Date: August 06, 2008 03:24AM Hello have any of you tried glasswort, or salicornia? Its a plant which grows next to the ocean or sea, in rather salty areas. Naturally, its salty, and full of minerals. I had a chance to collect some the other day, and tried a small amount, but took a few branches to root at home. They are now in a shallow pan of sand, mixed with peat, salt and water. I have my hopes that these will root, and some small portions of the plant have turned upwards to the sun.
[en.wikipedia.org] Apparently some people make a juice out of it and use it as a substitute for soy sauce. [www.invil.org] Reportedly it doesn't make you thirsty if you drink a large quanity of the juice. Im not sure how that works, with all those minerals, and sodium. Perhaps its different from sea salt or table salt because its in a plant. A type of salt can be made from the juice. Re: Glasswort, Salicornia

Date: August 07, 2008 04:47AM I nibbled on one species (5 species in California) and found it too salty for my tastes, but with relatives like spinach, beet, and goosefoot, it is worthwhile looking into. Try a bunch of different plants as there can be much variation. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
