Question for those of you who left out goitregenics.....

So, like, what the heaven did you eat - espeically green - when you left out kale and collard and spinach and parseley and, oh no, walnuts. Seriously what was left that was green or proteinacious? Thanks a lot!

Hi Piano Gal,
I'm careful about goitergenic veggies, but I don't avoid them, I have some meals with them and some meals without. I've learned that there's no one perfect food. We should aim for variety and balance.
Non-goitergenic green veggies that I eat include dandelion greens, clover sprouts, sunflower and pea greens, lettuce, endive, and escorol. A farmers' market nearby offers something called calaloo/ green leaf amaranth.

I too seem always to crave the "goitergenic" greens - there must be a reason my body wants these foods. Maybe they benefit some people, while adversely affecting others.

How do you know if you have a thyroid problem? Will I develop a thyroid problem if I keep eating mixed greens, spinach, kale, etc?

did a quick search on cooking goits, you can prob find more in depth info if you spend some more time than i!

"The effect of cooking on goitrogens

Although research studies are limited in this area, cooking does appear to help inactivate the goitrogenic compounds found in food. Both isoflavones (found in soy foods) and isothiocyanates (found in cruciferous vegetables) appear to be heat-sensitive, and cooking appears to lower the availability of these substances. In the case of isothiocyanates in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, as much as one third of this goitrogenic substance may be deactivated when broccoli is boiled in water."

other non goiterogenic greens
-arugula
-garlic greens (i LOOOOOVE THEM)
-onion greens
-radish tops/greens (their'e all right tasting, i use them)
-pepper cress greens - oh.soooo yummy!& spicy!
-mustard greens -(those r too spicy for me, can only nibble on a small piece)
-bock choy(sp?)

if U eat SMALL AMOUNTS of the goiterogenics, while eating mostly other greens in a mean, i'm sure U'll be fine, that's what i do & it works

Ok! This thread motivated me to seek out non-goitergenic greens and I think I've found the most perfect thing - curly endive.

It looks nothing like Belgian endive - curly endive looks like lettuce (I actually had to ask someone at Whole Foods to verify what it was), and it's not expensive like Belgian endive, either.

It's DELICIOUS. Has a substantial, satisfying taste, yet with the palatability of a lettuce - not bitter, not pungent, not weird in any way, it's just right.

We were probably shopping at the same time!

And I've got clover sprouts and alfalfa's growing in their little sprout houses. And parsley up the wazoo - I love parsley.

I'm rather hoping that this goitrogenic piece of the puzzle makes a big diff. It could. That would be so neat.

I still haven't figured out if chard is thyroid-evil. But it is the same family as spinach sooo.....

Let us know how it goes for you. I'll do the same.

-IF U LOOOVE IT, & IT'S FROM THE HEALTHY/RAW DEPARTMENT, THAN IT'S PROBABLY GOOD FOR U, & U'R SYSTEM IS CALLING FOR IT/NEEDS IT..
my thyroid suppose to be fine, though closer to the low level,
BUUUUUT,
after i'd eat more than a little goiterogenics in my meal,
I'LL BE FALLING ON MY NOSE/NEARLY ASLEEP!!!! ...
& THAT, to me, is a sign that THEY R NOT THE RIGHT FOOD FOR ME THESE DAYS....
maybe one day in the future,
but not now
