Dr Michael Greger, a vegan MD who works for the Humane Society, just opened a new website www.nutritionfacts.org Greger is not a raw vegan and strongly supports a science based approach to vegan nutrition. Nonetheless, he provides some interesting insights you won't necessarily find elsewhere.

"...non B12 supplemented vegan diet rotted his spinal cord..."

Gah.

I don't quite understand why the opening picture was 3 bags of sea veggies though. He doesn't list them as a source of B12 (thankfully, or I wouldn't have been able to take anything else he said seriously) but he doesn't say anything else about them either. Odd that.

Anyhow, thanks for the links!

Coco,

I have Dr. Greger's DVDs for the last 4 years. The videos at this site are snippets from the DVDs. The sea vegetables were from the prior segment on hijiki being something we should avoid because of arsenic. It didn't pertain to the B-12 discussion.

I like Dr. Greger in general. He's very strong on science and ethics. That said, he's less enthusiastic on raw foods than I am. [nutritionfacts.org]

Also, he has a tendency toward gross humor (sometimes ad nauseum I just fast forward) and sometimes can report a result (e.g. eggs and cancer) which is based on a study result that is less than definitive (e.g. eggs and cancer, result was a case-control study which is less authoritative than cohort studies or randomized controlled trials). I would prefer a general discussion of weight of evidence (e.g. something like what Walter Willet does Chapter 2 of Eat Drink and Be Healthy) to help vegans assess the strength of evidence and support a weight of evidence approach to facilitate weight of evidence approach to making personal decisions for health. It wouldn't be that hard to do.
