Getting the hang of this...
Posted by: Dulset ()
Date: February 03, 2007 12:39PM

Am new to raw food, still learning, it's been a few month with steady progress, a week or two of sliding but without this forum and all the great posts I don't think I would have made it this far this fast.

This week I've had some success by simplifying and eating more, trying to do some mono meals and think I can control the cravings now.

It's starting to look like this-

A large one fuit smoothie (4 oranges or 1/2 pineapple) with lots of celery at 7:30 AM

A canteloupe or a large english cucumber mid morning.

4 large bananas at 1:00 pm (lunch) - this is working well

A large green smoothie, romaine or spinach with papaya or carrot and flaxseeds for after work, (this one I must not miss)

Then I usually eat some hummous with a pita cause I'm not sure what to eat, but last night instead I had a pile of steamed asparagus and a nuked yam and splashed a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar on it, it was good and I was satisfied for the night. Keeping the larder stocked is very important.

Am not 100% raw yet but far better off than my previous SAD vegetarian diet where I never knew what to eat cause I hated TOFU.

A good friend was concerned for me last night, are you sure etc? Sigh...

I hope there won't be an intervention to get me to eat cooked food any time soon lol.

Who'd have thunk I'd be spitting out the words "but I love fruit"??

Taylor,

Most of the time I have to keep it simple, time is always a factor, haven't tried anything like raw hummous yet.

Did make one of those chocolate/avocado pies with the date/nut crust. Not a good idea, it threw me way off track with feeling ill and cravings (I forgot I'm not not good with cocoa). It took me 2 weeks to get back on to "normal".

I did order a dehydrator, will make some crackers, maybe some bread so have to begin the sprouting soon too. Also want to make some raw veggie dog biscuits.

Would love to know what recipes you find good. It's a simple diet really but it's fun to make something from a recipe too once in a while. Please share what turns out well. Am not wild about zucchini as a substitute for pasta. How is that?

I still resort to brown rice once or twice a week with steamed broccolli. But if that's my weakest link I can live with that for now. That meal used to be a healthy meal when I was eating SAD and now it's something I feel guilty about lol!

well-i like the zucchini and i put a raw tomato sauce on it.it was very good.i guess u can like grate up raw yams and use this too for like noodle subtitutes.that pie u made sounds so yummy.I have recipes like that and they make me drool.but i am so scared to try them yet cause i have the overweight problem.I have made the bread.everything,i am finding takes so much preparation.soak, for ever and grind and all-dehydrate for 24 hours.agh!!well-i think u are doing good cause if that is all you resort to-its still pretty good.those are healthy foods.i have this week off and plan to be cooking and exercising.i will love to find out all u uncook.hee hee.taylor

Hi guys!

Thanks for checking in. Got my dehydrator, probably not a good idea.

A nice onion smell wafting through the house, making the "bread" with onions, sunflower and flax seeds. No idea how that will taste this time TOMORROW NIGHT LOL!.

Geez some of those "yummy" recipes have a lot of fat in them! Will not use the onion "bread" for sandwiches, but just as a treat, kind of like my dogs get their treats.

Had pineapple and banana for my breakfast smoothie. Not the best combo, starch and acidic fruit.

Had upset stomach after I ate steamed brocolli for lunch with a lemon garlic cashew olive oil "sauce" blast blended in the Vita mix. No wonder. My stomach must have gone What the hell do we do with this?!!

That will go into my Adult ADD "DON'T MAKE THIS AGAIN" recipe book.

Later the bananas didn't sit well either.
Worried about getting enough calories, still hearing noises from friends and family about not eating enough so I made some brown rice because I don't want to lose any more weight than I have to. Felt dizzy and guilty after I ate that.

This too will pass...

This would be so much easier if I needed to lose weight. Tori and Taylor you are lucky! Losing weight is a great motivator. I can't miss any meals on this diet.

Told my sister earlier "I'M the normal one, YOU are overweight. Yeah, she said, you're probably right."

Wednesday I fell hard on my behind, crash! on the ice in the park while running with my dogs. There is ice everywhere covered in a fine layer of snow. Broke the fall with my wrist. So at least now the aching wrist is taking my mind off the sore shoulder.

Was the only one that turned up for Yoga class yesterday and there was no downward dogging because of the wrist but Aarti the teacher showed me more micro yoga instead. Among other things I learned how to breathe with my epiglotis half shut.

Gotta buy more oranges tomorrow. And celery.

Oh..very interesting..love to hear about other peoples raw food experiences..hehehe..cashews clean me out when I eat them..and I do eat them..'cause I love them.

I've been making smoothies everyday recently..I love frozen or fresh berries (raspberries my fav.) banana, whole mango, and a little bit of juice or water to get it thinner. It's very yummy.

I used to eat pineapple all the time when I first went raw..but now even when I'm not high raw..it's a treat because it's very sweet to me.

I still luvvvvvv watermelon though!

Love,
Prism

Hi there Dulset you sound like you are really trying and doing a good job...i don't think that the weight loss makes it any easier to be raw....because most people have a love for food and the taste and people who have weight to lose are just as vulnerable as anyone else.....i am not trying to be mean it just seemed like a sort of not so sensitive remark...and there are many books and people out there who are willing to help...most people do originally lose some weight when going raw...but once your body is detoxed and in full healthy working order it rebalances itself and you will gain those few pounds you lost if your body is not healthy weight!! so good luck to you and i know you can do it...i know it is hard though not wanting to lose the weight initially!! but don't despaire and keep trying

Had 4 oranges again for breakfast and 4 large bananas for lunch.

Boy I feel good today. Want to get to the gym. No, I want to build a gym lol!
Running last night felt different. My legs didn't hurt or tire. Uncanny after all these years.

