How do you pick a Honeydew melon?

Date: September 02, 2009 10:18PM "No good!!"...Dave said after squeezing the Honeydew melon
I had spent several minutes picking out for myself. "Why not?" ...I said. "It's not sticky"...was his answer. He touched another one on display and said..."Now this is a Good one". I felt it and said... "This is the last one I would have picked". We totally disagreed. I had used all the guidelines I know....1) slightly soft to the touch. 2) shaking it revealed the seeds were partially loose inside. and 3) the skin wasn't perfectly smooth, but had 'wrinkles'. I sometimes go with color....darker is better. Does anyone here have a method for picking out Honeydews?.....WY P.S. Dave is no Dummy. He's the Chief-of-Security here where I live, a respected Duplicate Bridge player, and a good Lawn Bowler. I told him I'd call him if I had picked out a good one. Maybe I won't. I get tired of saying 'I told you so'. Re: How do you pick a Honeydew melon?

Date: September 02, 2009 11:57PM It has to smell ripe (or sweet). If there is no smell, then there is a high probability that it is going to be hard and not sweet. Re: How do you pick a Honeydew melon?

Date: September 03, 2009 12:22AM growing up in the canadian fruit belt, my mom knows a thing or two about picking melons. it should have a scent, as Bryan says, right where the stem was. when you slap it w the palm of your hand (like a drum) it should sound hollow. those are the two requirements and so far neither she nor i have gone wrong very often. Date: September 03, 2009 12:43AM My Father thumped Watermelons to tell if they were ripe.
I never knew you could 'slap' Honeydews. What if someone in the store sees me?....WY P.S. I go by weight too. Heavy means lots of natural Water. P.P.S. Bryan...good tip on smell. Re: How do you pick a Honeydew melon?

A good flat or tan patch on one side indicating it was left in the field long enough to ripen a little. Nice melony smell. Is "melony" a word? Re: How do you pick a Honeydew melon?

WY slap or thump, it's pretty much the same thing i think. Just more thumpy than slappy when done with a hand that isn't as delicate and girly as mine i guess. Who cares if people see you doing it, have you seen what they are doing in that grocery store? Man, some people let all their weirdness hang out when it comes to choosing and buying food. The squeezing, smelling, fondling that goes on... it's downright erotic! A little melon spanking sess' won't go amiss, I promise Re: How do you pick a Honeydew melon?

I normally don't eat so late, but tonight at 9 pm I just had to eat half of the Honeydew melon that Dave earlier today had said was "No good!!". I think I've had a better Honeydew, but I can't remember when. What am I going to say when I see Dave again? I may just change the subject, and start talking about the Weather. I know how it feels when someone tells you that you're wrong.....WY Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
