Everyone seemed to like my plantain ripening guide, so I wrote about the history of the plantain. It's a common fruit with a lot of past. Hope you enjoy.

I grew up eating plantain, or "platanos" in spanish. We had them at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. At one point, during my teen years of course, I refused to eat one more plantain. I even remember being embarrassed to bring school mates to my home because they always commented on how weird it was that we ate cooked bananas. My mom wouldn't use the plantains until they had a near rotting appearance. That's when they were ripe and ready. My friends were so grossed out by that.
