Help! I've never bought a mango before

Date: August 01, 2008 02:43AM I saw them on sale 2/$1 today but I passed because I didn't know if they should be bought organic + I've never selected one before. They had some that were all green and some that were red/green/yellow. The green ones felt squishy to the touch but the rainbow ones (which were more appealing to me) were hard to the touch, so I opted to not buy any. Can anyone tell me how to decipher these varieties? I'd like to go back and stock up. How long do mangoes take to ripen? How do I know if they're ripe, etc? Can I refrigerate them once they're ripe? Thanks! Re: Help! I've never bought a mango before

Date: August 01, 2008 02:53AM Mangoes are a bit controversial. I eat them once in awhile. The controversy lies in the fact that the ones from Mexico are sprayed. Maybe the ones that are organic are not. Dave Mason is our fruit grower so he may be able to shed some light here. Dave?
I buy ones that are already ripe unless I want an unripe one which I put some sea salt on to eat. The ripe ones should be soft with liquid seeping out of the stem. They should smell sweet. The mangoes are a bit stringy but they are succulent. You cut the skin off and then cut the flesh from around the seed. I cut on one side of the pit and then the other and then cut around the pit for the last bits. If you bite into a mango, it will run down your chin, like a ripe peach. Good luck. Therese Re: Help! Date: August 01, 2008 05:57AM Sure. It's like an avocado....you want NO breaks or bruises (spots that are mushy). The whole thing should be firm...with just a little yield when you squeeze with your fingers. Avoid rock-hard ones. Color varies, but look for more non-green. You can ripen them by just leaving them out on your counter until they reach the above state of 'slightly yielding'. Then just eat or refrigerate. The easiest way to eat is to hold at the top with your finger....and cut off each of the four sides...then peel. It's all good.
