I just got a pound and a half of brown turkey figs at the Santa Monica Farmer's Market! This is the first time I have ever eaten figs in a large amount, and my mouth is incredibly sore... what's the deal? Serious pain, I feel like I rubbed sandpaper all over my tongue.

But they are super delicious! Has anyone ever had a panache fig? They are striped!

I have a Black Mission Fig tree but I'm not really hyped up over figs..they are pretty bland to me.

The birds love them though! I wonder if all figs taste pretty much alike?

Love,
Prism

never had the mouth thing and I've eaten a lot at a time.. the bland thing comes sometimes.. although I generally can get some great ones... the best place I ever got figs, oddly enough, was when I lived in this puny little town called Houghton way up north in Michigan... it's on Lake Superior and there was an organic farmer there. the town only had 7,000 people in it... anyway the figs were pretty much a religious experience.

Prism, I don't have a fig tree, but here's what works with my cherry trees:

1.To pick the figs at their ripest

2. To fertilize the tree with something natural, like compost, covering all inside the drip line, so the next year's fruit is flavourful

3. To prune the tree as needed, to conserve the nourishment for the best fruit-bearing branches

4. To keep it watered enough so the leaves don't droop during dry times.

Sorry if these are all no-brainer suggestions- I'm not a great gardener but I know some who are and I listen.

morrison66 - That reminds me of something you'll appreciate, since you know Vancouver:

About 3 years ago a friend lived in Strathcona near Chinatown on Union St. That's a really old area of Vancouver, as you probably know. I was there one day when a plum tree across the alley was full of ripe, delicious, heirloom plums! They were absolutely awesome, They were better than any plums I have ever had and I had never seen these before. The tree is right on the alley, so the branches overhanging the alley are fair game. The tree was very old and almost certainly free of growing chemicals, judging by the old Chinese couple's yard.

I hope I remember to go back this year, I haven't remembered once since then.

hey forrest!

the same thing happens to my tongue when i eat a bunch of figs. my dad has a huge fig tree down at the ranch... i ride my bike down there and hang out in the tree for dinner. i eat 'dem figs until my belly bloats! smiling smiley

i think the reason why your tongue may become raw is because figs are EXTREMELY high in enzymes...especially fresh ones. if this holds true, think of all the gunk these figs are breaking down in your system! again, this is only my intuition...i'm not sure...someone correct me if i'm wrong! smiling smiley

CHEERS!

love,
m.

Figs will burn your tongue when they are unripe, especially the black varieties (but not the red ones). They need to be really soft and squishy when you eat them; though it is easy to get excited around the trees and eat the stiffer ones.

In addition to what dream earth said, when you've eaten enough super ripe figs, they too can cause the fig burn. Take it as sign to stop eating for now until the burn goes away.

<<<<grinning>>>>

you know what they say Prism...sexy minds think alike.

But can you imagine just how itchy that fig leaf must have been to poor Adams, uh, fruit? Every time I pick figs I get itchy hands and forearms, so I can well imagine...

here's to fig burn! To paraphrase Paul: It's better to eat figs than to lust for them

Hi you guys are right. They were kinda stiff. I looked it up, fig tree sap and figs themselves to a lesser extent contain a proteolytic (meaning it breaks down protein structures) enzyme called "ficin". It is similar to papain in unripe papaya and bromelain in pineapple.

I got some super ripe mystery green ones and some black missions and the irritation was like 1/100th what it was with the less ripe brown turks. They were so damn tasty! 7 bucks a basket seemed worth it.

I used to experience the burn from fresh figs so I started peeling them before eating: no more burn. The irritating element seems to be in the skin.

I don't know what you people pay, but I just saw black mission figs for $18 a lb. at the local store. They weren't organic and I think they were dried.

yeah dvdai, I don't know that I'd pay 18 a pound for figs.

Luckily, the common variety fig tree is found abundantly in my state and it just so happens to be fig season as we speak. I picked a small container of the first of the ripe ones this past weekend and ate them for dinner; sliced and topped with a fresh, thick almond milk. so good.

I don't think I've ever had fresh figs of any other type except what is called the "common" fig....so much to look forward to.

I just read something interesting on Stanley Bass's website. I love figs and sometimes I notice that when the burn starts to come on with really ripe figs, it is coming from the skin and when I gut out the inside I don't get burned.

Well Stanley Bass did some observation of monkeys eating figs and noted, "I was somewhat annoyed to see them bite into expensive figs, eat the soft sweet center and seeds, and throw away the whole outside (the acid part). They never ate the skins or unripe part of fruit."

Interesting! Maybe if we had an abundance of figs at our disposal, we could eat them the way monkeys do and eat a lot more without the burn. In fact, I want to try this, to just eat the insides and see whether the burn even shows up!

Love,
Uma

I tried my first fresh fig from the farmer's market the other day, and was properly wowed.

It kind of tasted like some kind of coconut pudding with jam in the middle.

No fig burn though :-) :-) :-) Super expensive, however! It was 89p for 1 fig!!!
