I look towards strategies that might make me more successful.. Focusing on the positive, acknowledging that I am not perfect but that I want to continue to grow and become better in every conceivable way, that any experience is just more data to help with that growth.

Also....
As Cy pointed out, a lot of pain seems associated with things that were unique to past negative experiences. For example, maybe you find it annoying when someone smacks their chewing gum really loudly... it could be because in one (or more) bad experiences as a kid, another kid, who was taunting you or something, was chewing gum in such a way. So it might help to remind yourself that chewing gum really loudly doesn't HAVE to cause you pain, and to acknowledge that it currently does, and so on...

Or when someone calls me a name that, inherently, has no meaning, but instead has some arbitrary meaning I have assigned to it.... Some people FLIP OUT just by being called certain words, which in and of itself seems ridiculous, but it is actually pretty understandable if the mind does indeed work in such a way as to log unique elements of past negative experiences (to better insure your survival - any time someone uses a bad word or chews gum your mind sends you a signal that danger is imminent).

This actually does seem pretty reasonable to me, as there have been many reports of war veterans who react to, say, a car engine backfiring, as though they heard a gunshot. Also brings to mind Pavlov's experiments with the dog and the dinner bell...

I feel blue. and I make sure I am feeling the worst I culd feel then something happens, I accept myself. For the real me, and not the me I am trying to be.

Hey Kwan , we should get together and feel happier together.

kwan

i imagine u surrounded by candles
and feeling happy
that's the image that came to mind
and also a happy hunky dude next to ya
and a happy tail wagging dog
hee hee

thomas lantern

i actually feel happy when someone is smacking their gum
it means they have a zest for life
but i agree when u say that some feelings are just primal related
goes way back
good feelings too
i feel better now
just had to get some advice

coconutcream

what do u mean when u say

<<I feel blue. and I make sure I am feeling the worst I culd feel then something happens, I accept myself>>

are u saying that if u feel blue
u just feel it til it goes to its extreme
then u just accept it?

what about the "something happens"?
is that before or after the blue event

Sometimes,

(If it's not in the middle of winter (and that is usually when I feel bluest))
I go into the forest and wander around, watch the river dance, watch the birds soar and swoop and sing. I hunker down and watch the bugs and the slugs. I talk to the cattails and they don't seem to mind. Mostly I just breathe.

It doesn't always solve my woes and perk me right up, but I can't say I have ever once walked in the woods and thought "hmmm...that was a bad idea"!

La Veronique, you are very smart, and your inner child too. Both of you are extremly clever. I loved that you got the ball and felt an amazing sense of accomplishment. Wonderful ! Also what a memory do you have. You remember every story that they told you. Wow !! I believe that you are a writer and have a lot of books already written down. Am I wright? I'm sure that you are an artist.

ThomasLantern,I don't have any problem with chewing gun,but when somebody makes comments that have sarcasms in it I really hate. I remember as a child my aunt always had some comments about me,and always wanted to know what I was doing and today I have my husband (not my) sister-in-law that is the same about me.I can't deal with her,but it's a childhood thing and also she is very difficult. That makes me blue, red and evrything else.I have to take a long bath today and meditate.
I'll imagine a huge green (or any other collor) ball on top of my head. That ball is bright and it starts to get inside of my head and start to massage my brain and also gives a lot of energy to my brain.Than goes to my neck and stops on my heart with a lot of energy. I love it. It makes me fell so good...

Hi Suvine,
We could hang out in the sunshine, make beautiful tropical fruit smoothies and drink our blues away!

I like that you accept yourself when you have the blues and don't try to judge or deny-- that's one of the secrets, I think. Just like clouds, sad moods come and go. If we deny them or feel bad about having them, they may hang around indefinitely.

Cy- I love your accent. I could listen all day. It relaxes me, really, or maybe it is the things you say.

La V- I can't imagine paying you to be quiet. Well, come to think of it maybe when you were five or seven or fourteen but not now.

Coconutcream- I am wondering about what you said as well. If La V's assessment rings true I can relate.

I keep my curtains open everyday. I get outside as much as I can. I fill my days with children, animals and nature. That is maintenance. I try to keep blues at bay. If sometimes a blue becomes persistent I go with it. I ride it to the end and if I get to the point where it feels it needs a push I watch a really, really sad movie. A lot of times I watch a movie about the holocaust. A movie like that does two things it makes my blues bottom out and it reminds me of what is really important in this world, cherishing the beauty.

Hi pakd4fun,
Hey, thank you!-- you just did me a great service with that nice post about my 'honey,' Jonathan. You see, he's blind (has retinitis pigmentosa, the congenital disease), and he doesn't quite know what a magnificent looking guy he is. I just read your message to him and he liked it.

It's so much fun being with a guy who looks like a movie star but has the humility and wisdom of a sage-- best of both worlds. ;-)

My bf was traumatized many times when he was younger and he relives them when something triggers the memories. He struggles so hard with this and often goes in circles with his life. I admire how he struggles because he could just give in to the pain and retaliate somehow, but he manages to make some progress with his life.
Right now he feels the lowest he has since I met him and nothing I can say or do will help. Every little thing sets him off in a different, difficult mood. I was feeling blue about not being able to soothe or help him, but now I feel even bluer because he has pulled away to deal with it alone, so I feel a little marginalized, though I understand why he does it.

When I feel blue, I usually just sit crumpled up feeling the pain, feeling a numb and stuck.

When I can, I process it as honestly as possible, since the truth is the only thing that helps me.

aguadecoco--
Thank you for talking about this. It's a topic that's SO important, as so few people understand it, and traumatized individuals have a very tough time and receive a lot of judgment and criticism in our culture. Bless you for your wisdom, love and understanding. I experienced some traumatic events in my childhood too, and I'm so thankful that my partner is such a warm, wise, and patient man who loves me unconditionally no matter what.
I found enormous help from doing something called Redirecting Self-Therapy-- it really changed my life in terms of dissolving a lot of my emotional pain around the issues of my abuse. It's free and he can do it on his own; it's also very easy to accomplish, and it's not a new age 'blame the victim' type of thing. It's based on neuro-biological principles and the fact that when we're abused, our body produces toxic chemicals and toxic reactive thought patterns that continue to afflict us without some type of intervention.
