Do pasteurized almonds/nuts float?

When soaking nuts and seeds, we are supposed to throw away the ones that float because they are dead, correct? If so, would an easy way to test if a nut is alive to see whether or not it floats in water?

In my experience a nut (or berry) might float if it is spoiled or wormy, going off or rancid causing it to expand, or a worm might get in there hollowing it out making it lighter than water.
