It's a good question and I think they would have more defects than the case where the grandparents age at the parents conception was relatively younger.

Age effect of maternal grandfather has been demonstrated for some x-linked genetic diseases. Not yet for human lifespan but it would be easy to expect so.

The paternal X chromosome is more prone to mutations than maternal X because it's methylated in the male germ line.

These statements and more are from here, from the Gavrilovs:

Another key to living to a very advance age is to be born a woman. Something like 85 of the 100 oldest people in the world are women.

Yeah, and I think tall guys have the most health problems of all (especially back pain). I think it's worth it though (but I'm biased grinning smiley ).

I'm a tall guy. I have no back pain. I may be an oddball. I do a lot of yoga. And I think Iyengar yoga really, really helps with back and neck and shoulder issues.

Also, is 95 the new 75? [www.msnbc.msn.com]

Re Jeanne Calment...

From my website:

Of course every so often we hear of someone who has lived to 100 on a diet of full English breakfasts, whisky and fags. I reckon these people are kept alive as an IQ test for the rest of us – do we copy the one exception to the rule, or the millions that aren’t?

BTW, 'fags' in the UK means cigarettes.

people simply cannot live forever, or even for that long really. read up about telomeres
[www.telomere.net]
as dna replicates itself a bit of the end is left off and eventually it's all just too short to go on. we have built in obsolescence. gotta make the best of what we do get, brief as it is...

and good suggestions about physical activity as a way to improve quality of life. i agree with that wholeheartedly! i don't think i can complain about feeling my age if i don't give my body what it needs to function optimally.

quality above quantity, right? Right!

Sundancer,

<<It blows my mind that with all the information out there so many people have no idea of the relation between what we eat and our health.>>

And that includes the doctors! Family thinks I'm wierd for not going to doctors anymore (I would go if I had a broken limb or something of course).

The last specialist I saw a couple of years ago, I was raw for about a year at this point and was having bad shoulder pain, I mentioned I was eating a raw vegan diet. He brushed that aside and said it doesn't matter what you eat and suggested a really great new drug. A really nice man but maybe doctors are just too "specialized" these days.

Props! I don't not stretch or work out nearly as much as I should. Plus I got hit by a car ten years ago (not an excuse, should be all the more incentive for me to get active & limber).

Thx for the video. smiling smiley
