Date: January 16, 2009 03:41AM 5-a-day is a joke. I get 5 with my first meal: 2-3 servings of greens with 2-3 servings of fruit, either whole (salad+fruit) or in smoothie form. At least! I'm sure the same is true for everyone here. Re: fruits/vegetables slash breast cancer

Date: January 16, 2009 12:06PM Fresh, that is a good point. It's important not only to eat good things but also to avoid bad things.
However, there was another breast cancer study that actually assigned weighing factors as to how protective individual foods might be. Here they are from most to least: Leaf vegetables—raw 0.78 Mixed vegetables in salad 0.72 Tomatoes—raw 0.71 Carrots—raw 0.51 Olive oil 0.46 Leaf vegetables—cooked 0.3 Other fruiting vegetables 0.3 Fruit 0.23 Cheese 0.2 Yoghurt 0.18 Fish 0.17 Veal 0.16 Eggs 0.15 Carrots—cooked 0.14 Pulses 0.13 Seed oils 0.13 Poultry 0.12 Pork 0.11 Spirits 0.11 Wine 0.09 Processed meat 0.08 Offal 0.08 Potatoes 0.06 Milk 0.04 Bread 0.03 Beef 0.02 Margarine 0.02 Tomatoes—cooked 0 Pizza -0.02 Pasta -0.05 Rice -0.08 Cakes, butter -0.18 Source is first column in table 1 from this paper. Date: January 16, 2009 06:28PM Interesting to note what a difference cooking makes in the tomato.
Raw tomato is near the top of the chart with a rating of 0.71 and cooked tomato is near the bottom of the chart with a rating of 0 Re: fruits/vegetables slash breast cancer

Date: January 17, 2009 10:23PM I agree - 3-5 servings of vegetables a day seems so low!!!! Re: fruits/vegetables slash breast cancer

Date: January 17, 2009 10:57PM thanks, arugula,
there are obviously 2 camps. those that think foods have a 'protective' effect on health and those that think it's the negative effect of non foods that is the problem. in the study it's not clear to me whether they control for veggies being higher is the cause or veggies being higher means other non foods is the cause. i'm not even sure how to design a valid study. maybe group A only fruit group B fruits and veggies group C all veggies and juices or something along those lines Re: fruits/vegetables slash breast cancer

group A only fruit group B fruits and veggies group C all veggies and juices or something along those lines] This has been done with mice and squamous cell carcinoma. Clue: f+v group does better than f only. v only is pretty difficult, too bulky. Juice vs fruit wouldn't be as good as fruit. However, juiced vegetables would be better than no vegetables.
