raw vs cooked question

Hey folks,

I've been vegan for 3 years, and now raw for 27 days!
It's been soooooo amazing. I cant even tell you.

A friend of mine was bringing up the question that " cooked
food kills of any harmful bacteria disease or pesticides...blah blah blah "

I understand that it also kills of all the enzymes and nutrients too, so
whats the point right?

I'd like any feedback to come back with.

Thanks so much

Eating cooked food is like going on a nutrient fast because cooking destroys so many of the foods nutrients.

willows,

Congrats on going raw! Cooking does kill harmful bacteria, but on balance, since it kills nutrients, it's a short-change and your body's left with a hefty bill of health problems. Cooking DOES NOT kill pesticides. I've heard this before and honestly don't know where people get it from. Pesticides and herbicides aren't alive, so cannot be killed. They can be washed off if they are on the surface of a food, but not if the seed's been germinated in them[standard of operations for GMOs, unfortunately]. Happy Eating smiling smiley

Many pesticides are systemic - this means that they are sprayed onto the leaves and travel through the plant to its roots in order to kill it. You cannot wash this off or as Tamukha says 'kill' it.

I reckon cooking kills off 'good' bacteria also. But really, what other living creature 'cooks' it's food???

I hear you. It's not an all-or-nothing equation. If you forgo cooking, you gain health....and then harmful bacteria or other crap become far less of an issue. You can't live in fear...you can only pursue health.

This is why we have beneficial bacteria -- to kill harmful bacteria. I don't worry about harmful bacteria at all. My mom eats cooked food and uses that stupid antibacterial soap and always has infections of one sort or another.
