Thank you.

well-the day before yesterday,I got some very hard ones from the store and did not know either. i never did put them anywhere.i just left them in the closed bag they came in from the store. I left them on the table thinking it woud be forever before they ripened.well-today i was putting them in my fruit bowl and lo and behold...they were all soft.already! so i guess keep them closed in a bag. mine was the plastic bag from the store.taylor

I often put mine on a window sill and they soften up nicely.

One way to help ripen avocados is to take off the stem.

Also, ripening them in a paper bag is probably better than in a plastic bag.

Vegetables in plastic are fine, but any kind of fruit (including avocados) kept in a closed plastic bag begins to suffocate. That's why all prepackaged fresh fruit comes in nets (like oranges) or in containers that are perforated or have breathable cardboard bases with drain holes. If you put any fruit into a closed plastic bag, you will soon see condensation inside the bag. The result is a mushier fruit cause it's been suffocated. Avocados can quickly go rancid in a closed plastic bag, often before they even get ripe.

If you put fruit in a plastic bag when you buy it, it's advisable to keep the bag open at the top and remove the fruit from the bag as soon as you get home. Then save the plastic bag for the next time you go to the store.

You squeeze them like everybody at the grocery store so when you cut them open they are all brown.

joke.

I can never buy unripe avocados, I get too impatient and eat them hard.lol
