bitter chalky tasting lettuce

Has anybody experienced bitter or chalky tasting lettuce?

I notice Shelton talking about oxalic acid and mustard oil in greens. Are the greens high in these considered unhealty?

Greens high in oxalates are still healthy (spinach is very high in vitamin E) but it's probably better to think in terms of 1-2 handfuls/day (3-4 oz, maybe) being enough for them, whereas for the mild lettuces which are low in oxalates, you could have 10 or more times as much (2 or more lbs).

Your stomach will probably not let you eat very much of the high oxalate greens. I ate about 12 cups in one sitting once, when I first when veg in 1990. Never again!

As far as I know the only people identified for which oxalic acid might be a real concern is those with the familial tendency to stone formation. But how much of this is due to other lifestyle measures, I don't know.
