"Knowledge can make you old. Compassion is a river of youth that will never run dry. Knowledge can make you tired -- bathe in the water of compassion and you will be refreshed."

- a quote from Thucksey Rinpoche of Ladakh
in A JOURNEY IN LADAKH by Andrew Harvey

I gave it some more thought and actually, I would change it to read:

"Knowledge without compassion can make you old"--

-- because I believe knowledge is tremendously important and enlivening. But cold, stark knowledge without compassion is almost worse than ignorance.

Very prudent Kwan.

I like this one :
"To thyself be faithful: if in thy heart thou strayest not from truth, without prayer of thine the Gods will keep thee whole."

Well, I wouldn't consider someone "knowledgable" if they didn't understand the necessity to be "compassionate", would you, Kwan? smiling smiley

Thomas--
Well no, I wouldn't value their knowledge, but in theory you can have a vast amount of knowledge-- of cold, hard facts and of, say, economics or physics-- and not have a drop of compassion. One can even be a genius and be pathologically cruel and uncaring.

But anyway... ;-p ... how did I get off on this tangent? Oh yes, I was reading this book about Andrew Harvey's journey in Ladakh and I kind of liked the quote.
