Blue-Green Algae Pros and Cons, Please?
Posted by: GypsyArdor ()

What are the pros and cons of taking blue-green algae? I've never taken it, but it seems like a lot of raw foodists do. Rather than spend hours reading all kinds of stuff on the Net about it, I figured it would be easier to ask here. What have you found out about it--the pros and the cons of consuming it? Do you take it, or have you taken it?

Lots of love to all of you,

Wendi
XOXOXO

Blue-Green Algae!!! You mean 'Pond-Scum'?? LOL. I've always thought about trying it, but with Wheatgrass Juice, haven't felt the need. I am trying something Controversial....Sea Vegetables. They're Classified as Algae also. They will pick up heavy metals and polution if the water source is bad, but I trust the company I buy from. I like Kelp, Sea Lettuce, and Bladderwrack the Best. It's so much easier than trying to keep a variety of Fresh Greens....WY

Spirulina is great. It is a wonderful food for vegans/vegetarians. It is high in Iron, Protein, Vitamin B12 and Vitimin B Complex. It is also high in beta carotene (10X more concentrated than carrots) and has the clensing/anti-aging properties of all chlorophyll-rich foods. I don't think there are any cons in taking it. I put it in my smoothies. It has a mild flavor, so when you put it in smoothies you can hardly even taste it.

I don't take or have ever taken blue green algae. But here in northern California, there are warnings along the rivers to not let your dog into the water at the end of summer because dogs gets sick from ingesting blue green algae. Every time I see those signs I think about the the raw foodists eating this stuff smiling smiley

That is curious about the dogs. Are there no warnings about children? There are some things that are not toxic to humans but are to dogs like chocolate and raisins. There is something in cat food that is toxic to dogs.

We are getting waaaaay off topic, but... regarding warnings for dogs...

A friend of mine who works in biological research once explained how there are more laws governing how the treat animals used in research than there are regarding how the treat human subjects. I guess the figure we have free will so if the pharma companies lie to us... uh, I dunno where the logic is. All I know is that most dogs I know seem much happier than most of the people I know.

If we are what we eat, I'm in a vegetative state already.

I just got some e3 live after hearing so many great things about it from friends at gratitude, and I've been taking it for a day now. I don't notice any spectacular differences though....does any one else know about e3 live?

Let's see what they claim:

# Increase endurance and stamina

Calories in general will do this.

# Lift and balance mood to reduce stress

This has not been demonstrated.

# Increase mental focus and concentration

This has not been demonstrated.

# Balance blood-sugar levels

A whole foods diet rich in fiber will do this.

# Speed up recovery time

From what?

# Restore overall biochemical balance

What does this mean?

# Enjoy long-lasting energy boost

Calories in general will do this.

# Grow healthier skin, nails and hair

Your skin, nails, and hair will be plenty healthy if your diet is not deficient.

# Truly enhance overall well-being

This is impossible to prove.

I am not seeing any realistic claims that you couldn't get from the ordinary edible greens (antioxidants, minerals, antiglycation, essential aminos, etc.).

Regarding cons, there are a number of reports of liver and neurotoxins. The safe dose is estimated to be about 2g/day for a 60 kg adult.

I'd skip it because the price is outrageous and the claims are insulting.

I laugh so hard every time I see "POND SCUM" on this thread!

I tried an E3 chocolate bar once. It was yummy... VERY filling (I actually COULDN'T eat the whole thing--me, chocolate, WTF?!?!)... with mild undertones of cough syrup... and not something my sane mind would spend $20 for again.

That's the extent of my e3 experience.

One of my pet peeves is to see people criticize things they don't understand. T.C. Fry was the first person that I saw who called Blue Green Algae pond scum and most of the NHers were quick to jump on the band wagon. Here is a very interesting article by a NHer that at least did their homework...

"The Super Blue Green Algae Is...
the ONLY 'Green Revolution Food Product' I Endorse."
Nature's Way!
That The Algae is pond scum
And not our natural dietary
Ignores the fact that The Lake perimeter
Is, in reality, The Algae Cemetery!
You see, when The Algae live their full lives,
Are not harvested, and must pass away,
They seek Klamath Shores,
Lament a last breath, and see not another day.
And with the dead heat of the sun
And the passing of night,
The Dear, Deceased Algae make pond scum
It's Nature's Way of setting things right!
And yes, this pond scum, we absolutely must not eat.
And yes, it is The Rich, Wild Algae
From The Depths of The Lake
That is our just treat!

A Note from Victoria, Written by an Upliner

It was T.C. Fry, who called Super Blue GreenĀ® Algae "pond scum" at about the same time Victoria first introduced her GetWell StayWell Friends to The Algae in the fall of 1995. Following T .C.'s rhetoric, some Hygienists have been led to think of blue green algae from Klamath Lake as "pond scum." In reality, to do so is no different than calling lettuce "rabbit food" or sunflower seeds "bird food." It is just ridicule for the sake of ridicule. The truth is that The Algae only becomes scummy and unsavory in appearance around the periphery of The Lake where the water is shallow and where the sun heats up the temperature of the water, both of which promptly kill the blue green algae. Yes, dead algae becomes scummy. But the living algae, which is harvested from the deeper, colder, more flowing portions of The Lake, has the consistency and appearance of fresh vegetable clippings! The true appearance of flourishing blue green algae is gorgeous, glorious, fresh, sweet smelling, and emanating of life-supporting chlorophyll! You can see it on video, dancing and flowing in the water habitat for yourself.

I remember reading articles by T.C. Fry in
"Health Science", the monthly publication of the Natural
Hygiene Society. He was very intelligent, and wrote with
an uncommon clarity. His daughter Marty also wrote. He met
an early death.
I hope my sense-of-humor is not taken the wrong way. Go with
what works for you (even eating Algae), but be willing to turn
on a dime if you see a better way. That's the Plan anyway......WY

I had some a long time ago as a cooked-food vegan and heard about the chemicals that could be in it, wrote to the company I bought it from and called, never heard back, so i threw the stuff away since they couldn't confirm that it was safe and toxin-free.
