Date: February 05, 2008 02:38AM I am just wondering if the tamarinds you buy in the store are dehydrated? The ones I buy don't label themselves as 'dried' but they have that thick, sticky texture. Is this how they grow? Re: Tamarind

Date: February 05, 2008 02:53AM i don't have any idea but i do have a box of tamarind on the table right now! i have had them for too long though and they are very dried out and hard to eat. that leads me to believe that they grow on the tree like that and are meant to be consumed when sticky but still pretty soft.
tamarind is so wonderful. i would like a recipe to try though, i usually just eat it as is. did you know it's what coca-cola is flavoured with? Re: Tamarind

Date: February 05, 2008 03:05AM I have had fresh tamarinds in Thailand, and they were sticky. I like the sweet tamarinds, as opposed to the acidic ones. Re: Tamarind

Date: February 05, 2008 03:49PM This entire week I was regretting not grabbing the box of tamarinds I saw at the market... I think a part of me said, "I don't know what to do with them," but I should have listened to the other part that said, "You eat them, silly." Re: Tamarind

Date: February 05, 2008 04:31PM I get mine from Whole Foods, they are in open refrigeation along with other produce and are thick and sticky. Ocasionally there are dried-out ones that are very hard. Re: Tamarind

Date: February 05, 2008 10:36PM I get mine from a West Indies store near our house... I love tamarind. When I was a kid we used to eat it like candy rolled in brown sugar. My website: The Coconut Chronicles Re: Tamarind

where I live most of the year in Thailand there are alot of sour n sweet mixed but once in a while you can find sweet. The tree in the front of the house is full of them but they are the not so sweet my wife uses them in place of lime they are so sour. The neighbors come over and grab a few for certain Thai dishes. Date: February 09, 2008 08:43AM I just had some for the first time today. I remembered using the tamarind paste in Thai cooking, but I never tried the whole fruit. This stuff had a dry brown skin and sticky flesh around the seeds...and pretty sour, which was fine. They did remind me of those sour candies angie1. Definitely couldn't eat more than one in a sitting.