Just have to get past the kitchen when I get home and whatever cooked smells await and get my green smoothie down. I will probably have some steamed something though.

It's cold outside, minus 29 with windchill. Looking forward to the snow, love running in a snowstorm, it feels cozy and intimate somehow like being one with the snowy night.

Breakfast was ordered in at work today. I had to sit there and smell hot coffee and cinnamon danish croissants etc. My sense of smell is so good though smelling was almost as good as tasting but I did not budge, kept my cold hands cupped around my hot mug of yerba mate.

Prism,

I do put berries in some of my smoothies, last eve used frozen rasberries, delicious but all those little seeds... Pineapple has to be ripe, I've learned that the hard way. The inside of my mouth feels like its been scraped right now from some I ate this AM.

Sachelle sorry for being insensitive, I hope I didn't offend anyone. The thin factor is a sore spot for me and I wish I had a nice 20 lb cushion. Besides I live in a cold climate and that complicates things, more cooked food cravings I think than if it was warmer. Thanks for the supportive words, I hear ya!

Victoria,

Would absolutely like to hook up and run but I'm not exactly in your league yet but if I have more days where I feel this great I will start running again, I used to love it. I wanna get a little bit further along. My runs are still very much just 25 minute jogs at this point. The only run I'm training for right now is my next jog lol!

My challenge right now is to get my left shoulder healed, I've got pretty bad tendonitis in it and I keep reinjuring it and it HURTS! Only thing exercise wise I can do is run really, that's a blessing.

Found a good massage therapist, not covered by insurance but he's really helping, not just the shoulder but my whole upper body is so messed up and tight it's not even funny. He said I have only got 50% movement in my neck etc.
No wonder I can only sleep lying on my back now.
Gotta get this taken care of or I'll never get to use the gym and put on some muscle.

Am trying Zeolite. I finally caved and ordered some. It's been a few days, have a headache but that could be from this baked potatoe casserole I had at lunch too. My mother brought it from church, a home-made take out, it's very good and today I could not resist it. Am bummed about my shoulder and how much money I'm spending lately.

Have lots of beautiful fruit all over the kitchen, found some huge canteloupes and canary melons on sale. It looks like someone is about to make fruit salad for 40 people lol!

Thanks for checking in Sachelle, Starfruit

My husband (ex) we're good friends has the diabetes too. I keep sending him articles etc about raw food, he's on a high protien south beach kind of a diet right now. He's worried about the sugar in fruit too and I don't know what to tell him except stop eating so much meat.

I told him that it's the fat that causes the diabetes as per a couple of posts/links by Bryan, wish I had them, maybe you've seen them? Something to do with the sugar hanging in the blood too long, the fat keeps it there. I'm sure it's covered in Graham's book but I can't get afford it (the book) this month.

Gotta admit as a long time high fat eater because I never had to worry about my weight but I sure feel different without all that fat in my diet, lighter lots more energy.

HI Dulset.....yes diabetes is a tough one with raw...i thought coming into this the body could heal anything...but bryan said with type 1 (not caused from weight or fat intake or anytype of food) that if the pancreas is damaged severly it most likely won't be healed....i tried going and not taking any insulin but it isn't working for me..i still need to take my insulin which is no fun....but hey you got to do what you have to do....so i started taking it again....i don't want the long term effects of high blood sugar over periods of times....you know??? it is such a struggle though because i feel like i am putting toxins in my body with the insulin but if i don't take it i feel like i will suffer long term effects...so i don't know what to do...but that is excellent your husband and you remained close...yes the typical dr...says that the south beach low carb diets are good..but they tend to rely on the low fat low carb ones.....wel i have the rainbow food live or whatever and it is high fat raw for first few months which i don't want to do so i don't know it is confusing....ayway now i have rambled on about me haha sorry.....well i am glad you are doing better..please keep us updated on your progress.i was wondering where you had gone too..got a little nervous...we are always here
take care

Spent the last week at a resort in Punta Cana thanks to my genourous sister who took my mother and me along and paid for the stay. The sun felt divine..

Got to gorge on local papaya and passion fruit etc. What a treat!!!
It was hard to get my greens though without my blender. The lettuce etc there was washed in chlorine and you could taste it sometimes so I ended up avoiding it along with most of the other salad stuff.

The cooked food however was too tempting and I did succumb as the week wore on.
What's my excuse now? It's not -29C here it was plus 29. But I did feel the difference :/ burp!

Will sure miss those platefuls of that glistening juicy red papya every day sad smiley

I am so craving a green smoothie though and look forward to my first one in a week!

I have a hard time washing greens with tap water because of the chlorine! Sometimes I will run it under the tap and then wring the life out of it, sometimes I will make a batch of distilled just to pour on it, and most times I just flick off or scratch off the most prominent dirt with a finger and then just eat it.

Glad you had a heliotropic, fresh fruit holiday - I bet you really tasted a difference between local papaya and papaya that's been flown and refrigerated and stored and driven all over the place before it gets to you. I always find that the good thing about getting back from travel, even sunhealing travel, is getting back to YOUR homey sources of healthy eating. You really crave it crazily by the end of a week. Enjoy your smoothie!

The good news...

I'm 100% raw today so far. Had a large papya for breakfast and 5 bananas for lunch and a delicious spinach/organic valencia orange green smoothie when I got home followed by a mashed avacado blended with two chopped tomatoes, no salt!

The bad news...

I'm not all that hungry, feel nauseous in fact because of painful tendonitis in my shoulder. Tried a few of days on Advil but it didn't work after a while and I hate taking them worse than eating cooked food. Nothing is helping with the pain, not physio, not massage. I hate this :<

I wonder if some kind of fasting would help me heal faster? I keep yanking it by accident. Bwah!
