Self-Catering Raw in Arizona and Southern California

Hello,
Seems like we might have to do some self-catering whilst on holiday in Arizona and Southern California after the Raw Spirit Festival in Sedona.

A few queries for those of you living in those states (or know them well):

Whilst travelling around, which is the best place to buy organic raw fruits / veg etc? (We won't be in the places long enough to get to know the local small shops and farmers markets). Here in the UK, for example, there are supermarket chains that sell organic fruit and veg throughout the country and it is simply a matter of driving to one and filling up. Which large stores would you recommend for organic produce?

Also, what organic fruits will be ripe and in season in September in Arizona and Southern California?

Many thanks,
John

This might be a dumb question, but what do you mean by self catering?

I'd also like to know, as we'll be doing same. In SoCal we have a motorhome/rv, then self-catering accommodation in Arizona.

As appears that 'self-catering' might be a UK term, it means making food for ourselves as opposed to buying meals in a restaurant/hotel.

P.S.Thanks Debbie for your explanation of self-catering. Hope you have a good trip too.

In Arizona we have Fry's, Albertson's, Safeway, and Basha's that are large supermarket chains which provide some organic produce. Trader Joe's, Sunflower Market, and Whole Foods are not quite as large, but have as much or more organics.

There is a wide variety of fruits available in September--apples, oranges, grapefruit, various melons, peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, grapes, bananas, pineapple, papaya, mango, persimmons, tomatoes, squash, pumpkin, cucumber, peppers, and probably more.

Yes,you'll find a wide variety of fruits and veggies-no worries there.

Grocery stores also- Whole Foods all over L.A., Mother's Market in Orange County. Lassen's also in Ventura County. These have a raw vegan deli items, Juice bars. Organics, natural products

Farmers markets all over-really not a problem to find: [www.farmernet.com] Probably the Westside and Santa Monica( especially) Fm would be your best bet because not all of these are large.

There is an organic farmers market in Santa Monica listed. Go early to the Santa Monica markets, I hear, they're popular with local chefs.

Another tool you can use to locate things is "yellowbook". Its an online directory of products and services to be found in any given location. Here's the link to that:
To find zip codes in a given city to enter in yellowbook if you don't know them go to:
[zip4.usps.com]

So for example if you want a colonic in Santa Monica go to yellowbook.com and type in the zip code "90401" and "colonic" then "find it" and it will give you a list of places with phone numbers, addresses and a map. You can use yellowbook to find almost any product or service on your trip.

good idea-

oh a few more that I know of: Erewhon ( really good store)
[www.erewhonmarket.com] I see that David Wolfe is going to be there on the 21st Sept.

Co-Opportunity in Santa Monica:

I'd personally prefer these two and Mother's( although you might not be in orange country) Whole foods is"corporate".
Which you go to depends on what area of the city you're in-it's too difficult to drive all over town in L.A.

If you happen to visit Pasadena to the east, they it also would have the resources you'd need.

this might be useful:

If you're in the Sand Diego area lots of resources down there as well. Socal will be easy. smiling smiley

whole foods is ubiquitous and in every major city Otherwise the effort to drive to and find little places can be tedious.

the question is what cities will you be in?
The whole function of raw food networking is a reliable network of raw organic resources.
