Well, here's a few things:

-According to nutritiondata.com, watermelon SEEDS contain the most protein per gram compared to all other nuts and seeds (and all other whole raw vegan foods). They contain 28.3g of protein for every 100g of seeds. (nutritiondata.com doesn't list hemp seeds, which, according to "nutiva" contain a little over 30g of protein for every 100g of seeds)

-100 grams of watermelon seeds also contain 40% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for IRON, 129% of the RDA for MAGNESIUM, 75% of the RDA for PHOSPHORUS, 68% of the RDA for zinc, and 81% of the RDA for MANGANESE. (nutritiondata.com).

The seeds taste pretty good too.

-Watermelon is considered horticulturally to be a vegetable, but it is considered botanically to be a fruit (World Book Encyclopedia).

-Horticultural definition of fruit: Fruit is an edible seed-bearing structure that (1) consists of fleshy tissue and (2) is produced by a perennial (watermelon is produced by an annual, not perennial).

-Botanical definition of fruit: Fruit is the part of a flowering plant that contains the plant's seeds.

Best wishes, and enjoy your watermelon! -Ally

years ago i remember reading in the Sunfood Diet
that watermelon as a whole food (flesh, seeds and rind)
is in balance on the triangle.

thus one can live well on watermelon exclusively for
a long time (which i have done quite a bit of)

anyone know if that claim was left in the new edition
of that book?

also, what other foods are in balance?

why don't they sell watermelon seeds in stores?

Whenever I eat watermelon and I eat the seeds and I poo afterward, if I look at the poo I see the seeds. same thing with sunflower seeds. They are usually a lighter color. can you really digest them through that hard shell?

By the way, watermelon is my favorite, too. winking smiley

Another thing to consider is the Calcium to Phosphorus ratio of the food eaten. That ratio should be greater than 1. Here is a chart on that. [www.njboxers.com]
So watermelon is good but too much of it may be bad because the ratio is less than 1.
Here is an explanation of why too much of a food with a ratio less than 1 may not be good.

Eating watermelons and other melons keep me cool (enough) on hot days.

When bees are around to pollinate the watermelon patch the red meat of the melon is a much deeper, darker red (and is probably sweeter too!)

Seedless watermelons are an obscenity and an insult to the entire watermelon species. It's like rape, that they have had their seeds thus taken away. I never buy seedless watermelons which have been hybridized to accomodate "fast food convenience" consciousness.

24 Carrots,

Re: your oh so true comments about the seedless watermelons. My husband and I have noticed that the seedless watermelons are not as sweet as the regular old-fashioned wonderful kind of watermelons.

Or at least that's our impression from the ones we've eaten this year.

-women/girls with mutilated genitals
-nutered/fixed cats & dogs
-animals with trimmed ears & tails
-animals that r used in circus & made to jump through hoops of flame, etc.
-dolphins & whales that r kept in small aquariums, for human entertainment &...supposedly...education (!!! what does it teach us!!!...that it's o.kay to do that to another! for our good/benefit!!)
& yes

one more thing

WATERMELON SEEDS (or any other melon seeds)
-to be able to digest/absorb them better
we can
make a DELIIIICIOUS milk
out of them,
same way we do with any other, non melon seeds, with these, we need to strain it though, to separate the hask,
then add/sweeten with dates & add fresh ginger too, for great bite & additional help in digestion/healing

IT IS LIGHT-DELICIOUS-SPICY-SLIGHTLY MELONLY FLAVOURED, try it, U'll like it!

i don't throw out any of my melon seeds, & if my housemate does, by accident, i pull them out of the garbage, wash them & use them, there,s my extra re-cycling
RAW LOVE & BLESSINGS, Basia

Speaking of seedless watermelons, please see this post about how the USDA (not even Monsanto this time!) is planning to unleash a plan for genetically modified plums and what we can do to stop it!

Ha Ha Ha no vodka is not raw it is distilled
wich involves a lot of boiling and condensation.

and I'm suprised how much personification you
instill in you'r food as far as vegans go.

if you ask me plants are like hair growing
on the earth. it shound be trimmed and clean
but not shaved. that is ugly.

too much earth shaving.

and as far as genetically altered food,
bad, as in not good. corn with frogs and bacteria ?
what kind of sick sadistic mind pictured that
combination. it must be stopped.

and hybridizing not as bad,the pieces fit
together i guess. people have been selectively
breeding for years, at least the lucky ones
and look where that got us ? maybe a bad example
or a good example

I don't like seedless watermellons either.

I didn't know baout that seed thing though,
good stuff, I'll try to asorb the seed in to my
being and grow stronger.
