Severe bloating after eating melon
Posted by: The Fruit Faery ()

I have been blending melon with water and ice for breakfast (on an empty stomach) for a few weeks now.
I noticed that my clothes were a little tighter after drinking them over the last couple of days.

This morning on an empty stomach I ate half a cantaloupe melon.
Within 10 mins i experienced severe bloating. (To the extent that i look pregnant/ fit to give birth!

Eating cooked carbs causes severe bloating for me. I totally excluded cooked carbs from my diet over a year ago. It was like a trip back to my pre raw days!

When I bloated like this (pre raw) my energy level would plummet and i would instantly feel irritable and miserable. Guess what! exactly the same symptoms came with the bloating this morning.

Anyone else experience this or have any idea what may cause this?
I wont be eating any more melon until i can figure this out that's for sure!
Feeling a bit low about this, but also pleased to have identified a possible culprit.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe the cantaloupe wasn't ripe ?

FF,

Ditto what EZ says. Or, your body just isn't liking melons at the moment. Maybe switch to something else for a while and see how you do.

Hi Tamukha,

How do you know her body isn't liking melons?

There's nothing wrong with bloating. Bloating can look attractive (unlike fat of course 99% of the time) in my opinion.

If you feel that self-conscious remember it's vanity that's causing it and not to do with your health. Just don't go out or whatever after you eat melon.

I hink it's more likely that it was over-ripe, ie a little fermented.

I ate some fermented water-melon once. It didn't taste right, but being very greedy and foolish I ate quite a lot.

My tummy blew up very quickly, and spent the whole day in much discomfort-and pain!

SuperInfinity,

I assume you are joking. When you have eaten something, bloating, like dyspepsia, nausea, and stomach pains, is a sign that your body is having difficulty breaking that food down. It is an anomalous digestive response, in other words. If you aren't struggling to digest that food, it processes indiscernably and gets evacuated a few hours later. Right?

Debbie thanks for your sensible post!
Your right! It was a very ripe melon that i ate. I just hadn't made the connection.
I have also spent the day in much discomfort and pain.
Thank you so much

I wasn't sure that your post deserved a reply....
However, maybe you require a little enlightenment.......
I hope that you never have the misfortune to suffer with long term severe bloating.
It is incredibly debilitating and very painful.
Vanity, my darling, is NOT the issue here!

Well if it's bad bloating maybe yeah. Right now I'm getting regurgitation of honeydew melon. This often happens me while I'm eating fine, I don't find it uncomfortable or strange in any way (although I do try to keep the acid away from my teeth). It's a natural phenomenon that has always happened to me no matter what foods I ate.

I didn't realise that it was hurting you FruitFaery, I don't think you mentioned that or how it felt specifically although you did mention clothes feeling tighter. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. The only melons I eat regularly are honeydew ones.. and for some reason I HATE watermelons. tongue sticking out smiley

Thanks for the apology.
Im pleased that i responded to your post now.

I have a history of severe bloating which spans over 20 years. Only eating raw helps eliminate this problem.
I was really shocked to bloat like this on totally raw.
Its really extreme.
You would have to witness it to believe it. Many people have asked if was pregnant when bloated!
I seriously balloon from a flat stomach to having to put bigger clothes on to accommodate the bloating. It usually takes about three days to settle. It causes lots of pain and soreness and my energy simply disappears.
Anyway, thanks to Debbie, i have my answer.
I will stay away from over ripe melons!!!!!
All good

Hmmm maybe part of it is because you often add ice. Cold foods aren't good for the body...it shocks the system. Maybe try eating melon without the ice?

FF, here's an article on melons with various tests of ripeness.

Hope that will help re-establish your enthusiasm for them, and that 'football tummy'(as in UK football anyway...) doesn't occur again!

Hi Debbie thanks
Its time for a clear out and repair.
The 'football tum' kick started my enthusiasm for a juice feast, which I started today.

Many thanks to everyone for all your help, support and advice in my hour of crisis!

By the way...
The puppy is doing very well on her raw vegan diet. I look at her for inspiration!

I love all types of melon but have always gotten bloated as a result - really bloated. I read the book Eat Right for Your Blood Type (cant remember the author) and fond our that I am a blood Type A and am not supposed to eat melon. There are other foods as well that I experience bloating from ie. tomatoes - i get bloated from them as well... but not as much as the melons.

It may be the issue for you as well. It is a good book and I felt like a million on it when i was totally raw and eating right for my blood type!

Good luck
Tara

Hi Tara
Thanks for your post. I am also blood type A.
I have a friend who is blood type 0. She appears to thrive on her recommended diet.
I don't normally have a problem with melon.
I don't usually eat that many. I had a small case of them, so some became over ripe. I think that this was the cause of the problem.
I have only ever bloated on raw once before, naively combining banana with tahini in a smoothie. Only ever did that once!

I have a copy of the eat right book that you referred to. I must admit that there were several things in the list that i do not wish to give up! Especially tomatoes! So, to be honest, I just didn't even give it a try! I'm pleased that it works for you. Interesting feedback.
Thank you ffx
