kale burning my mouth

Hi,

I had a big bowl of fresh organic kale today on its own and had avocado and sprouts on the side.
After a few mouth fulls of kale my mouth stated to burn, and then i had to stop it was to bad.
I added some chopped up oranges to half of the kale and started to eat and it was ok.
I also mashed up some avocado and added that as a dressing to the other kale and that was ok to eat.

Why was the kale on its own burning so bad ?
I had to put a dressing on it (orange or avocado) to be able to eat it.

Paul.

I don't eat Kale no need for it.

Eat that which agrees with you.

It's pretty simple.

Yeah I'd have to agree with globalresult. If it doesn't agree with you...

I mean, is it like a bitter-beer-face burn, or like a tingly burn. A tingly burn could indicate an allergy.

it was like a pepper burn, and it got quite intense.

Im bloody anoyed to be honest, i wan't to be eating very high greens, because i don't get on well with sweet fruits and don't want to be eating real high fat.
Im eating kale again tonight, ill see how i get on.

Is it organic? If not, it could be the pesticides. My step son gets this same reaction if he eats non organic kale.

it is organic.

I actually washed my kale tonight in salt and water, and let it soak in there for an hour, then i washed it of in cold water.
I did have a nice avocado and tomato dressing over it.

Well i did not get any burn at all today, maybe the avocado dressing,
I do think the salt and water helped.

Do they noy spray anything on organic kale ?

unfortunately organic doesnt always mean nothings been done to it .. the laws seem very blurry at times

also something chemical coulda have been spilt onthe whole box of kale that yours came from ...stuff like this does happen :/

My guess is that it could have been high in oxalic acid. Were the leaves a little tougher, eg more mature than usual?

I'm very sensitive to oxalates and feel mild burning sometimes on eating beetroot, and always with Swiss Chard (can't eat it!).

'They say' spinach can be high in oxalates, but, again, it's more mature leaves - I never experience the problem as I eat young spinach only.

Basically, the burning is not a problem in 'you' - it's a problem with the food. Thank your clever body for being sufficiently vital to have noticed it.

And, sorry - forgot to say - it's believed that ingestion of foods high in oxalates can inhibit calcium absorption.

Actually the leaves were more tougher than usual.
I read that kale is low in oxalic acid, not like spinach.

I wonder what age the leaves the researchers measured were...

You could be right, i don't think so though smiling smiley

Kale in general has 0.02 oxalic acid per 100grams
spinach has 0.97

Potatoes have 0.05 lol even more than kale, and im sure squash has 0.03

I bought some kale today and tried it for the first time, and it also gave me a burning sensation in the nose quite like wasabi/horseradish sauce. Is this what you mean? I felt something was not right. I later checked the bendy wire thing that held the leaves together, and it said mustard greens. I read that mustard greens has a peppery kick, so it made more sense. So I believe I bought mustard greens mistaking it as kale. I checked the pictures, and they both look very similar! haha Hope this helps.
