Which Nut is best for a Raw Vegan Diet?
Posted by: Wheatgrass Yogi ()
Date: January 07, 2011 09:33AM

I've been living on Green Smoothies (2 a day) consisting of Fruit and Greens (mostly Kale). I would like to add a little Fat in the form of nuts. I've ordered some Brazil Nuts from NutsOnLine.com, but am not sure if that's a good choice. I was considering ordering some Walnuts.
My question is.....In your opinion, of all the nuts, which Nut is Best?.....WY

A variety of different nuts so you get a variety of different nutrients.

Brazil nuts are great choice as there a good source of selenium which is often hard to come by.

Brazil nuts, hempseeds, flaxseeds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and almonds I think are good choices. Ditto re: variety.

WY,

Also agree that variety is important. Go easy on the Brazil nuts; the jury's still out on whether excess selenium isn't oncogenic. A few Brazil nuts every few days is OK.

Thank you to those who responded.
I've decided to have Brazil nuts, Walnuts, Pecans, and Cashews in my Green Smoothies. I'll alternate them so only one kind of nut will be in each smoothie. That goes back to Natural Hygiene rules of only eating one concentrated Protein with each meal to avoid overeating. That may not stop me on the day I'm eating Cashews......WY

My feeling is that seeds are so small that the oil
turns rancid too quickly. However, if I do try them it would be
from NutsOnline.com. They have fresh stock, and quick delivery.....WY

Seeds such as chia have antioxidants which prevent them from becoming rancid.

WY -

I've been using pumpkin seeds here lately in my green smoothies. I enjoy the slight nutty flavor that they provide, and they supply an ample amount of protein.

Katz....I forgot all about Pumpkin Seeds. They do have a nice
flavor.
I had 5 Pecans in my evening smoothie, and couldn't taste them.
The Kale was too overpowering I guess.
One problem, as I see it, with small seeds, is the oil is difficult to
extract. Our teeth do a poor job because no one is willing to chew their
food properly. And blending to crack the seed requires a powerful Blender....
best to blend them by themselves, but that would be time consuming.....WY

My vote is for brazil nuts for the selenium and pumpkin seeds for the iron and zinc. These minerals are hard to get in quantity from fruit and veg. Brazil nuts are also usually wild harvest, so I feel as if I get more nutrients that way and promoting rain forest conservation, but that may be wishful thinking.

Chia doesnt need to be blended or ground to a powder to be absorbed.

Well, that would solve the problem, but it would be too
much trouble for me. I'd rather just forget about Seeds, and use
the oils found in the above mentioned Nuts. So easy just to toss a few
into the Blender.
I expect to receive my Cashews this week. Don't look at the price.....WY

Chia doesn't need to be ground, it is super absorbable once given a bit of a soak. Hemp blends up entirely well in a regular old blender if you are using the sort without hulls, they are quite soft. Flax I am not a particular fan of, it doesn't have a great balance of oils. I'm not sure that cashews are a great source of good oils either, they are not like other nuts.

One of the consideration in your choice of overt fats is the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid. A healthy range is a ratio of 4 or less. Here are the omega-6 to omega-3 ratios of various raw overt fat sources:

flax seed: 0.26
chia seed: 0.33
hempseed: 3
walnut: 4
macadamia: 6
olive: 13
avocado: 15
cashew: 125
sunflower seed: 311
brazil nut: 1144
almond: 2011

Thanks Prana. I had no idea about all of this. It looks like
the Walnut is okay by itself, but Brazil Nuts, Cashews, Sunflower Seeds,
and Almonds are best if mixed with Flax Seeds, or Chia Seeds to obtain
a proper ratio. Gotta do some research......WY

I kinda thought as much. I can use it in my fertilizer mix
when I grow Wheatgrass.
Some people still swear by Ann Wigmore's Rejuvelac, which is the fermented
soak water of wheat berries. She and Brian Clement had a big falling out
over this very issue. I do like what she called 'Energy Soup'...know today as the 'Green Smoothie'......WY

What are you talking about? A healthy ratio of 6 to 3 is 2:1 or less.

coco....could you give us a link explaining this? Adding
Fat to ones diet slows digestion, but everyone seems to think it's
necessary. I'm going to give it a try. I'm ordering some Flax Seeds
today.....WY

According to coco's chart, Almonds don't have any Omega-3's.
They must have something because so many are sold....mostly roasted.....WY

They have other nutritional benefits, especially if truly raw. The right balance of omegas is a total diet practice, offsetting the higher amount of omega 6's in almonds should be fairly easy (use some flax).

Walnuts also have a good balance of the two.
