Lettuce Juice?

I've been enjoying green juices a lot lately. Yesterday my dad gave me about a bushel of lettuce, because he's thinning the beds on his farm and had more than he and my mom could eat. I had the brilliant idea that though I couldn't eat that much salad before it all goes bad, I could try using the lettuce for juice. This morning I made some lettuce juice, then added some fruits to sweeten it up.

I was surprised to find how bitter the juice was! I was even more surprised to find how my body reacted. Increased body temperature, a little wooziness, and a very tingly tongue. It all cleared up in about twenty minutes.

Does anyone know what this is?

my first thought to wonder would be if your lettuce is somehow contaminated ..

lettuce does containe opiates (you can google this) so maybe you have an opiate sensitivity

but my first thought , with the tingly tongue is that your lettuce is somehow contaminated with toxins somehow smiling smiley

i had a whole box of plums i had to toss because theydid the same thing .. after the 3rd or 4th one i could taste some sort of chemical on them ..

frances,

Either what Jodi said, or if the lettuce were very fresh, it might have been full of those bitter saponins that sometimes appear as a milky white substance at the stem end.
