How bad is occasional alochol consumption?

I rarely drink, but I will have about 3-4 shots every couple of months or so (About 24 servings a year). I'm sure abstaining is the best option but is there evidence to show that even light drinking has significant health risks?

Light alcohol consumption has shown to have some benefits such as reduced heart disease etc.

But its a very fine line, alcohol in my opinion is one of the worst drugs out there, ive seen many people around me crumble to nothing from alcohol abuse. But anyway as your not abusing it this shouldnt be the case.

My dad is Portuguese...
He drinks 2 glasses of wine with dinner and one with lunch...
Dark wine
I am convinced it is keeping him healthy... along with the garlic and olive oil...
He is 77... He has eaten LOADS of meat....
I am taking LOADS!!
HE has turned away from eating meat because of my "educating" him...
He eats Fish...
He is healthy, never has been on med's and is totally independent!
I am CONVINCED that wine, garlic and OO has kept him this way....

I don't think there is anything wrong with lean meats (fish and poultry) but alcohol is harder to defend.

I don't drink wine, only hard liquor (rum, vodka, etc) Aren't the heart benefits from the grapes that wine is made from?

Also, 3 or 4 shots taken together probably isn't the best pattern of consumption but I do it very rarely.

actually, there are heart benefits from the actual alcohol, as long as one isnt drinking to much, although they suggest that up to 3 oz of hard liquor a day is good for you... im not entirely sure, but I am entirely sure that around 24 shots a year (spread out like your doing) is most likely not harmful to you at all, whether its beneficial or not, we shall have to wait for more studies...

Like rawrn, I think that it's how you take it that counts and that eating a little with food as kind of an enzyme supplement seems to be beneficial if you are eating a bad cooked-food diet.
