how to ripen fruit?

Hello

Sadly much of the fruit that I buy is not ripe. What is the best way to ripen up fruit such as :mango, kiwi fruit, plums.

Avocados just ripen up fine in the fruit bowl - I usually put the bananas on them. But the mango sometimes go off before they have ripened which is really annoying. I think I read that some one puts them outside in the direct sun. Does this work well?

looking forward to your answers.

Try and choose fruit that is as ripe as possible when you buy it. Most fruits do not ripen well after they have been picked (with the exception of avocados and bananas.)

(I think, although I could be wrong on this one, that avocados often fall off the tree before they are ripe anyway, and then ripen on the ground.)

I read that post too about sunning your fruit too, but istead of putting it out side I've taken to putting hard-to-ripen fruits like pineapple in my window to sunbathe. I haven't done it enough yet to figure out if it ripens faster.

I put my fruits on my window and they ripen very fast.Doesn't need sun for it,just the outside wind is enough.

I would avoid putting fruit in the sun. Your brown paper bag method on a counter-top or hanging basket tends to work fine. Keep in mind that only SOME fruits are going to benefit to any great degree from additional ripening time off the plant. Most just become softer..but not sweeter.

I heard that most fruits ripen under the tree and therefore are shade ripened rather than in direct sunlight.

I'm sure my pineapple loved the sun, pineapple grows in an open field.

The funny thing is that, the next day or so, I had forgoten that I had put it in the window and I walked past the window and I had this bizarre feeling that something was happy over there. I pushed aside the curtain and saw my pineapple and I was like. "Oh yes, now I remmember, I put that there." I don't usually connect with fruit like that to the point where I might pick up "emotions" but it was so weird. I almost didn't eat it since I had connected with it, but I was like, what else am I going to do with it, I'll have to throw it out in a week anyway.

The next pineapple I put in the window didn't "talk" to me though.

At least you knew that one was 100% live and kicking.

Plants chat via root systems over great distances, and some plants even have chemicals very identical to our own neurotransmitters... but that probably calls for another thread. :O

I did get a strange "feeling" from my bamboo one night, only to discover he was sick and infested with bugs (got that situation cleared up, though!). I'd imagine people who do a lot of gardening have an incredible intuition... or just a simple sensitivity to life. =)

I'd like also to know more ripening techniques for different fruit/vegetables. I really dislike eating unripe red bell peppers.

take all your fruit, put them in a cabinet together. Ethylene is released by ripening fruit, the more ethylene in the air, the quicker the fruit ripens.

In that case, can too much of a good thing become a bad thing...? Is there a risk of spoiling?

I tried to leave the red bell peppers in the fridge for a while. I donlt remember them actually getting redder. Maybe I did not leave them long enough?
