Serotonin and Dopamine
Posted by: michelemm ()

I am curious if people noticed a difference in "mood" when they stopped eating meat.

According to the BTD, grass fed beef is suppose to have ample amounts of serotonin and o's need this for dopamine regulation. Now, I am not saying this is true, but I do notice that I need something else to get the same effect I was having when eating meat on occasion.

Any thoughts?

You need tryptophan to create serotonin. Some of the best vegan sources of tryptophan are bananas, dried dates, baked potato, and nuts and seeds like sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, almond, walnut, etc. Legumes are also a tryptophan source. Things like sesame and pumpkin seed, bananas, watermelon, apples, and spirulina will aid the creation of dopamine.

I honestly can't confirm whether or not the vegan sources are as effective as the meat sources. You'd have to research variant levels of bio-availability or hope that someone who knows will chime in.

exercise (mainly cardio) will raise serotonin for days. That is why people who exercise 30 minutes a day feel better.

Gotta agree with that. Health is a lifestyle, not just a diet.

<<<You need tryptophan to create serotonin. …I honestly can't confirm whether or not the vegan sources are as effective as the meat sources.>>>

“So why should eating carbohydrates instead of protein boost serotonin?

The answer has to do with how tryptophan is handled by the body. Foods rich in protein actually send very little tryptophan to the brain. That’s because tryptophan competes with other amino acids, like phenylalanine, that are also found in protein foods--and often in larger numbers than tryptophan.” Dr. Gabriel Cousens, “Depression-Free for Life” p. 168

John, maybe that's why niacin (or niacinamide or noflush niacin pills) does such a good job (I am told) whereas just stuffing your gullet with protein doesn't necessarily do a lot for your mood!

Either that, or take tryptophan supplement on an empty stomach?
