Green Smoothies - Is it just the juice?

Date: May 20, 2008 12:41PM Are there any studies to validate the idea that a high spend blender could break greens to make them digestible? The health benefits of juicing are very well known but those of blending are very questionable. Could it be just the juice coming out of the blending? Most people do not chew the green smoothies, it all comes out in the stools. Re: Green Smoothies - Is it just the juice?

Date: May 20, 2008 01:20PM It makes sense to me that High-Speed Blending is better for digestion than chewing everything we eat. Who here chews properly anyway? Besides, 'chewing' a smoothie adds digestive juices.
One 'trick' in blending is to blend the Greens first (with water), then add the rest of the ingredients to finish the blending process. That way the Greens are broken down better....WY Re: Green Smoothies - Is it just the juice?

Date: May 20, 2008 07:54PM I don't think a high speed blender is necessary. You can add water to a conventional blender, then blend on the highest speed for about a minute instead of a few seconds.
I doubt there would be much of a difference in uptake between that and juice. You do get some of the fiber that way too, but the benefits of that will not be the same as eating the whole food. Re: Green Smoothies - Is it just the juice?

Date: May 20, 2008 08:13PM This morning, I discovered I enjoy the taste of a green smoothie, but HATE the taste of green juice. I drank my first green juice, pear + kale + dandelion. That "grassy essence," that similar smell to wheatgrass that makes me sick, comes out in the green juice. The pear did nothing to take off the edge at all, IMO.
I have no idea what this has to do with nutrition, though! =) Re: Green Smoothies - Is it just the juice?

Conventional blender cannot do what high speed blender do no matter how many times you run them, they do not come close. If you own both you will know. It is not just how many runs, it is the power. Date: May 20, 2008 09:47PM ^If I had taken pictures throughout the past few months, I could post a "failed raw gourmet" thread... You only have to own a normal speed one to know.
But, on the same token, if I'm only using simple equipment, I have to stick to simple eating. =D Re: Green Smoothies - Is it just the juice?

Date: May 20, 2008 10:01PM I love my k-tec. Aside from my knife and butcher block table (thank you khale) it is the most important piece of equipment in my kitchen. It is so worth saving the money up for, raw or SAD.
I am the same about green juice. I love green smoothies but cannot stomach green juice and I like the taste of grass. I don't know what it is but it makes me literally have to work to keep it down. Re: Green Smoothies - Is it just the juice?
