Spirulina (cyanobacteria) + ALS
Posted by: Lee_123 ()

I have read that there is a possible link between cyanobacteria and ALS

Google: cyanobacteria ALS

Google: cyanobacteria spirulina

This concerns me as I have ingested a lot of spirulina in the past.

Any thoughts?

hi lee...

think that hte bulk of the information regarding als is pointing to the unusal amount of cases that up on the island of guam in regards to eating of cycad tree nuts which are made into flour after leaching out the toxic pricincipals of the nut and also consumption of meat from flying foxes on the island which feed on the cycad tree nuts. evidently the neurotoxins from cycad tree nuts can cause a disease which is almost identical to als.

while searching ....i ran across an interesting bit of information regarding "sod1". sod is one the antioxident enzyme systems natually produced in our bodies and is available in certain foods includind barleygrass, wneatgrass, cabbage broccoli, and a few others. it also available in a few supplemental forms. it slows down the deterioration rate in als. here is the link to what i found. do a search on sources of sod (super oxide dismutase) and see what you can find.

continued from previous post....

looking over the article in the link..... i copied this

The finding suggests that aggregated proteins may elude normal cellular “housecleaning” methods, or their formation is heightened by stress conditions in the cell. As people with ALS begin to experience symptoms, the buildup of protein is rapid and dramatic. However, it is well established that significant damage to the nervous system occurs well before the patient has any symptoms.

a potent formula of proteolitic enzymes may help to break these proteins down before they "aggregate".

i have heard or read that there are a couple of excellent heavy duty enzyme formulas circulating in the raw food community but i personally do not have that information at this time.

inaddition.....if i were you i would also investigate sources for super oxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalase. these are the major antioxidant exymes produced by the human body to protect us from what is termed free radical destructive activities.

hope this helps.

My original post was a bit poorly worded. My concern is:

Is spirulina a neurotoxin?

There are two types of ALS, the inherited type (familial ALS or FALS) and sporadic (SALS). The Guam cases are considered sporadic. Both FALS and SALS are thought to be triggered by neurotoxins (regardless of whether the neurotoxins are made by God or man).

However, you touched upon the issue of antioxidants -- highly recommended for all of us in this toxic world. I will check out the stuff you linked to. Once you get ALS, I think supplementation is in order, besides plenty of raw, live foods.

I've heard about that. There is little progress in the area of stem cells however that is where the current hope lies. While researchers work on that angle, I hope to stay in as good a shape as possible through diet, supplementation, and yoga!

Various people around me have suggested, "Now you can eat steak and drink!"

But I don't like to eat (and drink) that stuff. I like eating fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables.

I'm getting into juicing. I'm craving green smoothies and green juice.

I feel sorry for people who eat toxic crap.

I don't know if I can beat this thing. I don't know if I can even slow it down. But I do know that I'm not going to help it along!

Lee,

Please believe that you can beat this thing, or make it better. Your cells hear you when you are positive, and they hear you when you are negative. Tell them to fight, and they will, with the help of raw foods! I wish you the best of health : )

Lee_123.....If I'm understanding you right, you have been
diagnosed with ALS, and you think Spirulina has contributed to the
condition in a negative way. Is that a fair assessment?
I've read some of your posts on Juicing, so I know you're doing
something. Have you tried your new GreenStar yet?
I'm 'toying' with a Green Liquid Diet, and believe it can strengthen our Bodies......WY

I have read that cyanobacteria is a neurotoxin.

Neurotoxins are thought to be a cause of ALS.

Spirulina is a form of cyanobacteria.

For this post, that's all.

Otherwise, yes, I just started using the GS! ...No opinion yet on GS v. Omega. They are different, and it may take a while to decide which to keep. I wish I could keep both. smiling smiley
