Several posts have made reference to the idea of home gardens growing foods.
This link I received is a youtube video about a family on the west coast doing just that.

Yes. I've seen this one before. It's awesome what folks CAN do....or how productive just a small plot of land can be.

One thing I noticed was that several of the appliances they used were not dependent on electricity. During periods of power outages, such as during or after storms, then their value can truly be appreciated since they wouldn't interfere with their routine.

We're working towards this with our 1/3 acre lot. We don't have any animals yet (except a dog and two cats), but we want a few chickens for tractoring and eggs for Hubby and my little girl. We ripped out most of the grass and planted the whole yard and were able to sell food to the restaurant I was working at and the co-op. We're looking at expanding our client base a little next year. Our little girl is already great at planting and growing food, plant identification and eating food most kids wouldn't. It's a lot of work, but very rewarding, and it is lovely to not have to worry about food. We are working towards lengthening our growing season (last night was our first big frost and we think that the greenhouse got too cold -- one of the things to work on). Things are much different in Massachusetts than California. We miss the year round growing season (we were farmers out there). We're still on the grid, but that is another issue that we want to resolve eventually. It's great to be moving in this direction.
